Company plans $40 million expansion, adds 250 jobs at CVG

By Chris Wetterich  –  Staff reporter and columnist, Cincinnati Business Courier

Mar 31, 2022

A Miami-based aircraft maintenance company is building a second hangar at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, making a $40 million capital investment and creating 250 new jobs.

FEAM Aero opened its first 103,000 square foot hangar at CVG at the beginning of 2020 and it already has grown from 200 to 283 employees, according to airport documents. Like its first hanger, the second will serve CVG’s burgeoning cargo business, as well as some passenger aircraft.

“This is really a continuation of our expanding in the air cargo market. It also really increases our capacity to do more work,” said Cam Murphy, the president of FEAM Aero, adding the expansion will allow the company to boost its services as cargo businesses grow at CVG.

Airline’s CVG expansion is delayed

By Chris Wetterich  –  Staff reporter and columnist, Cincinnati Business Courier

Alaska Airlines' plan to add flights from Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky to Seattle is being delayed.

Starting June 16, the airline planned to add one daily flight to Seattle on top of the one it already operates. But because of a pilot shortage, the airline is slashing 2% of its total flights through the end of June.

In a news release, Alaska said it was suffering from a backlog in its pilot training program because of the Omicron variant of Covid-19. Due to training delays, it has 63 fewer pilots for April than it had planned for at the beginning of the year. It schedules flight crews three months in advance.

Well June 17th Delta is adding a second flight to Seattle daily (630am and 5pm), so Alaska is going to have an uphill battle.

Delta adds additional service to West Coast from CVG

Delta Air Lines is expanding its service to a key West Coast business destination from Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport.

Delta will begin offering two flights per day to and from Seattle starting on June 16.

Demand for the CVG-Seattle route has surged since Alaska Airlines began service to the Pacific Northwest’s largest city last year, according to CVG officials. Seattle is now one of CVG’s top five destinations.

Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport plans $30M Concourse B overhaul

Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport is planning a $30 million overhaul of Concourse B, which is mostly occupied by Delta Air Lines, a major project that could get started this summer.

The concourse has 28 gates, with a few occupied by American Airlines. The facility was constructed in the early 1990s and needs repair and refurbishment. The $30 million figure is an estimate, not a final cost.

The project will include replacing 28 passenger boarding bridges that were installed in 1993.

Security check technology paves way for shorter wait times at CVG

If you’re planning to fly out of Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport soon, expect shorter wait times, Courier media partner Local12 reports.

Computed tomography (CT) screening technology is now installed at every security lane at CVG. CT technology results in fewer bag checks, which helps bring down wait times.

Air Canada resuming service to Toronto from CVG after nearly 2-year hiatus

An international carrier will resume service this weekend at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport to a route that was suspended for nearly two years.

Air Canada will resume nonstop service May 15 between CVG and Toronto Pearson Airport (YYZ) after it was halted for nearly two years due to the pandemic. A ribbon-cutting relaunch celebration will take place at the gate area with giveaways for travelers.

The twice-daily flights depart CVG at 6:10 a.m. and 4:40 p.m., and arrive at YYZ at 7:42 a.m. and 6:12 p.m. The flights will be on a 50-seat CRJ200. Toronto is the only city Air Canada serves out of CVG.

Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport has best month since pandemic started

By one measure, Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport in April had its best month since the pandemic started.

The passenger volume in April was at 84% of what it was in the same month in 2019, the best percentage the airport has posted in such a comparison since March 2020 when airports and airlines were sent into a tailspin by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The recovery continues to be powered by leisure travel, which has almost completely returned to pre-pandemic levels. That’s borne out by CVG’s two ultra-low cost carriers, Frontier and Allegiant Airlines. Allegiant’s number of enplaned passengers was at 99% of 2019 levels in April, while Frontier’s was at nearly 130%. Both airlines offer a low base price, with fees for everything from a seat assignment to beverages to overhead baggage.

Delta Air Lines flight cuts will hit Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport

Passengers flying from Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport will see fewer flights from Delta Air Lines this summer as a part of the airline’s nationwide cutbacks, but the schedule trimming will not hit CVG as badly as other airports.

Nationwide, Delta has cut 7,600 flights from its July and August schedules to “strategically … build additional resilience in our system and improve operational reliability,” the company said.

At CVG, the airline will cut 31 flights and 4,256 seats in July and August, according to data provided to the Business Journals by Cirium Inc. That’s about 1.2% of its flights and 1.4% seats for July and August.

Delta set to resume Paris service Aug. 2; here’s how sales for the flight are faring

Delta Air Lines will resume nonstop service from Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport to Paris in August, and officials said its return will provide key insights into passenger counts for the remainder of 2022.

The flight, a key market for the region and CVG’s only transatlantic flight, has been grounded since March 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Bobby Spann, CVG’s vice president for external affairs, said everything is on schedule for its much-anticipated return Aug. 2.

He said the flight was “almost sold out” with just under two weeks to go. The aircraft Delta has assigned to the route has more than 216 available seats.

American Airlines’ CVG push: ‘We will be a force to reckon with’

By Chris Wetterich  –  Staff reporter and columnist, Cincinnati Business Courier

Aug 18, 2022

Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport is a bit of a rarity when it comes to American Airlines’ network — it’s not a hub, connecting passengers to destinations across the world, but it’s also not simply another dot on American’s map.

With the addition of Raleigh-Durham, Dallas-based American now provides nonstop service to three non-hub cities, including Austin and Boston, for a total of 12 airports.

American, the world’s largest airline, has added the additional destinations because CVG passengers were connecting to those cities enough via American’s hubs that it justified establishing standalone nonstop flights, and it plans to continue looking for more such opportunities.

CVG was trying to court BA with a flight to LHR. BA is looking for the largest handout from NA cities to start flights. PIT ponied up cash, i just doubt CVG and the region are going to do the same. Unless American continues to build up flights and additional destinations it could be beneficial. I consider LHR out of the question for the time being.

I've found it interesting that for a number of places I've wanted to travel recently, Delta doesn't have direct flights but some of the other airlines do. Delta may be the biggest carrier at CVG and I also want to stick with them for status reasons, but it's a pain to transfer through ATL, MSP, or SLC when some of the other carriers have direct options.

I am doing a status match with American. I have been a diamond for about 5 years with Delta, but service offerings have been harder to come by with them out of CVG. I was hoping SFO, ORD, and DFW would have been brought back but they pushed them off again. AA bringing RDU is a punch in the gut to DL since that was a busy connector route they didnt bring back after COVID.

Delta Air Lines Tests Dual Jetbridge Boarding In Cincinnati

Delta Air Lines is trying out a new way to save time during the boarding of its aircraft. The carrier is testing an approach using two gates for the boarding process of its Boeing 737 aircraft to see if this has any long-term potential.

According to a report by View From The Wing, Delta is currently trying out the new method at Cincinnati Airport (CVG) as it is a much smaller station for Delta than the hub it used to be. This means that the airport has an extra gate to accommodate the procedure.

Welcome to the world, America.

CVG still waiting on return of nonstop service to four markets after Covid-19

Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport is down to four markets that have not been served since onset of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Still missing are Kansas City, St. Louis, San Francisco and Hartford, Conn. All four business-focused destinations had service from Delta Air Lines before the pandemic.

Earlier this year, Delta told CVG officials it estimated it would resume flying to San Francisco, Chicago and Dallas in early September, but that did not occur. Airlines have continued to face a staffing crunch and struggled with extensive delays and cancelations during the peak summer travel season.

I really don't see MCI, STL, or BDL coming back to be honest. SFO will most likely come back with Asian Markets reopening. I am holding out hope DFW and ORD are brought back by Delta. Hard to fly someone else when you have built up status with another airline.

Saw that Cleveland is getting a Dublin route. What route do you think we will see next at CVG? I’d love to see a Dublin route or even Berlin route.

I would definitely take Berlin over Dublin.

I'd be happy with pretty much any other city added. The largest airports are London Heathrow, Amsterdam, and Frankfurt. So if you are looking for the best options to only have one transfer, those would be the best.

3 hours ago, Ucgrad2015 said:

Cleveland is paying a large sum of undisclosed money for three years of service from Aer Lingus to Dublin. CVG and the region doesn't pay Delta for the Paris route. If we want another European route, we will have to pay large incentives like Cleveland, and you better believe Delta will want money in their hand too.

CVG got lucky a couple years ago with WOW that the region only covered marketing and advertising for the route and nothing else.

British Airways is always looking for handouts I.E. Pittsburgh... With the larger American presence now at CVG, British makes the most sense on connectivity for One World, I just don't see it happening without money ponied up.

Berlin is unique, because its the other major city airport in Germany without a hub presence of any airline. Lufthansa has hubs in Frankfort and Munich, but not Berlin. Unless Condor provides the flight its seems like a very niche route that would struggle with usage between CVG and BER.

Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport's cargo business pushes it to a new high

JetBlue founder David Neeleman brings Breeze, his new airline, to CVG

Breeze Airways is coming to Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport starting in February, with San Francisco and Charleston, S.C., being the upstart carrier’s initial nonstop destinations.

Airline veteran and entrepreneur David Neeleman, who founded JetBlue, launched leisure carrier Breeze in 2021, hoping to capitalize on mid-sized cities lacking point-to-point flights to each other. It's Neeleman’s fifth airline.

“I think Cincinnati’s a place that needs all the air service it can get,” Neeleman told the Business Courier. "There’s a (Department of Transportation) database that shows us how many people are traveling from San Francisco to Cincinnati. There’s a good number of them. We know there’s a community of interest.”

The Delta station manager and the SkyClub manager at CVG are just confused by the lack of attack or promptness by Delta. American brings in BOS, AUS, and RDU. Delta only counters with bringing back AUS. Breeze arrives with SFO, will Delta finally bring it back? Doubt it. The numbers for ORD and DFW on Delta are so high on avg that both cities should have been brought back and they havent. Delta is more worried about the NE corridor than legacy stations with large loyalty numbers.

Breeze Airways CEO David Neeleman explains decision behind CVG expansion

On 93% of leisure carrier Breeze Airways’ routes, it has no competition.

That is one of the reasons CEO David Neeleman, a longtime aviation entrepreneur and the founder of JetBlue Airlines, picked Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport and a nonstop flight to San Francisco for the 1-year-old airline’s latest expansion. CVG currently has no direct connection to the Bay Area.

“We’re trying to find these pockets of pain where people have to make a connection and pay high fares,” Neeleman told the Business Courier in an interview.

Breeze will compete on the CVG-Charleston, S.C., route it is starting. Allegiant Air, an ultra-low cost carrier, offers twice-a-week service there, the same frequency as Breeze.

Delta doesn't fly CVG-SFO anymore?

Delta cut the route at the beginning of the pandemic and still hasn't brought it back. I've been flying out of CVG to the Bay Area once a month for work since summer 2021 and I would love if the direct flight was restored. Been a pain in the butt spending over 8 hours travelling + a required layover to travel between the 2 cities. Can't believe Delta or United won't fly the route, especially since SFO is a United hub.

Unfortunately Breeze flying twice a week doesn't help me at all, especially with the odd choice to offer the flights only Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Epic Aviation coming to CVG, plans $4 million investment

By Chris Wetterich  –  Staff reporter and columnist, Cincinnati Business Courier

Oct 25, 2022

When FEAM Aero built its first maintenance hangar at CVG, airport and local economic development officials hoped the company’s presence would spark a flurry of economic development and job training possibilities, particularly in the well-paying aircraft maintenance field.

CVG’s board has approved a lease with Epic Aviation, a new company FEAM is working with that will build a new aviation maintenance training facility on 4 acres of vacant airport land, with the goal of training a pipeline of qualified aircraft maintenance technicians.

The lease will run for 30 years, with two, 10-year extension options. Epic Aviation will invest $4 million, create 10 new jobs at the site and train about 20 students per class. The teaching jobs will pay about $50,000 per year.
