Judging by their Facebook page, Troubadour’s new coffee shop is La Taza Rica.

Thanks @Morningtheft2 ... well I'm definitely embarrassed...especially with the the Cudell Improvement Inc post right above my own post.

I suppose all I can add to the overall knowledge is that it's the same owners as Troubadour.

No, that was good info.  I hadn’t seen them linked before. Troubadour is good, makes me even more excited for la taza rica

I was at Troubadour Coffee Roasters today on Lorain Rd in Fairview Park and it mentioned they’re opening a second location in Cleveland city on Clifton Blvd.  I didn’t catch the exact location, but it sounded like a block or so east of Lucky’s.

They are going to be in the location of the Chinese restaurant that recently closed down, just to the east of Tick Tock.

Dave's Markets Buys Cleveland and Columbus Lucky's Market Locations

While Lucky's Markets filed for bankruptcy and the majority of its stores earlier this year, the Cleveland location remained open.

This week, it got a new owner.

Dave's Markets bought that store and the Columbus-area Lucky's Market at auction for a total of $1.25 million.

Not sure if I like that.

Why not? At first glance it seems like good news - store's remain open plus they now have local ownership. What is it that concerns you?

^Agreed. Dave's granddaughter is a good friend of mine, would love to see them have a bigger west side footprint.

I think the customer service is much better at Lucky's and the stores are cleaner.

^ I hear you, but IME the new Dave’s on Chester is excellent in both regards.

I shop at both Lucky's and Ohio City Dave's weekly and they are pretty similar in terms of cleanliness. Dave's has really stepped up their game as of late. Their customer service has also been better than Lucky's recently.

The last time I was at Lucky's (maybe 8 days ago) they had one register open with a line of about 20 people deep. Not great.

I think this is good news. The Saltzmans are a great family and as mentioned above, their Midtown store is great and they tend to cater the stores to the market they serve.  I don't think think things will change much except there might be more mainstream brands available now.

I get the sense that the Lucky's location was fairly successful, so the Saltzman's won't try to fix what isn't broken.   Hopefully they will take what was working, and improve on it.

I never went in on weekends or evenings, but did they ever get big crowds at that "bar"?   During the day it was wasted space....

They've actually had a DJ spinning the tunes there with a few customers at the bar on weekends.

Didn’t know they had a bar there. That’s a cool idea. I’ll have to check it out when we’re all allowed back outside (I know we can go to grocery stores but I’m assuming the bar is shut down for now)

Their purchase of the Phantasy, for an undisclosed price, is scheduled to close in early July. The centerpiece of Studio West, the 54,000-square-foot complex will remain an eclectic collection of entertainment venues — six in all, interconnected, after renovations.

A narrow alley off Hird Avenue will become the main entrance to the property. Four retail bays, tailored to LGBTQ-owned or -friendly businesses including a coworking space, will line the alley. They'll have secondary entrances in restored storefronts along Detroit Avenue.

Just behind the Phantasy, a long-vacant industrial complex at 1384 Hird Ave. is slated to become a sports bar and athletic complex called the Fieldhouse at Studio West. Public records show that Figgie and Budish paid $480,000 for the interconnected buildings in February. Their plans include a rooftop patio, a mural-lined courtyard and indoor playing courts designed with the growing Stonewall Sports community in mind.

The third piece of the project is a nearby retail and apartment building at 11600 Detroit Ave. in Cleveland. Budish and Figgie acquired the property in May, according to public records that don't show a price. The building, fully occupied by tenants including My Friends Restaurant, will provide short-term cash for other pieces of the project, Figgie said.

Large apartment building planned in Lakewood

By Ken Prendergast / November 7, 2021

One of the surprise applicants to a new ‘megaprojects’ tax credit program was the Studio West 117 development, a project now under way at the east end of Lakewood. Until the tax credit applications were submitted Oct. 29 to the Ohio Department of Development, public information about the project showed it was limited to renovations of historic buildings.

Now, a significant new-construction apartment building for seniors is being added to the $75 million planned revitalization those historic structures into a hub of entrepreneurship, arts, culture, health and human services for Cleveland’s LGBTQ+ community.

Studio West 117 campus plan grows
By Ken Prendergast / March 16, 2022

What started out with two significant real estate purchases on either side of West 117th Street in Cleveland and Lakewood by a development partnership has since expanded to seven properties. And what was originally a $75 million vision for renovating the old Phantasy Theater complex called Studio West 117 has grown even further, developing into a multi-faceted LGBTQ+ supportive neighborhood.

Cleveland, Lakewood rehabs corner historic credits

By Ken Prendergast / June 22, 2022

The largest historic tax credit that any one project could win was $5 million and there were four of those max awards statewide. One of those was the Homestead Theatre Block, part of the Studio West 117 campus on both the Lakewood and Cleveland sides of West 117th Street. But the theater complex itself, 11794-11816 Detroit Ave., is on the Lakewood side.

Known most recently as the Phantasy Theater entertainment venue, the Homestead was built in 1917 as a silent movie house. It continued to operate as a movie theater until 1979. Shortly after, it was redeveloped into a live music club for new-wave, alternative and industrial musicians. The theater’s next act will be as a hub of entrepreneurship, arts, culture, health and human services for Greater Cleveland’s LGBTQ+ community.

In Cleveland, They’re Cooking Up a Gay Neighborhood From Scratch  - Restaurants, kitchen classes and gardening are key parts of an effort to create a L.G.B.T.Q. district that can help lift the area’s economy.

Erik Piepenburg - New York Times - Oct. 28, 2022

"The Fieldhouse is just the first phase of a much larger effort by private developers and local governments to build a complex of businesses and services that cater to L.G.B.T.Q. people — and attract them to visit or settle here. In effect, they aim to provide the hub for a brand-new gay neighborhood, at a time when many traditional gay enclaves — from Chelsea in Manhattan to the Castro in San Francisco — have lost much of that identity to gentrification and assimilation. Unlike those intentionally segregated urban neighborhoods, which blossomed in the years after the 1969 Stonewall uprising, this one is based on what its developers think locals need and will support in this solidly working-class city. That means amenities that are affordable and appeal to families, with an emphasis on food."

What makes Cleveland a working-class city? Is it the 11 percent of the workforce that's in manufacturing??

My wife, son and I ate at the Fieldhouse earlier this week. The food was very good but the waitress was a helicopter -- probably because there were so few people there. Alas, we did not stay for the 11 p.m. drag show as it was a school night.....

I sometimes can't help but laugh when the tone of these national articles imply or even outright declare that Cleveland and NE Ohio is some sort of cultural backwater!

I originally thought a sports bar was part of the equation, but maybe one of the restaurants can take on that role on game days.

Those writers - or media folk - are just showing they don’t understand Cleveland  - it’s actually, by a number of metrics, a very cultural city.  I don’t need to list the reasons

Anyway - before we go way off topic…

^ i looked into him -- and it turns out the writer is actually a gay cleveland native -- so he should know better with those casual backhanded remarks.

unfortunately, purposefully or not i find young move-ins like erik here to be thee worst on their hometowns -- and he fits the stereotype.

it will pass with him as with everyone as they mature, but the media damage they do irks me to no end. it will take time and he won't get it now because thinks he is doing a solid because he wrote about cleveland at all.

anyway sorry, its a long running peeve of mine ... !

Seeds & Sprouts XXVII – downtown Apts groundbreaking due, Factory to be Artist studios, Urgent Care tosses Pizza Hut

Urgent Care Center to toss Pizza Hut

Cleveland’s City Planning Commission last week approved the demolition of a Pizza Hut restaurant that has been at the southeast corner of West 117th Street and Detroit Avenue since 1987. Before that it was a Shell gas station which in 1970 replaced the ornate, Spanish-style Granada Theater that closed the year before. The next chapter for that busy street corner will likely be an Urgent Care Center if the commission approves a final design for it in the coming weeks.

Might have to pay a visit for old-times sake.   Thanks KJP

I know that an urgent care is a better use of that location than a crappy chain pizza restaurant, but the loss of this particular Pizza Hut hits me personally. My grandparents lived on W. 112th between Detroit and Clifton when I was growing up. They would walk me up to that Pizza Hut for my own little personal pan pizza when I would visit. That building holds some core memories of my childhood. And I'm not gonna lie, I like the old hut building style, not the soulless boxes you find in newer locations.

But alas, time and progress marches on.

West 117th’s fast-food makeover
By Ken Prendergast / July 3, 2023

The sites of three fast-food restaurants in a short stretch of the Cleveland side of West 117th Street are about to get a new look. But only one of them isn’t going to be slinging its quick, cheap chow anymore. The other two will continue to offer fast food and to make it easy, if not easier to grab the grub and go without having to get out of your car. And all three sites will continue the practice of building single-use structures along a busy thoroughfare whose car-dependent land-use patterns have more in common with outer suburbia than being in the midst of one of Greater Cleveland’s most densely populated areas.

The title got my hopes up that we were going to see a short north type of method when it came to fast food restaurants (Built below apartments apart of a dense, walkable development). Instead it’s the same suburban style restaurants.

It will be replaced by a Bank of America branch.
