CVG to announce new flights today

Staff Cincinnati Business Courier

A low-cost carrier is expected to announce new flights from Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport today, the Enquirer reports.

Frontier Airlines will announce the addition of four nonstop flights a week to Washington, D.C.’s Dulles International Airport that will begin in September.

http://www.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/morning_call/2014/05/cvg-to-announce-new-flights-today.html

Frontier will be up to 19 flights per week in a few months. I hope we can keep this momentum up and become a focus city as Cleveland has become.

I just noticed this ...... Delta is doing something pretty bizarre (and not good, IMO) with their SFO-CVG direct route.

Up until last Thursday (4-June), there was a once-daily leaving San Francisco at Noon, getting in at about 7:30.  Pretty good timing.

Starting Friday (5-June), that once-daily shifts to leaving San Francisco at 9:15 PM, getting in at 4:45 AM (?!?!?!).

Red-eyes have their role, and I personally like the LAX-CVG red-eye and have used it several times.  It doesn't leave LAX until 11:30 PM and gets into CVG at 6:30 AM.  Cincinnati locals can spend an entire day in places like Seattle, Portland, San Diego, Vegas & Phoenix before flying XXX-LAX-CVG back home.  There's also the opportunity for people to connect in CVG for the first bank of morning flights.

But a red-eye that gets in before 5, leaving a city with virtually no feeder flights?  Horrible!  The SFO-CVG returns to a 7:30 PM arrival in late August, but this is a pretty strange thing Delta is doing for the summer.  (conspiracy theorists would say it provides an excuse to pull the flight entirely, because nobody was flying it)

I've been spending a lot of time in Dayton lately, driving from Cincinnati. It's time to abandon CVG and DAY, build Cincinnati-Dayton Int'l in Monroe, link the two centers with high speed rail, and form some kind of economic and governmental cooperative zone.

^I've always thought it AK Steel in Middletown ever closed, a joint Daytonati airport would be a perfect reuse. It would not be too hard to add an interchange at Greentree Road and you would have direct access from I-75.

There is probably not much incentive for Dayton to do this, however, since the city owns/operates and houses DAY within their city limits.

Allegiant CEO: More flights, CVG hub possible

Allegiant Air is working toward adding more flights at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport – and the rapidly growing vacation airline is considering making CVG a hub.

Allegiant Air CEO Andrew Levy told The Enquirer that the low-cost carrier is looking at adding new flights to Las Vegas, Phoenix and Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and expanding service to current destinations – although no commitments have been made.

"We're very optimistic about future growth in Cincinnati," Levy said. "We hope to get a lot bigger. I would expect if current trends continue, we will get a lot bigger, a lot faster than we were able to forecast."

Allegiant plans big expansion at CVG

Low-cost carrier Allegiant Air is expected to announce a major expansion at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport – adding new flights to Phoenix and Fort Lauderdale, The Enquirer has learned.

The popular vacation airline also is expected to double its number of flights each week to three Florida destinations it already serves from CVG – Orlando, Tampa Bay and the Fort Myers region.

CVG will hold a press conference Tuesday morning, spokeswoman Melissa Wideman said.

From the press release on CVG's website.

With today’s announcement, Allegiant will offer more than 5,900 weekly seats to and from CVG,” said Wm.T. (Bill) Robinson III, Kenton County Airport Board Chairman. “Annually, this will create more than 300,000 new opportunities a year for CVG passengers to save money traveling to our most popular destinations.

This is a significant increase and total considering Allegiant wasn't even at CVG until February of last year.

Significant is relative.

A daily direct R/T to Europe or Asia? Now that would be significant.

Significant is relative.

A daily direct R/T to Europe or Asia? Now that would be significant.

A 157% increase in service for a new airline to CVG is significant regardless of where they are flying. Is it going to make people cry for joy like it would if Delta were to announce a daily flight to Frankfurt Germany? No. But there will now be year round service to Phoenix once again but this time it won't be with Delta.

"157%" -- exactly, relative.

Sorry. It's good news, but I can't get excited about it. The "big expansion[!!!11!!!!1]" headline is a bit sensational, and only technically true because of low numbers increasing by low numbers creating big percentages.

Yay, Phoenix!

Again, I apologize. I'll shelve my cynicism for a while now. I'm sure I'd be ecstatic if I regularly did business in Phoenix.

It would be nice to fly out to Phoenix for the Red's Spring Training

It's funny how people complain about the ticket prices from CVG because of the choke hold that Delta has then merely go "Meh" when a low cost airline expands service. This is going to be the first time that Allegiant will be directly competing with Delta so it will be interesting to see which one the people choose and how Delta reacts. It isn't all going to come at once. These airlines need to know that CVG can and will support it's flights.

I agree that it's not a major change but it is an increase in flights, destinations, and seats. I'll take that over another cut any day.

Also, I just thought of this, I think this puts Allegiant really close to Frontier in relation to the number of weekly year-round flights out of CVG. And again, I know it's not a non-stop to Europe but read the master plan then you'll see that they are ahead of predictions.

^Just playing devil's advocate:

1) It could help CVG convince a smaller airline(s) like Allegiant to establish a hub here.  "Putting your money where your mouth is" shows others that you're serious.  Even if they can't land a hub, if they could get a few airlines that don't currently serve CVG like SouthWest or JetBlue to add any flights, that would be a huge short term win.

2) It could open up the whole region to light rail.  Whether the demand is there or not, many people in this area think we need rail from the airport to downtown.  Depending on the chosen route, you could have some stops in northern Kentucky (according to the article) that would let commuters bypass the dreaded Brent Spence Bridge traffic.  Once that happens, how long would it take for east siders to demand the same type of transit amenities that NKY would have?

3) If the route selected does not follow I-75, there's an opportunity here for Cincinnati and CVG to collaborate by adding an auto/train bridge on the west side.

I have used the TANK bus & it's usually empty - just some airport workers.

But, yeah, it might look good in a promotional flyer.

True.  It would probably do well during snow storms as well, but that's only a few days a year.  I've mentioned this in this thread previously, but I've landed at CVG during a snow storm before.  The cabs refused to go anywhere but a Florence hotel, and the buses weren't showing up at all.  If there had been a train that could handle snow/ice, it would have been packed.

Business Courier has an article about running rail from CVG to downtown Cincinnati.

I still don't see the benefit.

http://www.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/morning_call/2014/07/how-cvg-downtown-train-could-become-a-reality.html

A complete, CVG-downtown rail line could be built with the passenger facility charge revenue. But because they may not directly benefit the airport, other stops between downtown and the airport probably would have to be built and paid for using other pots of transportation money, whether they be state, local or federal.

Unless the legislation specifically allows it (this is certainly possible), I still believe no stations would be allowed between downtown and the airport if PFCs pay for the track, without a legislative act.

A light rail stop is in the airports master plan.  I'm glad they've actually included it even though a concrete plan hasn't been studied yet.

For me at least, getting home (Newport) from downtown is much easier than from CVG.  I'd imagine the same would be true for anyone who lives in Ohio.  It definitely would be better for any business travelers that are staying at downtown hotels.  That night, me and three random guys going to Clifton happily paid a cab driver $50 cash (each) to get us to downtown because our only other option was sleeping at the airport.  That guy must have made a killing that night, because he was the only cab that would go north of CVG, he would only ferry between CVG and downtown, and he was cramming in 4 passengers every time.  I was so grateful, I even tipped the guy on top of the ridiculous fare!

Park and ride bus service from Cincinnati State, Seymour Plaza, Rookwood Commons and Tri-County Mall feeding the Ohio side terminus of the LRT line would increase demand.  Cincinnati has gone too long without having its airport connected to the center city.

Allegiant is set to announce yet another expansion in non-stop service from CVG. It was pretty easy for me to come to that conclusion based off of a tweet they sent out earlier. The Enquirer confirmed it just a few minutes ago.

The Las Vegas flights will depart on Thursdays and Sundays beginning December 18th. The press release says the flight will operate using a 216 seat Boeing 757.

Allegiant will be up to 20 flights per week once the route begins operation.

That's a big plane.  Bigger than pretty much all the Delta planes I get out of CVG, which tend to almost invariably be MD-88s and 737s.

Exclusive: Frontier plans big expansion at CVG

Jason Williams, [email protected] 9:37 a.m. EDT August 27, 2014

Low-cost carrier Frontier Airlines is planning a major expansion at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport – doubling its service with new flights to five cities, The Enquirer has learned.

New nonstop flights are planned for Las Vegas, Phoenix, Dallas, Orlando and Fort Lauderdale, Florida. With the exception of Dallas, those are cities low-cost carrier Allegiant Air has added flights to from CVG this year – indicating Frontier is planning to go head-to-head with Allegiant Air on vacation flights.

I think more low cost options are great but I was kinda hoping that Frontier was going to start flying routes that competed with the legacy carriers. I'd prefer if Frontier wasn't doing this to directly compete with Allegiant but more flights and options are a good thing.

Agreed.  I hope both Allegiant and Frontier can hold their own on the markets where they will be competing.

Allegiant Air cuts prices at CVG

Staff Cincinnati Business Courier

Allegiant Air announced Wednesday night that it will drop ticket prices for one day on some of its flights from the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, the Enquirer reports.

Allegiant will offer ticket prices to all six of its vacation destinations for $29 to $68 today. The deal includes a limited number of seats for travel by Feb. 11, excluding Dec. 20-Jan. 5, to Las Vegas, Phoenix, Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, Tampa Bay and Punta Gorda, Fla.

DHL to add 100 jobs at CVG

Andy Brownfield Reporter- Cincinnati Business Courier

Shipping giant DHL will create 100 new jobs at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport as part of a deal with the Kentucky Economic Development Finance Authority to receive tax credits.

DHL wants to increase its efficiency at CVG to handle continued growth. That will include the new hires, equipment and improvements to a tune of $42.5 million.

Grabbed two round trip tickets to Dallas for $59

They charged between $11 and $26 depending on which seat you wanted in the plane and it appeared that you had to take this charge.  Then there is a $20 fee for a carry-on bag vs. $30-40 for luggage.  In all this is more than $50 added to a round-trip.

You don't have to pick a seat but if you don't and are traveling with another person then you won't be guaranteed that you'll be seated together. The flight I checked had seats for $3.

Not really a result of today's news, but I was able to book a round trip non-stop flight to LAX for $404.20 via Delta. I personally find that to be a great deal....

You don't have to pay money to pick the seat and you can carry on a backpack for free. We'll just both use one suitcase and check it (online pre-check for $20x2) so we're still under $100 round trip

Dayton and Cincinnati sharing an airport in-between the two cities makes complete sense.

And yes this whole CVG fiasco is pretty unbelievable. Has been treated like a personal piggy bank while becoming a huge liability for business retention in the region.

I would have to think between planning + funding + construction it would be at least a decade from concept to opening something as massive as a new airport... And the price tag would be in the billions i imagine.  But high speed rail connections two two metro downtowns and serving a large market would alleviate a lot of the childish bickering caused by having an airport serve Cincinnati, yet no control on what happens.

Construction in Denver of DIA has been a huge asset to that region.

Rudimentary photoshopping shows that it would fit in the mostly vacant land around Hunter OH. I wanted to place it further south but Mason and West Chester have so many sprawling neighborhoods we are running out of room!

I am from Northern Kentucky, and while it would be bad for many NKY businesses it would be a huge benefit to the region if the airport was between Cincinnati and Dayton. The fact that Cincinnati's airport is on the south side of the city, and Dayton's is on the north side of their city just makes no sense. And as was mentioned before this could be a huge spur to developing regional light rail.

Here’s how CVG ticket prices stack up in the latest report

Despite the addition of more flights from low-cost carriers at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, its fares continue to top the nation.

CVG is still the nation's most expensive airport, according to new data from the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Allegiant is announcing new flights to Jacksonville Florida (JAX) today from CVG. The twice weekly flights will begin February 12,2015.  Introductory fares will begin as low as $65.

Allegiant will also announce an additional destination next week to a southern location, along with 1-2 more announcements around the new year. Good news for CVG!!!

Allegiant is also announcing service starting up in Indianapolis. The Indy destinations will be similar to CVG's offerings (4-5 designations though).

That's interesting. I'm going to speculate that the destinations that will be announced around the new year will either be Caribbean or west coast. Allegiant will have exhausted it's reserve of unserved southern destinations from CVG by then. I'm extremely intrigued.

Well now I'm even more intrigued.

Gonna guess Branson is one.

The other is going to be Peoria!  FINALLY!!!
