November 15, 201113 yr With a whole lot of assistance from the unions (more significant concessions), Cleveland's Department of Public Safety will realize some major cost savings when the Divisions of Fire and EMS are merged. Best of all, the chopping will come from the top in addition to the bottom becauee the executive ranks will be combined. Although this might mean less workers overall in the new Division, staffing levels will in all likelihood be maintained (perhaps even increased to stave off O/T costs).... so, when you have a heart attack, an EMT-P will arrive first on the scene with the EMT-B firefighters..... and when your house is on fire, the staffing levels for each apparatus will comply with national and generally accepted guidelines for safe and efficient emergency response. This will also help solve the problem of exhausted paramedics who were being forced to work incredibly long shifts the past few years, leading to union grievances and other issues.
