Apparently still doing well after the London flight start in June.  https://www.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/news/2023/10/04/delta-international-flight-paris-cvg.html

Delta has been competitive in pricing to Europe now. I have looked at flight cost for work either connecting at LHR or CDG. Delta has been cheaper than BA on majority of the flights I have priced.

September passenger numbers for CVG just released:

September

2022: 664,329

2023: 708,215

Variance: +6.61%

YTD

2022: 5,594,959

2023: 6,470,598

Variance: +15.65%

September, like August tends to be relatively quiet (outside of Labor Day weekend), so the absolute numbers aren't surprising. We also lost three Breeze flights after Labor Day (SNA, RIC, & PVD), but picked up DAL's 1x daily to RDU. With that being said, we haven't seen 700k passengers through the airport in September since 2019. We're still trending toward 8.7-8.9 millions passengers by the end of the year.

Cargo tonnage in 2023 sits at 1,547,376 tons through September. After a couple slower summer months, YTD cargo tonnage is up ~8.5% YTD

I drove around the interior of the airport grounds recently.  The new Amazon Air sort facility has a very large (6-8 decks!) parking garage for its employees.  It + DHL are a pair of big-time operations that have to be seen to be believed.

It's thoroughly impressive. I was flying back into CVG last week, and we lined up for a landing on 36C which gives a great view of the facilities on final approach (assuming you're on the right side of the plane). You can really appreciate the scale of both complexes.

That road that goes between DHL and Amazon Air has a weirdly intense energy, sort of like you're at LaGuardia or LAX.  I think the reason why those really big airports are so stressful to drive around is because there is so much cargo and ancillary activity that is jammed right up against ordinary passenger activity.  Mercifully, at CVG there is separation.

How did Breeze Airlines fare at CVG in 2023?

By Chris Wetterich – Staff reporter and columnist, Cincinnati Business Courier

Oct 24, 2023

Updated Oct 24, 2023 10:04am EDT

Leisure carrier Breeze Airways expanded aggressively at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport in its first year here, offering five nonstop destinations, with two of them continuing past the peak travel season.

Travel to two of the markets thrived, with passengers filling at least eight out of every 10 seats, while two others saw fewer than 7 out of every 10 seats filled.

In 2023, Breeze flew to San Francisco; Charleston, S.C.; Providence, R.I.; Orange County, Calif.; and Richmond, Va. The Richmond flight proceeded onto Jacksonville, Fla., so CVG passengers had that option as well.

Overall, 73% of Breeze’s 58,291 seats out of CVG were filled in 2023 through July, the latest month data is available from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. Domestic U.S. airlines saw 84% of their seats filled in 2022, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. From 2014 to 2019, that number ranged between 84% and 85%.

Shockingly, flights to SFO and Southern California fared well. Two markets that have been critically underserved at CVG since the pandemic.

American cuts a whopping 21 Austin routes in major network shake-up

Over the weekend, the airline filed a major schedule change for service at the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS), and the details aren't pretty. American is slashing a whopping 21 routes from Austin, Cirum schedules show. This effectively reverses much of the carrier's growth in the Texas capital that was announced during the pandemic.

TLDR: CVG will lose it's AAL flight to AUS effective January 7, 2024. This was admittedly not a mainline flight as it was an Envoy E175, but still a bummer nonetheless. This schedule change has more to do with Austin than CVG. Virgin Atlantic has also announced it will be cutting the AUS-LHR flight.

Is it issues with Austin, or AA's expansion strategy? The article seemed to lean more toward AA's issues.

It's Austin. A lot of the tech sector jobs left after the pandemic, and with the cost of living skyrocketing, a number of people have followed.

I believe it's now the most expensive city in TX for overall cost of living.

This is more of a contract negotiation issue with AA and mainline pilots. Mainline pilots want more service into AUS and AA is using its regional airlines for the majority of these flights/routes. It is a violation of the ongoing contract. AA has to get rid of all these regional flights now. I will say DL brought the route back and its doing well, and the AA route was doing well too but its being cut because of pilot negotiations more than Austin not being a hot travel spot or the airport is too small.

Frisch's Big Boy restaurant now open at CVG airport

Frisch’s Big Boy has opened at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, the latest in a series of local food institutions to open at CVG.

Frisch’s conducted a soft opening in recent days and was feted by CVG officials at the official opening Nov. 16. It is located in Concourse A, from which most of CVG’s non-Delta Air Lines flights depart.

The new store will open as early as 4:30 a.m. to serve travelers during the airport’s early morning busy period. Its breakfast menu will include pancakes, eggs, biscuit sandwiches and breakfast burritos. The lunch and dinner menus include the classic Big Boy, a fish sandwich, turkey melt, vegetable soup, hot fudge cake and three pies — cherry, apple and pumpkin.

Frontier Airlines adds crew base at CVG

In a significant move, Frontier Airlines, the first low-cost carrier to establish regular service at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, setting off a decade of growth, said it will open a pilot and flight attendant crew base at the airport.

The crew base will employ about 80 pilots and 160 flight attendants within its first year of operation. Frontier estimates when those jobs are added to airport and maintenance positions, it will generate nearly $27 million in local wages each year, with further growth expected.

Only one other airline presently bases pilots at CVG – Allegiant Air, another ultra-low cost carrier. Delta Air Lines shuttered its pilot crew base in 2020 during the height of the pandemic.

The newest information today sounds like more routes and cities to come for CVG. I just wonder how many AC will be based in CVG now with their new business model copying their sister company Wizz Air.

Quietly unannounced Delta has reopened an FA base at CVG again. The current amount of service offerings could not be met by flying in crew from other bases. So they have reestablished a base and are hiring/transferring FAs to CVG. Maybe we can get the pilot base back too.

Frontier Airlines CEO Barry Biffle on CVG: 'We would like to grow more'

By Chris Wetterich – Staff reporter and columnist, Cincinnati Business Courier

Nov 22, 2023

Frontier Airlines plans to add more nonstop destinations to and from Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, which is why it needs more staff based in the region, CEO Barry Biffle told the Business Courier.

Frontier, the first low-cost carrier to establish regular service at CVG a decade ago, said Nov. 21 it will open a pilot and flight attendant crew base at the airport, employing about 80 pilots and 160 flight attendants within its first year of operation.

“This is a big deal for us. We’ve been investing in Cincinnati for 10 years now. We’ve continued to grow every year, except for Covid,” he said. "We would like to grow more and add destinations. In order to do that effectively, we need to have a base there. This enables more and more nonstops. By having the crews there, we can fly more places more quickly.”

CVG DL station manager confirmed the other day that the FA base is back. It was a shortsighted move because DL was planning to strip more routes and cities from CVG. They stopped due to demand and struggles in other cities. The issue currently is having to fly in a lot of extra FAs at the moment to handle the early morning flights and the CDG route.

As Frontier Airlines plans CVG growth, here are its most popular destinations

By Chris Wetterich – Staff reporter and columnist, Cincinnati Business Courier

Frontier Airlines announced before Thanksgiving that it's opening a crew base at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, a precursor to expanded service in the region.

While Frontier cut back flights in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, it has roared back at CVG, filling 81% of the seats on its planes coming and going from the airport, according to federal airline data analyzed by the Business Courier. In 2022, the figure for all domestic flights nationwide was 84%, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. The federal Bureau of Transportation Statistics data cited here runs from January through August 2023.

Based on data through October, Frontier is the third-largest carrier at the airport based on passengers who board aircraft at CVG behind Delta and American Airlines.

American Airlines And United Airlines Want Chicago O'Hare Expansion To Slow Down - Simple Flying

According to a report by the Chicago Sun-Times, the two airlines want Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD) to significantly slow, scale back, or even halt its expensive expansion plans. The main concern is the soaring costs of the project, with the latest phase now $1.5 billion over budget. While the initial project cost was estimated at around $8.7 billion, current estimates now have it at over $12 billion.

More here

ORD rather unique in that it is one of only a handful of airports in the US which is a designated hub for more than one legacy carrier. AAL has just under 25% market share at ORD with United at over 38% market share.

This is a highly unlikely scenario, but AAL could look to draw down some capacity in Chicago, and CVG sits as an underutilized airport nearby. I have no evidence to back this up, but this is an interesting development to watch.

Delta adds 11 new Austin flights just weeks after American slashed its schedule there

The carrier announced on Friday a significant expansion in Austin, which sums to a whopping 20% increase in capacity, making this Delta's largest-ever schedule in the Texas capital.

Delta is boosting service on existing routes from Austin to Cincinnati and Raleigh-Durham with an additional daily flight that will also commence on April 22. American just dropped service to Cincinnati, and now Delta is adding another daily flight in the market. In fact, Delta will effectively have a monopoly on this route since Allegiant Air — the sole competitor in this market — only operates flights on a twice-weekly basis.

More @ The Points Guy

With DAL adding another flight to AUS, it will be interesting to see if AAL responds with a mainline flight. As mentioned earlier, there were some shenanigans going on with the AAL regional network which led to some downsizing.

I would assume this second flight is also on a regional affiliate (the current 1x daily is on a CRJ9) but I haven't seen anything to confirm that.

Delta launches new international flight from CVG to Cancun

Delta Airlines will launch a new flight to Cancun, Mexico, on Dec. 16, its first new international flight since the airline relaunched service to Paris in 2022.

Delta is matching the weekly, seasonal frequency to Cancun that its rival, American Airlines, established. American launched its Cancun flight on Dec. 9.

The Delta flight will run from Dec. 16 through April 6.

The flight times have changed since the new route was announced. The outbound flight leaves at 6:22 a.m. and arrives in Cancun at 9:45 a.m. The return flight leaves Cancun at 10:45 a.m. and arrives in Cincinnati at 2:08 p.m.

This honestly makes me nervous for the airport's future. She leaves massive shoes to be filled. I hope she is a part of the search committee to find someone similar to herself to keep things moving in positive direction.

Apparently she's going to be asked to provide feedback, but won't be part of the primary search group.

This should be a pretty attractive opportunity considering the trajectory of CVG over the last decade. The combination of massive cargo growth, Amazon's hub, and passenger traffic returning so quickly to pre-pandemic numbers (without the airport being a hub) is very impressive.

To come within 5% of those numbers is thoroughly impressive. For CVG to rebound like this as a non-hub airport is fantastic news for the future. There is no reason to believe the airport won't eclipse 2019 traffic considering the routes which have already been and will soon be added.

All of this data is 2019 vs. 2022 since that's the easiest for me to get to:

IND

2019: 9,537,377

2022: 8,693,024

Var: -8.85%

CMH

2019: 8,637,108

2022: 7,455,031

Var -13.69%

CLE

2019: 10,040,817

2022: 8,695,234

Var: -13.40%

I don't know about IND or CLE, but the Columbus Regional Airport Authority has already released 2023 figures. CMH finished with 8,375,281 and LCK added another 297,151 for a total of 8,672,440.

Thanks! I honestly forgot about including LCK in the Columbus totals.

I was going to add BNA, since I can get their 2023 numbers, but I didn't have 2019 at my fingertips.

No prob! It’s great to see CVG and CMH/LCK getting back to pre-Covid levels (or close to it) so quickly. Let’s hope the trend continues!

Number of CVG airport passengers rose again in 2023

The number of passengers flying out of Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport increased by nearly 15% in 2023, signaling a continued recovery from the Covid pandemic.

Roughly 8.7 million passengers came through the airport last year compared with 7.6 million in 2022. That's compared to the 8 million to 9 million CVG saw before the pandemic, including the 9.1 million passengers it logged in 2019.

Much of the reduction can be attributed to the loss of business travel, which is between 75% and 85% of 2019 levels, a level fairly consistent over the past two years.

Breeze will not fly from CVG to two of its destinations from last year – for now

One of Breeze Airways best-performing flights from Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport last year will not return at this point but could be reinstituted in the future.

Breeze flew from CVG to Orange County, Calif., in 2023, the first time CVG had a direct flight to that market in a decade. The flight performed well, with 83% of its seats to and from CVG being full, according to federal airline data compiled by the Business Courier.

But this summer, Breeze instead will fly nonstop to San Diego, another market CVG has not had nonstop service to in years. The last time it was served was 2019.
