Infinite Variety: Three Centuries of Red and White Quilts, Park Avenue Armory, New York By Simon Schama Published: March 29 2011 http://www.ft.com/cms/s/2/1942e71a-5a25-11e0-86d3-00144feab49a.html#axzz1IZlSABgS http://www.folkartmuseum.org/infinitevariety bonus -- of course the seventh regiment armory (park avenue armory) is a sight in and of itself: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seventh_Regiment_Armory http://www.armoryonpark.org/index.php/about_us/history/ It is the only armory in the United States to be built and furnished with private funds.[3] It originally served as the headquarters and administrative building for the 7th New York Militia Regiment, known as the Silk Stocking Regiment due to the disproportionate number of its members who were part of the city's social elite. The Armory’s 55,000 square foot drill hall, reminiscent of the original Grand Central Depot and the great train sheds of Europe, remains one of the largest unobstructed spaces of its kind in New York. too dark in the main hall for my own iphone to handle the whole view the armory has plenty of rooms full of decayed, clubby charisma on the right is a portrait of washington painted during his lifetime *** even if just to look around, a park ave armory event in manhattan is definitely worth checking out ***
April 5, 201114 yr Neat! The building is a gem, and the quilt display would have been something to see. A close friend and contemporary of mine has been quilting since she learned it from her mother as a youngster, and her mother was creating quilt designs on a Mac when she was in her nineties.
