outstanding...thank you

I now have a new desktop background!

Paradox, man...that's like a portfolio!  I usually don't like such long photo threads, but those were incredible.

I first saw those on a phone.  Glad I just saw them on a normal screen.

Thank you again for all the replies! I definitely appreciate every single one of them. As I mentioned, a sequel is in the works, and I promise not to add quite as many browser-busting images as I did in this one.

jmicha: I love that random connection! I remember taking that shot with a zoom lens near McMillan, trying not to look like a creepy prying pervert taking pictures of people I don’t know. It was cool to see so many people out in and around the UC campus that afternoon, considering it was nearly Mid-November ( albeit in the mid 70s, and of course plenty of people were running around in shorts)!

OTR:Hey, I definitely appreciate the Facebook links as well! I plan to eventually overcome my anti-social tendencies (ha ha) and eventually plan to make good use of them.

John S.: Thank you very much. I definitely made a conscious effort to leave out certain photogenic areas in my first thread in order to provide some visual variety for future ones…For example, there isn’t anything in this photo thread from the scenic communities of Clifton (although there are a few from Clifton Heights), Oakley, Mt. Lookout, and NOTHING from the west side at all. I’m definitely glad you were able to take in the architectural diversity that many-especially some that live in Greater Cincinnati overlook or take for granted.

NorthAndre: I’m on it! Surely but slowly… I’ve got Amsterdam photos to knock out first!

urbanforver: The photo in question was taken in Newport (Kentucky, of course).  Specifically on the corner of 10th & Patterson Sts. Photo number #31, looking west, down 10th St. was taken from the same intersection. Despite the fact that Newport doesn’t technically doesn’t even share a state border with Cincinnati, Newport probably has some of the best detached residential architecture in the metropolitan area. The best stuff IMHO is on the other side of Newport in the Mansion Hill neighborhood.

Sherman Cahal:PM me some directions, foo! ;)

spectreman9: Thank you! I take your comments as high praise, but I know deep down that I’m merely just holding up a mirror to what’s all around you.   It’s kind of fascinating to me how some cities especially those in cold weather climates take on a different character depending on the season. (I’m sure you’re definitely used to that, growing up in the Cleve ;) …I’ll just be happy when monsoon season finally ends…ugh!

molleraj: Ha! It’s actually the American Can Company building in the Northside neighborhood, a building dating to 1921, and registered as a NPS historic landmark. As a factory that has been more or less abandoned for over 30 years it’s in relatively good shape, and plans have been in the works for the past several years to convert the structure into a mixed-use project featuring housing and retail. Vice President Joe Biden even travelled to the location in July 2009, and used the building as a prop to tout the progress of the Recovery Act.

I feel the same way and I've heard many people say the same thing. This city has it's quirks, but at the end of the day, it's a hard city to leave. I think it's because of the fact that this is truly a unique city. I know if I do leave, there will certainly be things I will miss about this city. If I were a person viewing this thread who relocated to somehwere else from Cincinnati, I can almost assure it would have created some strong nostalgic feelings.

I totally agree. ColDayMan, among others can testify to my occasional bitching about the shortcomings of the city in my early twenties. Yet, slowly through maturing, reacquainting myself with the area, and appreciating things I took for granted after coming from other cities, I grew to appreciate the quirks of the city much more.

Obviously Cincinnati is far from perfect, and there were (and continue to be) some major missed opportunities throughout its history…but I’ve come to realize how fortunate the area is to have retained and expanded the culture, infrastructure, economic stability, and the amenities that the area currently enjoys. I still think I would eventually like to move out of Ohio, some day, if nothing more than for the life experience. But I don’t think I could ever make that move without getting homesick from time to time.

buildingcincinnati: Wow, I couldn’t even imagine looking at this thread on a phone! Even my laptop computer starts making grinding noises when I dared to click on my own ginormous thread….

Even though many people use broadband internet connections,  I still felt really nervous about hitting the post button after I numbered all the images, and realized how ridiculously large this thread would be. After putting in all the effort, I just decided to roll the dice and see how many people cursed me out for crashing their browsers.  Even though the thread seemed to work out pretty well.  I promise the sequel to this thread won’t be nearly as long!

^It's funny, I was talking to one of the people whom lives in that house (but isn't pictured) and they are aware of their photo being in this thread. Word travels fast apparently at UC :)

As for the photos, I keep reviewing this thread. You've managed to capture nearly everything I love about Cincinnati. Although not a native of the city and not planning on staying beyond graduate school, I will always support Cincy and have feelings for the city. It has been a good home for the past four years and will most certainly be for the next three years of my life. Thank you for this amazing thread.

Deserves a bump.  I was just looking for some skyline inspiration for a graphic I want to do and got to revisit this thread.  It felt like the first time I have seen Cincinnati and I have lived here for 25 years.

Fantastic photos!!  I really like your first photo and also the shot of the Tyler Davidson fountain.  You mentioned the fire at Smitty's.  There are pictures of the fire on the CFD History site: 3 Alarm fire 1427-1433 Vine 04-28-10.

Super sweet.

Is 107 Amberley Village?

^Definitely not.  Amberly is much more wooded, there wouldn't be a Walmart in the background, and the hint says "not Cincinnati"

Aaron, you make me never want to take photos again. In fact, a ladybug just walked across the keyboard.  Song now playing...'Dirty Boulevard' by Lou Reed, from "New York".  Now Squeeze.

Hey Aaron Davidson!!

Just a heads up-

http://cincinnatihomeloan.net/  is using your photo and I didn't notice a citation.  To bad SOPA doesn't exist or you could shut them down.... (joking...) but seriously you should ask them to mention you. Is that image under creative Commons licensing?

I CANNOT get enough of this thread.  Whenever I'm frustrated with life in Cincinnati I come back to this thread.

Best thread on UO

Such a tease that it's called "Chapter One", as though there is a chapter two of similar quality waiting to be posted...

You'll be waiting another 10 years for chapter two...

Who is Paradox? I want to use one of his photos.

^Looks like his name is Aaron Davidson, but he hasn't logged on in a while.  There may be some contact info on his flickr site, but I didn't see any during a cursory look:

Sounds like some of the other members know him personally, so hopefully someone has an email address or something.

Also, I missed this thread the first time around.  Great pics, as everyone else as said.  I was surprised by how many places I didn't recognize.  I have never seen the Charlie Harper mural in #58, for instance.

I had to find this thread. That is a pretty epic photo collection and hope someday we see Chapter Two!

Somehow missed this thread in 2011 so I’m glad it popped in my thread today.  Gorgeous photos.  Love the graphic quality when you flatten the perspective.

I didn't see this either when it was posted. It's worth keeping toward the top - still one of the best compilations of any city.
