Glad to see one of the new places is named after OTR.  The city really doesn't do a good enough job of advertising OTR as a tourist attraction.

CVG soars past another record

soapbox-600x400-mastodon.jpg?s=f

Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport has broken another all-time passenger record.

The airport served a total of 1.2 million local passengers in May, June, and July, which surpassed its previous record in those months of 1 million set in 2000.

“New destinations, additional frequencies and lower airfares are all contributing to the overall growth we’re seeing,” CVG CEO Candace McGraw said in a statement. “We thank the community for embracing the positive change and choosing to fly with CVG. Our mission is to make travel through CVG an unforgettably positive experience for all of our passengers.”

Impressive considering how much traffic used to go out of the "C" terminal which does not exist anymore.

Now if only they could update the food offerings, nothing like eating at the last Max & Erma's left...

The Moerlein taproom they're opening in concourse A looks really cool.  If their food is half as good as the lager house that will be a good spot to go.  Concourse A has really seen improvements in it's food options the last couple of years with passengers increasing.  Concourse B could certainly use some newer and better options though.

CVG wants more people to book cheap flights to Chicago

Flights to Chicago from Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport are as cheap as they have been in years, and airport officials want to persuade Cincinnatians, particularly business travelers, to use them more.

The airport plans to embark on a marketing campaign to highlight the fares, which on average were $103 each way in the first quarter of 2018 compared with $242 each way in the first quarter of 2016.

Between Southwest, Delta, American and United airlines, CVG has 23 flights per day to the Windy City on peak days.

CVG rides wave of airport customer satisfaction across North America

img4.jpg

Overall passenger satisfaction with North American airports is at a record high – and travelers at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport agree, according to a new report.

The J.D. Power 2018 North America Airport Satisfaction Study, released today, showed across-the-board improvements in five of six categories – check-in; food, beverage and retail; accessibility; terminal facilities, and baggage claim. That helped drive overall passenger satisfaction to an all-time high of 761 (on a 1,000-point scale), which was 12 points higher than last year’s previous record of 749.

Will Wow Air continue to fly from CVG?

Wow Airlines, the Iceland-based carrier that began service at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport this year, will pause its service after its last flight to Iceland on Oct. 27, a Wow spokeswoman said.

The hiatus is seasonal because of operational, logistic and commercial reasons, Wow spokeswoman Maria Marget Johannsdottir said.

“Wow Air is, however, happy with the Cincinnati route last summer and is currently looking at returning in 2019,” she said. “Dates have not been confirmed.”

Delta cutting direct flights to three cities from CVG

Can't read the article but I'm curious as to why Delta has been cutting nonstops. First Nashville, now three more? This is after they have increased capacity to a number of destinations over the past 6 months.

Airline ends CVG service

tfwin*750xx1280-720-0-67.jpg

Wow Air, the low-cost international carrier providing direct service to Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport from Iceland, will cease operations from CVG after its final flight later this month, citing profitability concerns.

Cincinnati isn’t alone. Wow won’t return to St. Louis or Cleveland either.

“Unfortunately the routes did not achieve the profit targets set,” the airline, which launched service in Cincinnati just five months ago, said in a statement.

That was a big asset for me, and was hoping it would continue as I will be living in Europe next year.

That is a bit of a bummer. Given that CVG still has a direct flight to Paris, I imagine most of the European travel opted for that over the Wow service. I'd imagine the majority of the CVG-Paris fliers are doing it for business, so people are less likely to look for discount service, and don't want to deal with the added time of stopping and connecting in Iceland. It would be really great if we could get service back to London, too, but I don't know what the odds are of that happening.

I would have to assume that WOW pulled out due largely to their business model. I have no earthly idea how these budget airlines turn a profit.

New data: CVG second-cheapest airport to fly from in Midwest

The average fares at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport dropped again in the second quarter of 2018, making it the second-cheapest airport to fly from in the Midwest behind Chicago’s Midway Airport.

Among the top 100 airports in the country by passenger count, CVG was the 21st-cheapest, with an average fare of $313.75. In the same period in 2017, CVG had a $342 average fare.

If CVG could get Norwegian to start service, that would be a major win. Norwegian has a strong low cost, long haul business model whereas WOW Air is basically a purple transatlantic Ryanair.

Most people probably won't take that Paris direct flight unless they need to go to Paris and are going on their company's dime. It's usually a lot more expensive.

It's often a lot cheaper to connect in DC, NYC, Boston, or Philly and then get a flight to Europe.

Yeah but a direct flight to an overseas destination is definitely worth the difference in price.  I were to fly to Paris from Cincinnati, I'd take the direct over a connection even if it costs $500 more.  There's just too much crap that happens out there.

Now imagine you're travelling with a wife and two kids. Suddenly that's $2000 extra to get direct when you could fly to NYC first. That could pay for your lodging over the whole trip and plenty of meals.

Personally, I would take the connection to save even a couple hundred dollars flying solo. But obviously everyone is different.

A former coworker of mine booked a show for his band in Iceland via WOW and a few people from Cincinnati went.  He met a girl from Australia there and now they are dating.  So that cheap flight to Iceland is now costing him a ton since they're flying back and forth from Australia.

As for "real" overseas trips, I don't understand the point of going for less than a week, and the cost of a flight reduces as a percentage of the overall trip cost the longer said trip gets.  Who wants to deal with airport monkey business while jet lagged at the end of a 2-week overseas trip and have to show up beat to work the next morning?

I always got the impression that WOW was funded by the Icelandic government as a pro-tourism effort. When you book a flight on WOW, they strongly encourage you to add a layover in Iceland.

Agree. I wouldn't be surprised if they replace the three cities they dropped this fall with three new cities in the spring. They already got everyone in Cincinnati who was willing to spend a week in Iceland to do so, now it's on to Des Moines or some place where the Iceland tourist well isn't dried up.

The tourism angle mentioned by @taestell and @Ram23 makes sense for WOW. As for other budget airlines, I recently went to San Diego for a wedding flying Frontier for $200 r/t. The seats are smaller and don't recline, and the aisles are smaller too, so they pack in more seats. And both flights (direct) were completely full. I think the business model relies on packing a ton of people on every plane, lured by the low fares. Then of course they nickel and dime for everything, from carry-on bags to coffee and pretzels. I was wondering about the flight crew's experience, unions, etc., but I don't have any answers about that stuff.

Regarding San Diego, I have to shout out @surfohio for being instrumental in crafting a fantastic itinerary! ??‍♂️

Which markets are seeing big fare cuts from CVG?

dsc8738*750xx1600-900-0-83.jpg

Nearly 80 percent of Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport’s top 100 destinations saw their average fares decline between the second quarter of 2017 and the same period in 2018, according to data released by the airport.

That coincides with the start of service by Southwest Airlines in June 2017.

Just came back from business in New Orleans and flew Southwest. Both Monday morning flights last week to MDW were completely full and the return flight from BWI to CVG was almost full yesterday afternoon.

I know that Southwest has been planning on expanding the route network from CVG even more than to DEN and PHX, but these load factors have to be encouraging.

Yeah now if the Airport would get a move on and fix the awful parking situation. It really shows a lack of planning and leadership when the Long Term parking is constantly full, but they still don't have the other parking lot ready yet at the existing employee parking lot. Passengers are coming in droves to CVG again but the airport seems to not be ready to receive them...

Landed late Sunday night at CVG from a trip and had to wait for the Uber in the parking lot behind the baggage claim (Gate 10/TANK bus stop). The Uber driver said they moved the pick-up location to there a month ago. It's a bit odd, but it works better because the ride-share vehicles no longer have to wait in the Cell Phone Lot.

Is that the same location where they have a pet relieving area directly next to the bus shelter?

I hope that Icelandic picks up the route, but that is probably wishful thinking.

I don't know if we'll see Icelandair proper service at CVG for a while. ICE already flies 5x/week from Cleveland and they won't take delivery of their next round of 737 MAX 8's until 2019-2020

Would be nicer to see more direct service to the continent, IMO, rather than via Iceland. BA would also be better than ICE. Lufthansa or KLM would be awesome.

Agreed. Obviously ICE's business fully hub and spoke as everything connects through Iceland.

BA's parent company now owns a stake in Norwegian which could be good for CVG. Obviously service to LHR would be ideal but until the third runway gets built, there won't be enough landing slots and BA wouldn't be interested in the relatively thin demand from CVG. Norwegian could help fill that gap to mainland Europe as they have a robust point to point model.

CVG scraps plans for economy parking lot

By Chris Wetterich  – Staff reporter and columnist, Cincinnati Business Courier

A year after saying it would open a new, cheaper economy parking lot as it raised parking rates across the board, Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport has scuttled those plans.

Instead, the CVG employee lot on Donaldson Road, where the economy lot was going to be located, will serve as an overflow lot for the ValuPark lot.

more

That seems like a much better strategy. The cheaper economy lot would have just stolen many of ValuPark's customers. Better for CVG to keep customers paying the ValuPark rate and build out the other lot as an overflow rather than a cheaper option.

That article's list of airport transit options in Cincinnati's peer cities is just brutal.

When will CVG experience a true renovation? Many first time visitors to cincinnati are coming out of CVG. CVG is our "gateway" in some respects, as most airports are.

The old 80's style carpet..the dead stores inside the terminals...Its kind of depressing and looks like an outdated abandoned mall in many respects.

I don't feel that the airport looks outdated, but the life of some of the stores and restaurants leaves a lot to be desired. CVG is a really pleasant experience in my opinion. Just a lack of food/retail.

Its funny as the offerings are better I think in Terminal A for a pre flight drink these days.

You must not travel often. I travel alot for work, and I can tell you that our airport is still a damn good looking airport compared to many. Carpet has been replaced everywhere. But you will not see carpet gone completely, its not economical for any airport. A and B both have been upgrades, yes B restrooms could use some upgrades but there not terrible. All the vendors in B are slowly going to be upgrading with the new contracts, right now some have temporary signage, but hell they reopened the CNBC store across from Max and Erma's,  Ida's Seat is reopening, and there are six new retailers coming to B.

If you are comparing CVG to Major Hubs or Major regional airports, you cant, you should compare our airport to other airports with 5-10 million passengers a year which is what i compare CVG to in regards to looks and offerings.

CVG is a nice-feeling midsize airport. Having the train makes it feel bigger than it is, although I think they could emphasize its usefulness better (if you're just following signs, you end up walking for what could have been a train ride). The retail seems to be hanging on ok, from what I can tell. Doesn't feel abandoned.

Agreed. CVG is a pretty great medium sized airport. Way more open and comfortable than most.

Kentucky bourbon lands at CVG

Local wine and liquor retailer Cork ‘N Bottle is now open at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport in November.

The 200-square-foot store, which opened Nov. 17 at Concourse A, offers bourbon and whiskey-focused spirits and a tasting station. The airport is marketing the location as the trailhead for the Kentucky Bourbon Trail.

New lounge coming to CVG

A new lounge for paying passengers will open in Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport’s Concourse B, which will complement the one that already exists in Concourse A.

CVG’s board approved an eight-year agreement with Manchester Airport Group to open an Escape Lounge. The airport is guaranteed up to 13 percent of gross sales or a minimum of $36,000 per year.

Very doubtful.  I don't see Delta giving up that area which has been used as a pilots lounge.  Most likely will see them use old retail space that has been empty, similar to what was done in A concourse for The Club.

Icelandair scraps plan to buy struggling rival WOW Air

Well so much for that. It remains to be seen if Icelandair still has its eye on CVG due to the high load factors seen by WOW during its time here.

See what could be interesting is the new backer for Wow is Indigo Partners that has major stakes in Frontier (USA), Volaris(Mexico, Caribbean) Wizz (Europe). If they were to invest and create codesharing and partnering with each other. Wow could come to cities where Frontier has a bigger presence like Cincinnati to shuttle folks to Iceland and Europe beyond that then could connect on Wizz. Frontier passengers wanting transatlantic would have the option finally, WOW might get bigger boost in full planes.

They need to do something like this with a Beer focus.   Maybe a Rhinegeist Taproom or something?   A place to emphasis the interest in craft beer in the region.

Btw if you have feedback for CVG I'd recommend pulling out your laptop and connecting to wifi, they actually will prompt you for a survey if you do that.

Now that I'm actually flying there (its suddenly a very useful airport for me with the price drops), I'd argue that its generally a pretty nice airport - it feels overbuilt for what it is and more stores could be filled in, but in general operations seem smooth, like the security lines for instance generally operate very smoothly.

They're opening a Moerlein location there (or maybe it already opened)
