CVG adds 6th airline in May

By James Pilcher • [email protected] • January 27, 2010

HEBRON - The Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport Wednesday announced the first new carrier to its lineup since 2004, with Air Canada saying it was launching two flights daily in May to its main hub in Toronto.

http://news.cincinnati.com/article/20100127/BIZ01/1280326/CVG+adds+6th+airline+in+May

I'm in Toronto now and my Air Canada flight from CVG had 7 passengers.  Yes a 50 seat aircraft, 7 total passengers.  I'm  not sure if the LF's are always this low or not, hopefully not or this service will be gone by years end.

Tru but the important variable is the yield that A/C earns on those 7 pax.  Plus this could have just been an off day.  I've flown from JFK with as little as 15 people to LAX.

Just because these two airline are merging does not mean CVG with see service from either or Southwest after the merger.  Also, it does mean that CVG will not see any new service from southwest anytime soon, as mergers take a good amount of time.

What a wildly speculative article

The Enquirer staff, pulling things out of their @55es once again.

Edit: Actually, I guess it's that analyst. I wonder what the circumstances were under which he said this.

"It very well could be the time that Southwest decides to take on Cincinnati directly by putting planes in there, or they could boost their presence in Dayton and keep drawing away people to the north," said airline analyst Vaughn Cordle of Washington-based AirlineForecasts LLC.

Here's an interesting comment.

"Here is an idea for Southwest... add in Cincinnati at the expense of LEX, LOU, DAY, CMH, and IND. We are centrally located to all of those cities and are the largest market at 2m+ compared to each of them, in some cases double the market size or more. As a bonus, we have plenty of runway capacity and terminal space."

While not the main focus of the article, here is an interesting take from P&G's Global Facilities and Real Estate Organization director:

Lydia Jacobs-Horton, director of Procter & Gamble Co.’s Global Facilities and Real Estate Organization, said downtown improvements, including a streetcar system, casino and upgraded parks on the Cincinnati Riverfront and Over-the-Rhine, will have a direct bearing on P&G’s ability to attract talent.

But she also cited two problems related to the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport as impediments to regional growth. One is the loss of Delta flights at the CVG hub.

“It’s a huge disappointment,” she said.

The other is the lack of a solid connection between the airport and downtown.

“Transportation from the airport to the city,” she said, “that is a first moment of truth impression and often times that fails.”

via http://cincinnati.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/blog/2010/10/dan_blog.html

Not much we can do about Delta, but let's get a good connection going between the airport and the city!

A more impressive approach to the city than 275 and 75 is to drive down the steep hill to Kentucky 8 and either cross the ferry or take Kentucky 8 into town.  It's obviously a lot different than strip malls.

^ The key word there is "drive". I think the P&G exec was speaking more about convenience (particularly for business travelers), rather than aesthetics. (Supposing you were at least partially responding to the article I posted.)

You have an interesting idea, though, for picking up visitors from the airport!

http://news.cincinnati.com/article/20101014/BIZ01/310140078/Ky-airports-seek-action-from-state

FRANKFORT – Kentucky should take aggressive steps to lure airlines and boost passenger services or risk further erosion of a vital economic driver, the state’s largest airports told key lawmakers Thursday.

The airport officials urged the state to create a revolving loan fund for airports and potentially airlines, adapt tax incentive laws to better suit aviation, and allow airports to create separate companies to provide outsourced services such as baggage handling and ticket taking.

“At the end of the day, we are basically asking the legislature to give us the latitude to diversify our business because we’ve got to start making money from anything and everything that is not associated directly with the airlines,” said John Mok, chief executive officer for the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport.

CVG cuts could send firms away

Companies like Chiquita need a hub with good travel options

By Laura Baverman • [email protected] • November 22, 2010

A downsized airport may be all it takes for Chiquita Brands International to pull up its deep Cincinnati roots for a city with more air travel options to its growing produce business. The international marketer of bananas, salad and other fresh produce has a lease in its namesake building on Fifth Street through August 2011.

And it has already begun a search that includes sites outside of the region.

Hmm Is that speculation? Or this reporter actually talked to all the CEO's? You would thing the Governor of Ohio would know something about the situation since most of the companies are located in Ohio. I would never believe a reporter would have bette access to a CEO of a company than a reporter would. be. If Ohio was smart they would revamp Lunken and get SW in there or build a new airport between Cincinnati and Dayton. Getting 14 billion for a new airport is another issue in it's self.

Chiquita is the worst example to use. It was only brought to Cincy by Uncle Carl. They are still bitter about the Enquirer story (that the Enq hasn't recovered from). Part of the reason they changed their name and moved from Boston was to escape their own history as United Fruit - the corporation behind eponymous Banana Republics of Central America. The CEO has barely disguised contempt for Cincinnati and has for most of the decade.

B concourse will see a new Subway restaurant and also The Great American Bagel Company by years end. The bagel place is replacing wetzels pretzles and subway will be new. Dunkin Donuts is also set to come back to the airport early 2011. Food news is news...right?!?

oh boy...

Maybe Delta will have second thoughts about all their downsizing now.

Company to develop fuel plaza at Cincinnati airport

Business Courier

Date: Wednesday, January 5, 2011, 1:34pm EST.

http://www.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/news/2011/01/05/company-to-develop-fuel-plaza-at.html

According to a press release, the plaza will include a main building of 9,800 square feet and a fueling canopy with more than 40 parking spaces. The plaza will offer fuel, car wash, light auto repair, a restaurant and a convenience store.

The location of this will be where the old thrifty/dollar rental car place was. It has been in the works for a while. Hope you guys like MC D's!!

  • 2 weeks later...

It kind of makes sense because the airport already has a lot of heavy infrastructure related to fuel. There is even a fuel depot on the Ohio River connected to the airport by a pipeline.

If they can't sell fuel to the airlines, why not try to sell it to truckers?

It also has a lot of automobile traffic, and this is sorely needed at CVG.

^Why is automobile traffic sorely needed at CVG?

This DHL thing at CVG is a head scratcher.  I've just been a casual observer but didn't DHL spend like $65MM expanding operations there for domestic only to relocate to Wilmington when they bought ABX?  Now they come back and invest more.  Seems like they should've just chose CVG to begin.

It's good they took a collective sh!t on Wilmington.

Essentially, they are pretending like the whole let's compete w/ UPS and Fedex thing never happened (which is where Wilmington comes in) and things are basically where they were in the late 90s, when they did all their major import/export through CVG.

They are also in the planning stage of building a truck facility at CVG as well.  I believe the total land area is 49 acres including the ramp apron expansion, all to the immediate south of the current DHL buildings.

Also, the old DHL facility on the north side of the airport is about 50% demolished.  They've been working on demolition since the week of Dec. 20th.

Don't know if anyone saw it, but last week (I think?) Delta announced they are cutting 25% of flights in Memphis.  Memphis is about to take the same haircut we took at CVG.

  • 3 weeks later...

the word on the street is that USA3000, the only LCC that operates at CVG, has begun to wind down operations in preparation to cease doing business. This airline serves Chicago as well as a handful of warm-weather leisure vacation destinations from Cincinnati and Cleveland using A320 aircraft.

While USA3000 is not a huge airline, their impact of being the only LCC at CVG is pretty big and I think we will see some fare increases to leisure destinations when they close up shop. We'll also see alot of their pax return to IND/DAY/CMH/SDF.

Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport to get face-lift

Written by

Alexander Coolidge

8:12 PM, Jun. 20, 2011|

The Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky

International Airport will get a face-lift by

late next spring after the Kenton County

Airport Board approved a plan Monday to

move all carriers into Terminal 3. The cost

could be up to $31 million, airport officials

said.

The changes mean the airport will close its

aging Terminal 2 and reopen Concourse A,

which was shuttered last year amid

cutbacks by carrier Delta Air Lines.

A rendering and more information from the CVG website at:

http://www.cvgairport.com/terminals/A_Plan.html

I'm so happy this renovation and consolidation is finally confirmed. Terminal 2 is, quite frankly, an outdated relic. Housing all airlines under the Terminal 3 roof will allow for a much easier and convenient flow of passengers, as well as a much nicer facility. The renovation will also increase available space for new entrant carriers.

From - http://nky.cincinnati.com/article/AB/20110620/BIZ01/306200095/

Most important, the team wants to give the terminal and the concourse a “sense of place” so passengers know they’re in the Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky region.

“This is our hometown airport and it needs to feel like it – the design will be influenced by our regional heritage,” he said.

My hope is that the former Union Terminal murals in T1 are relocated into the renovated Concourse A, they would certainly look nice there.

Where's coa$t and the rest of the circus on this one?

  • 2 months later...

Today Delta informed its workers at CVG that they are going to sell their hangar located on the northern part of the ramp, close to A Concourse.  This is the usual bad news CVG has heard from Delta for the past 6 years.  It won't be too much longer until Delta is under 100 flights a day.

It won't be long until there are more flights out of Great Falls MT than their are from CVG. :(

Rumour Time. By January 2012, Southwest Airlines will be starting service out of CVG. This has been making the rounds on the West side of town.

?????  That's only happening if the airport board lowers the landing fees.  i don't see how they're going to be able to do it without a bailout.

I heard the same thing from the ValuePark driver last time I flew.

Maybe that's part of their bigger plan.  They realize Delta will continue to cut flights and are renovating Concourse A in anticipation of bringing in more carriers.

Sounds like a good effort at reorganization and moving on to the future. I find it encouraging.

I saw something earlier (can't find the link, alas) about CVG looking into the possibility of tearing down Terminals 1 and 2, and consolidating all operations into Terminal 3 (which would presumably become merely "the Terminal"). Probably a good idea, as the old terminals are fairly antiquated, and consolidation would allow passengers to transfer flights without having to leave and re-enter security.

Delta adding flights at CVG

http://news.cincinnati.com/article/20111129/BIZ01/311290020/Delta-adding-flights-CVG?odyssey=tab|topnews|text|FRONTPAGE

"Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines will add flights and air service at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport in early 2012 in response to requests from the local business community, the airport announced today."

Kind of a weak announcement though...nothing out of the ordinary, these additions will just make connections easier for flights that were once direct from CVG...

Also, hilarious timing on this announcement from Delta considering its the same day Chiquita will leave Cincy for LACK of flights!

New airport road project will diversify revenue

Hundreds of acres of virgin land in northern Boone County soon will be opened up to new development, and officials envision an aviation-related industrial development that could provide a major economic boon to the region.

A new road is under construction just south of the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport that will provide access to more than 400 acres of land when it is completed next fall.

The airport owns about half of that land and, in a major policy shift, plans to develop the site itself. The other half is owned by local attorney Paul Vesper, who also plans to develop the land.

No plans are finalized for the site, but many officials envision a large-scale light industrial park related to the aviation industry. The proximity to CVG and its DHL Express international air cargo hub could help attract companies such as aerospace manufacturers and retail distribution facilities.

Cont

The shift to those destinations may have to do with Nielsen, correct? Everyone's talking about how weird it is that that they added destinations, after Chiquita announced its move, but it all mentioned that it was at the request of several companies.

The airport's previous long-term plan called for a runway in the location of the new development area.  Maybe the airport realized that they won't have a need for any additional runways in the foreseeable future.  Or they see light industrial as something that can easily be torn down should they ever have the need to expand.

Airport may add more runways

By Bob Driehaus Post staff reporter

The new north-south runway at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport won't open until December, but airport officials are already making long-term plans for a fifth and maybe even a sixth runway that are sure to raise the hackles of residents who live beneath their flight paths.

Two options are under consideration: an east-west alignment just south of the airport's only east-west runway or a north-south runway east of the airport's three north-south runways.  Landrum & Brown, a Cincinnati airport consulting firm, is conducting tests in conjunction with the airport to determine which alignment would move planes in and out of the airport most quickly.

Barbara Schempf, the airport's manager for governmental and technical affairs, said findings from the study might show one option to be much better than the other or for them to have similar benefits and costs.  Should neither be established as the clear favorite, both could be placed in the airport's master plan, she said. They must be in the plan before federal regulators will consider them for approval.
