May 17, 20187 yr I was very impressed on my first visit today. I’m not big on organic foods but I’m going to change that now.
May 17, 20187 yr What are the prices like? Wasn't really paying attention to prices, but I did notice the roasted whole chicken was $5. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
May 17, 20187 yr We had one of the $5 roasted chickens - I think that is the Wednesday special price.
May 21, 20187 yr The level of activity has ramped up noticeably in my neighborhood lately in recent days..... Clifton Diner will soon add to the goings-on around here. Work is progressing on their new location at Clifton/Hird including this outdoor patio facing Clifton.... They're coming from as far away as Maine! The quality, high-density housing stock in the neighborhood helps.... People are dying to move into this area! May 21, 20187 yr I did my weekly shopping at Lucky's today. I like the store, although it was much too busy today to really get a good feel for the place. It seems like a more mainstream Nature's Bin (in a good way.)
May 21, 20187 yr Does anyone know if anything is planned for the last remaining retail spot in the new building next to Lucky's? When the project first started I had heard that a sushi place would go there, but there's been no sign of anything going in that space.

When the project first started I had heard that a sushi place would go there, but there's been no sign of anything going in that space. Tenants have been looking at the space -- I was with my wife at the nail salon when representatives of Sprint PCS were looking at the retail spaces and talking to the managers of each. But that was a couple of months ago and I've not seen any evidence of anything coming in. If not a sushi place would be a great fit there.
May 22, 20187 yr Does Lucky's offer sushi in their prepared foods section? If not a sushi place would be a great fit there. Didn't look. Not a sushi fan. But you can order a pint of beer, glass of wine, or a coffee/latte/cappuccino from the bar near the Clifton entrance and drink it (spill it) while you shop. Something else fast-quasi healthy would be great like a Pita Pit.
May 22, 20187 yr Lucky's was packed last night around 7pm. Despite the crowd and it being 1 week old, I thought the operation was really smooth, and as long as they keep the prices reasonable, that'll be my new default grocery store. While I selfishly would love a Cava (mediterranean fast-casual that's rapidly expanding from the D.C. area), I'm not sure if the parking lot can sustain Lucky's, Chipotle and another restaurant around rush hour / dinner time.

May 22, 20187 yr That may have killed the sushi shop owner's biz plan. Something else fast-quasi healthy would be great like a Pita Pit. Fusian was the first to commit to the Shoppes on Clifton, but it has been experiencing some financial problems in the past year. It closed two restaurants in Columbus and another in Cincinnati. It had nothing to do with this site or market. Lucky's was packed last night around 7pm. I've noticed people parking in the CVS across West 117th or over by Starbucks across Clifton. Traffic is pretty bad during rush hours, especially with Lake Road getting resurfaced and there's a short section of water line getting replaced on West 117th next to the Chipotle. In fact, Chipotle was closed due to no water on Sunday afternoon. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

May 22, 20187 yr I've noticed an overall huge upswing in pedestrian traffic on the corner. Someone is going to get hurt the way the cars fly through there. I'm more worried about the crosswalks where there are no signals. But yes, I've nearly been hit as a pedestrian a few times at West 117th/Clifton. At least there's no turn on red, but there does need to be a left turn arrow on West 117th northbound. I avoid that turn at rush hour as it can take several light cycles to get through there. May 31, 20187 yr Pouring concrete for the outdoor dining patio for the new Clifton Diner at Clifton and Hird in Lakewood. I spoke to the owner a week ago who said he hopes to open around July 1st. This former National City/PNC bank on Clifton at West 115th in Cleveland is rumored to be a new medical office but a for-lease sign still stands in front of it. However the bank drive-through infrastructure was being removed this morning. August 12, 20186 yr Update from today. Note the last picture, that Verizon will be taking the last available retail space at Clifton Shoppes. They will compete with Sprint which now occupies the former PNC bank at Clifton/W115th.... August 12, 20186 yr Was talking to Mike Sapell, owner of Sapell's grocery store on West 117th today about the neighborhood. A few highlights.... > His business dipped a little bit after Lucky's opened but said it's coming back. > Said he gets offers every couple of days for his 2-acre property (a large parcel for Lakewood with a big empty parking lot out back) but says he has to pay his kids' college tuition bills so he's not selling anytime soon. > When he learned Clifton Diner (aka Dinerbar on Clifton) is opening Wednesday, he said he expects Huntington Bank to move out as they are already parking constrained. > He said Huntington won't move to the Cleveland side of West 117th because Cleveland police response times to that area are too slow. He said the frequency of bank robberies and the slow response to them are why PNC and Citizens Bank closed their branches there. The banks wanted to stay because of the neighborhood's population density. > If the property owners on the Cleveland side of Clifton want more security, they could do what Kamm's Corners or Ohio City did and vote in a property assessment to pay an off-duty cop to walk/bike the beat. Sapell had mix reactions to that. "That's why I'm in Lakewood. The police come in 30 seconds, not 30 minutes." > I wouldn't be surprised to see the house just south of the parking lot of the commercial building at Clifton/Hird get bought and demolished for more parking. Huntington doesn't want to move. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
August 12, 20186 yr ^ thanks for the insights. Though I would think that if he needed tuition money for the kids he would want to sell.
August 12, 20186 yr ^ thanks for the insights. Though I would think that if he needed tuition money for the kids he would want to sell. Depends on the offer. He said one of the offers was from Goodwill. When I told him Steve Barry Buick got roughly $3 million, he said that's probably what he should have gotten. August 13, 20186 yr So the official opening is Friday but the soft opening is Wednesday. Hopefully it won't be ruined by another flood of dirtbikes from the east-side cesspool.... BTW, I didn't know that the neighborhood has a twitter account. What they need is to hire some extra security... https://twitter.com/WestEdgeCLE Celebrate the Grand Opening of The Dinerbar On Clifton this Friday 6pm-9pm during the August G2H2... August 15, 20186 yr DinerBar (aka Clifton Diner) is ready to open at 11801 Clifton August 15 at 7:00am. Now in Lakewood instead of just outside of Lakewood many will remember it as a favorite for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It now features more seating inside and out, a nice patio and a full service bar. http://lakewoodobserver.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=24885 "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
August 16, 20186 yr My family and I went to the soft opening of The Dinerbar On Clifton this evening for dinner. It was very busy for a soft opening of non-invitees. We were the first people to sit outside and, when the inside filled up, more people joined us outside until there was only one open table left. The food was good but the service was understandably slow, with a few mistakes here and there. The menu is much more diverse than when it was the Clifton Diner pre-2016. But they kept a few momentos from the old place, including its old sign inside and a poster of the diner's facade, where the Landmark Restaurant is now (they continue to be busy despite the growing competition). After dinner I went to the store and took a few photos of the Edge..... August 19, 20186 yr Update...the neighborhood missed Clifton Diner...nka The Dinerbar On Clifton. Every table was full except one when we arrived at 9 a.m. today. There was a line out the door when we left. People were parking all the way down Hird Avenue and in the back of Sapell's lot then walking over. September 7, 20186 yr Progress on the Brickhaus townhouses at West 117th and Lake in Cleveland. It includes exterior materials and windows. Too bad they couldn't get that last west-facing window installed before the remnants of tropical storm Gordon hits on Sunday.... September 7, 20186 yr Is the Edge Development partially in cleveland and partially in lakewood? Or is it all in Cleveland?
September 8, 20186 yr All in Cleveland. Clarification...there is no single Edge development. There's many of them. I thought you were asking only about the Brickman development. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
September 8, 20186 yr All in Cleveland. Then why is this thread say Cleveland/Lakewood. This is misleading. I never followed this thread because i thought it was in Lakewood. I just happened to view this thread for the first time and I realized it was in Cleveland.
September 8, 20186 yr ^I have always viewed this thread as a discussion of various developments on and near the Cleveland-Lakewood border, especially things happenong around West 117th but not limited to that area. If you look at the thread people discuss different developments on both sides of the border, especially KJP because he lives in the neighborhood. And it is not limited to one particular development like the Brickman townhouse project.
October 2, 20186 yr Interesting that the sale condition of the Pizza Hut property is that the buyer redevelop the half-acre site. OK, but the price tag? Really?? http://www.loopnet.com/Listing/1407-W-117th-St-Lakewood-OH/13711088/ FYI previously this was a Shell gas station from 1970 to the mid-1980s before Pizza Hut was built. But the site is best remembered as the location for the Spanish-style, 1927-built Loew's Granada Theatre. Like many old vaudeville/movie theaters of the day, it was huge, seating 2,165 people. It also had an "atmospheric" ceiling, looking like a starry sky at dusk. The theater was closed and demolished in 1969. October 26, 20186 yr Well, they do have Fox News on the TVs inside the restaurant. ? That's probably not a good idea considering this is a very liberal neighborhood. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
October 26, 20186 yr Just now, KJP said: Well, they do have Fox News on the TVs inside the restaurant. ? That's probably not a good idea considering this is a very liberal neighborhood. Personally, I don't think restaurant patrons should get hung up on that sort of thing, but I'm always baffled when businesses choose to air a politically divisive channel/show. Why give your customers any reason to not like you?
October 26, 20186 yr Personally, I can pay attention to the food and not the TV, but some of my friends/family can't and won't go back. It is important to know your market/surroundings. December 30, 20195 yr I was at Troubadour Coffee Roasters today on Lorain Rd in Fairview Park and it mentioned they’re opening a second location in Cleveland city on Clifton Blvd. I didn’t catch the exact location, but it sounded like a block or so east of Lucky’s. I asked when they were opening, they said February... as long as the city of Cleveland paperwork/permits and the many, many steps don't get delayed much anymore. Going to be a cool edition to the neighborhood -- the spot in Fairview Park offers some bottled craft beer along with exotic coffees. Edited December 30, 20195 yr by MuRrAy HiLL
