I personally feel leaving at 1 am sounds great. Hopefully crash out and wake up in Iceland ready to go. I went out of my way to do this on my last flight to Europe and it worked great.

People who travel to Europe from the USA often tell me this.

Agreed.  I flew from Philadelphia to Zurich at midnight and was refreshed when I landed.  Thank GOD for those neck pillow things.

The website wasn't working for me last night so I wasn't able to check the overall transit times to Europe via a transfer in Iceland.  Theoretically it should be the same or shorter than heading in the opposite direction from Cincinnati to Chicago or Atlanta.  But practically it probably makes no or little difference.

We obviously don't have much of a choice for flying to Europe from Cincinnati, but if there is one expense in a trip that should be prioritized, in my opinion it is flights that get you to and from Europe at times that make sense, to the exact place you want to visit, and with a maximum of one flight change.  With international trips, crazy departure and arrival times exaggerate the effects of jet lag and basically ruin the first day of the trip and your first day back.

Travel time to Iceland is about 6.5 hours. We've gone up there twice. Travel from Iceland to Glasgow was another 2.5 or so. I'm guessing that most other EU destinations would be ~4.... so you're looking at about 10 hours.

Whew, bad rendering hope Airport didnt pay alot for both of them. Great to see they are making upgrades. Hopefully they will switch out the Carpet in the tunnels for it being newer it definitely didnt hold up as well. Concourse B needs attention to the bathroom areas like Concourse A received. I wish the airport would get better water bottle filling stations.

Delta dropped San Jose back in 2010. Delta still offers daily service to San Francisco. So this would be new market service to CVG.

I fly to San Jose for work often and haven't seen a direct option from Delta. Unfortunately my current project will probably be over before this Frontier flight starts up.

Nice route. Direct to Cali out of CVG has been under served.

Frontier simply moved their SFO service to SJC.  Not really a big deal and not a service expansion.  A new destination for CVG, yes.

^Does that mean that Frontier used to fly CVG->SFO and now flies CVG->SJC?  Or is this actually an additional option from CVG to the west coast?

CVG continues record-breaking growth

The Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, one of the fastest-growing airports in the nation, is continuing to set records in passenger and cargo volume.

The airport set an all-time record for cargo tonnage handled in one month in August with 92,988 tons. That marked an increase of 39 percent year over year.

Originating passenger volume has grown 58 percent, while airfares have decreased more than 30 percent at the airport over the past three years.

North American Airports Effectively Navigating Construction, Capacity Challenges, J.D. Power Finds

http://www.jdpower.com/press-releases/jd-power-2017-north-america-airport-satisfaction-study

Overall passenger satisfaction with North American airports has reached an all-time high, as airports of every size have found creative ways to address the challenges of constant construction projects and increased passenger capacity demand. That’s the finding of the J.D. Power 2017 North America Airport Satisfaction Study,SM released today.

“Capacity has become a huge challenge for North American airports, with many reporting 100% of available parking spots being filled and large airports, such as Orlando International, setting passenger volume records each month for more than three years straight,” said Michael Taylor, Travel Practice Lead at J.D. Power. “Despite these difficulties, airports are responding with new technology and old-fashioned personal skills to win over harried travelers. These range from smartphone apps that tell travelers where to find a parking spot to therapy dogs—and in one case, a therapy pig—mingling with travelers to relieve stress and improve the overall airport experience.”

Following are some of the key findings of the study:

Overall satisfaction reaches all-time high: Overall customer satisfaction scores have reached an all-time high of 749 (on a 1,000-point scale), which is up 18 points from last year’s all-time high. Improvement is driven primarily by a 25-point increase in satisfaction with security check, thanks largely to fewer TSA staffing issues this year, and gains in two factors: check-in/baggage check (+19 points) and food, beverage, and retail (+15 points). Self-service bag-check kiosks and other bag-tagging technologies have played a significant role in improving the baggage check process.

Tech investment helps overcome logistical hurdles: With nearly every airport in the country dealing with challenges of high passenger capacity and ongoing construction projects to address increased demand, technology is helping to directly address these issues. For example, Sacramento International Airport has developed a smartphone app that tells travelers where they can find a parking spot, and virtually every airport in the country has invested heavily in improving phone-charging stations and internet access in their terminals.

Dogs, horses and pigs! Oh, my!: Many airports have also found success in improving customer satisfaction through creative use of high-touch traveler outreach initiatives. Phoenix Sky Harbor, for example, deploys a team of therapy dogs for passengers to pet while they wait to board; San Francisco International features a pet therapy pig that roams the terminal looking for pets and selfies; and Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Airport has more than 30 stress-relieving ponies on staff with which travelers can interact.

Big city construction projects remain obstacle to satisfaction: Despite the most creative efforts to address traveler frustration, major city airports that are in the thick of massive construction efforts—notably Newark Liberty, LaGuardia, Los Angeles International and Chicago O’Hare—are still fighting the headwinds of traveler disruption and access challenges that are handicapping their overall satisfaction scores.

“The trifecta of a steadily improving economy, record passenger volume and billion-dollar renovation projects unfolding in airports across the country has created a challenging environment for customer satisfaction,” Taylor added. “The fact that many airports are overcoming those challenges is incredibly instructive for the industry as it remodels and improves airport infrastructure.”

How’s Southwest doing at CVG?

Southwest Airlines has been impressed with its flights' performance at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport so far, according to CVG CEO Candace McGraw, but a decision on whether the airline will add flights and where is probably months away.

The low-cost carrier has operated flights from CVG to Chicago’s Midway Airport and Baltimore-Washington International Airport since June. Both destinations are doing well, McGraw said, although Southwest hopes to see improvement from its first flight of the day to Chicago.

Conversation I had with someone at Southwest offices in Dallas was the number one location from CVG beyond was BOS. Here is hoping that Southwest will add a route to Boston from Cincinnati and give Delta some competition on the route.

^Does that mean that Frontier used to fly CVG->SFO and now flies CVG->SJC?  Or is this actually an additional option from CVG to the west coast?

Correct - Frontier currently flies to SFO and is moving the service to SJC.  Every move Frontier makes get super hyped.  The same thing happened with MIA, they simply stopped flying to FLL and started MIA, not an expansion and definitely not a big deal.

Since both United and Delta will continue SFO, SJC is a new destination on the CVG route map.

Well, not literally because you can’t carry liquids onto an airplane, but the Franklinton craft brewery’s taproom at John Glenn Columbus International Airport will open Monday so weary travelers can enjoy a craft pint on their way in or out of the airport’s concourse B. There will be six-packs for sale to inbound passengers.

I wonder if CVG has attempted to reach out to any local breweries and have them open a tap room in CVG. It would be great to showcase our local brewing scene to people passing through CVG.

^Sam Adams has a bar/restaurant in CVG, I believe

^Nice! I think the food at the Lager House is great, so this will hopefully be a huge improvement to the current offerings at CVG.

Frontier won’t fly to this West Coast city from CVG after all

Frontier Airlines will not start direct service to Seattle from Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport in 2018 as announced in July.

The ultra-low cost airline had announced this past summer that it would fly to Seattle three times per week starting in the spring. But when Frontier made its final determination for its 2018 schedule over the summer, a CVG-to-Seattle flight was left on the tarmac.

“They did not have enough equipment time to fund both Seattle and San Jose in 2018,” said Bobby Spann, the airport’s vice president for external affairs. “They will look at the Seattle opportunity again in 2019.”

^Meh....its frontier. No great loss.

Do we think it would be better for CVG to add nonstop destinations or to add carriers to already served destinations?

The obvious answer is both but I'm just curious on the forum's opinion.

When the airport gets new carriers with additional routes, prices drop. Two cities I travel to for work. Chicago use to be 400+ round trip, Tampa 500+ round trip. Now I can fly Delta to Tampa for 300 round trip and Chicago on any legacy carrier for under 170-180 round trip. Do I like frontier? No. but they have helped make the big boys lower their prices. I wouldn't mind either another carrier adding a route to the Northwest or getting Alaska in here. Indy, Pittsburgh, and Nashville have all gained service from Alaska this year alone.

Has anyone heard anything recently about a CVG+JetBlue marriage?

Southwest appears to be pretty successful with flights to their hubs so JetBlue should be able to support flights to FLL and BOS. I would imagine a nonstop to FLL would be popular on its own and not just as a connection.

Detroit, Cleveland, and Pittsburgh are all served by JetBlue but none of those are really "local."

If people don't realize that SW is using this as the ultimate test on expanding service at CVG, they must be blind. A seasonal service for one month out west, every plane load percentage will be looked at to determine if west coast service is viable and how many days a week they would want to fly out of Cincinnati. Its like the best way to see if it would be successful or not without throwing a ton of time or money at an experiment.

The west side suffers from being far away from growing employment centers in the north and northeast of our region. There is another growing employment cluster forming now around the airport. We need a bridge (w KY side tunnel) from US50 to CVG and I-275 in KY to connect the West Side with these jobs.
