Breeze Airways adds Orange County, Providence flights at CVG

One of Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport's newest carriers is adding two more direct routes locally before its inaugural flights have even begun.

On Wednesday, Breeze Airways announced its adding direct routes locally to both Orange County, Calif., and Providence, R.I. The announcement comes roughly two months after the carrier launched by JetBlue founder David Neeleman revealed it would launch service locally, starting with San Francisco and Charleston, S.C., this February.

Providence route is heavily utilized, it use to exist back in the day out of CVG. Delta station manager said about a year ago, DL just expects you to fly into BOS and drive to Providence. I have done it before too much risk with traffic on 95 to be always successful. If this route was daily that be great, but might come in handy if i ever need to be there on tuesday or thursday.

CVG’s cargo business hits a new high

By Chris Wetterich  –  Staff reporter and columnist, Cincinnati Business Courier

Dec 28, 2022

Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport continues to send staggering amounts of cargo airborne from its runways, setting a new all-time record in October. It's a trend that could continue as the holiday shipping season reaches it peaks.

Companies moved 190,562 tons of cargo through the airport in October, up from the previous all-time record set in September of 180,184. It’s the third month in a row CVG has broken the record.

Overall, cargo volume is up 18.2%, year over year, for 2022.

“I can’t say enough about how cargo does tremendous things,” said Bobby Spann, the airport’s vice president for external affairs.

On that note, pax numbers were also strong for October:

Variance: +11.86%

2022: 6,313,670

Variance: +23.19%

Assuming we continue to see similar YoY growth, CVG is on pace to see ~7.7 million passengers in 2022. Anecdotally, November and December seemed very busy for the airport, so there is an outside shot of approaching 8 million pax this year. That is most of the way back to pre-COVID traffic levels.

I would venture to guess we wouldn't see yoy growth the same next year. The first several months of 2021 still didn't have a COVID vaccine available to the public. It wasn't until April or May when most people were getting vaccinated.

But I'm sure we'll still see some growth there in 2023 unless something catastrophic happens like another pandemic or a big recession

Agreed. Considering the strong possibility of at least a mild economic slowdown, we probably won't see 20% YoY growth in 2023.

We should see decent YoY growth in the first couple months of the year as vaccine uptake was still pretty low in January and February of 2022, and business travel was very quiet.

My guess would be around 5-7% growth in 2023.

And after a long wait for October numbers, November pax numbers were just published:

November

2021: 585,493

2022: 630,912

Variance: +7.76%

November Cargo (tons)

2021: 158,273

Another decent month of passenger growth, but I think we are now starting see the effects of the economic slowdown along with the pressure of higher holiday airfares. We'll see where the dust settles in December.

Also, CVG set another cargo record with nearly 200,000 tons moved in November. This is the fourth consecutive month of record cargo movement at the airport!

To be clear, there is no economic slowdown. We are still seeing strong job growth and unemployment numbers, and inflation has moderated considerably in the past few months. This might be the best economy we've seen in quite awhile.

I do agree with you that we are still near full employment. And I certainly don't want this to turn into an argument, but there are signs of a weakened economy. Consumer discretionary spending is still depressed and business discretionary spending (i.e. travel) is much tighter now than it was 6-8 months ago.

I'm not beating the drum on an economic collapse or even a recession, but there are macroeconomic factors that are pertinent to air travel in this context.

Would like to see either American or (preferably Delta) make CVG a focus city again (if not mini hub). Wishful thinking i know. I really miss having Comair and the 600 daily flight option. Prices did suck at that time, but back in the day, I loved the weekend saver flights on Delta and was able to take a lot of last minute trips that way.

We've seen and talk about whether AAL is really going to put its money where its mouth is and continue to expand here at CVG. They are off to a positive start with these new flights, though.

I'm curious if DAL responds. They tried to make a push in AUS pre-COVID, but AAL stomped all over them and they gave up. CVG certainly has the advantage of being a former DAL hub, but I'm guessing we've lost a lot of those DAL elites over the past decade

CVG as a former Delta Hub is the reason for the Amazon Hub. It had a highly developed runway system that could fly worldwide but was way underutilized since Delta scaled down operations. It put it in the perfect spot to land Amazon. The only other comparable facility would have been Memphis but they already had a huge Fedex presence so they likely were not in consideration. So in that area, Delta helped us land the Amazon hub.

That being said, we need more regional connections. I know the option of flying to Cleveland or Nashville or Indy will never return, but it was nice to have options to fly to Grand Rapids or other smaller markets like Syracuse, Rochester or Buffalo when you needed (at least on a limited basis).  Would love to see more options like that happen again.

Amazon also located here because of the DHL hub.  Amazon Prime Air piggy-backed in DHL's building for several years.  DHL operated overnight, as it always has, and Amazon operated during the day, using the exact same conveyors/sorters/etc., except they put a whole second system of electronics on the lines.

DHL opened at Cincinnati's airport way back in part because of the Delta maintenance facility located on the grounds.  They moved to Wilmington for a number of years but came back.

One of Cincinnati's largest and fastest-growing craft breweries is already under construction on its newest location.

Covington-based Braxton Brewing Co. announced Thursday its newest taproom is under construction at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) and is slated to open this spring.

Braxton is opening a 1,500-square-foot taproom inside the airport's Concourse A. Braxton CEO Jake Rouse said in a Facebook post that he's honored to show off his company to the 9 million passengers that pass through CVG annually. CVG restaurants changing, Wendy's added, McDonald's departing

Passengers at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) soon will be able to get a Frosty before hopping on their flight, but their days of ordering a Big Mac are over.

McDonald’s has shut down its longtime location in the airport’s Terminal B food court without giving much of an explanation, CVG officials said. But the board that oversees the airport approved a lease Tuesday with Wendy’s, which will open a restaurant in the former Torn Basil pizza location.

Most of the flights in Terminal B are from Delta Air Lines.

“We were a little confused when they sent us a termination notice,” Paul Hegedus, CVG’s vice president of commercial management, said of McDonald’s departure. “They were at the airport for 30 years. They just said it was an internal business decision.”

2022 final passenger & cargo numbers for CVG:

December

2021: 571,470

2022: 628,834

Variance: +10.04%

2021: 6,282,253

2022: 7,573,416

December Cargo (tons)

2021: 168,059

2022: 163,050

Variance: -2.98%

YTD Cargo (tons)

2021: 1,694,595

2022: 1,978,447

Variance: +16.75%

Passenger traffic growth remained pretty consistent over the last quarter of 2022, with around 10% YoY increases for each month. Overall pax volume ended the year at 7.5 million, which shows continued recovery from 2020. We still have a way to go before the airport is back at 2019 levels (~9 million), but it's still a trend in the right direction.

Despite a down month in December, cargo movements at CVG continue to impress. The airport saw nearly 2 million tons of cargo pass through in 2022, which is another all time record. Before December, the airport saw four consecutive months of record cargo movements. CVG has long held down the position of 7th largest cargo airport in the US (generally right behind ORD and MIA), so we'll see where the dust settles after 2022.

CVG passenger numbers: Airport hits a ‘new normal’

By Chris Wetterich  –  Staff reporter and columnist, Cincinnati Business Courier

Jan 24, 2023

The number of passengers boarding at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport was down about 17% in 2022 compared with pre-pandemic 2019, and airport officials believe that will be “the new normal.”

Roughly 7.6 million passengers came through the airport last year, less than the 8 million to 9 million range CVG saw before the pandemic, with 2019 seeing 9.1 million passengers. Passenger traffic was up 21% in 2022 compared with 2021.

MORE

Good to see the growth from AAL (up 12% since 2019), but this is a good point about a new normal. Leisure travel is fully back to 2019 levels, but business travel is obviously down since then.

Unless we see major expansion from one or more airlines, it will be tough for CVG to return to those 2019 levels. The only other option would be an increase in connecting traffic. I don't have the numbers anywhere, but I would guess >85% of traffic at CVG is O/D.

Not that it is a regular route, but United is adding a non-stop to Kansas City for this weekend for Bengals traffic. So, at least for a 2 days we have non-stop service to KC again. :)  Small victories.

Breeze Airways starts service from CVG today

By Chris Wetterich  –  Staff reporter and columnist, Cincinnati Business Courier

Feb 8, 2023

In a big win for the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, a new airline will begin today serving passengers here. It will eventually fly nonstop to three destinations currently unavailable to local travelers.

Breeze Airway's first flights will be to San Francisco and Charleston, S.C. It also will start service to Orange County, Calif., and Providence, R.I., on March 30.

Breeze was launched in 2021 by airline veteran and entrepreneur David Neeleman, who founded JetBlue. He hoped to capitalize on mid-sized cities lacking point-to-point flights to each other. It's Neeleman’s fifth airline.

Why Breeze Airways is already expanding at CVG

By Chris Wetterich  –  Staff reporter and columnist, Cincinnati Business Courier

Feb 9, 2023

Even before Breeze Airways launched service from Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport to San Francisco and Charleston, S.C., on Wednesday, it already had announced it would add two more destinations.

It’s possible, in part, because of the atypical way the airline is organizing its routes, Breeze President Tom Doxey told the Business Courier in an interview.

For all of its CVG flights so far, Breeze is starting the aircraft in an Eastern Seaboard city, flying to Cincinnati and picking up passengers, then proceeding onto the West Coast without deboarding the passengers flying from the East. That’s true of its Charleston-Cincinnati-San Francisco route and will also be the case when its Providence, R.I.-Cincinnati-Orange County, Calif., service launches March 30. The airline calls it a “Breeze-through.” It allows the airline to supplement demand for cities without too much inconvenience to passengers.

MORE

^That "breeze-through" is very interesting. Why don't other airlines do this?

I could see it working for budget airlines or airlines that serve a limited number of vacation destinations. Pick up passengers in City A, stop in City B to pick up a few more, then go to your destination. But that's pretty different than the hub-and-spoke model used by Delta and other large airlines.

And one of the reasons I don't fly Southwest.   Years ago I spent extra on a business-select flight out of Midway.   When I boarded the aircraft, there were only middle seats left despite being the first one on board.   When I called Southwest to complain about the extra fare getting me nothing but my first choice of middle seats they really didn't care.   Have never been back since, unless it's a short hop like Burbank-Vegas.

Southwest isn't exactly like that though, they are more 'point to point' because you can purchase just one leg of the flight. This 'breeze through' implies that the Charleston people can't get out in Cincy, or at least not buy a ticket priced and planned to do so I doubt they would hold you against your will if you tried to get out.

That sounds like a significant outlier. There’s generally no more than a handful of passengers staying on the plane.

Passengers that originate in CHS absolutely can purchase a ticket to CVG as well as a ticket to SFO and vice versa.

The "Breeze thru" is essentially a connecting flight where you wouldn't have to get off the plane.

Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport fares stable after the pandemic

Fares at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) are nearly identical to what they were before the pandemic, according to data from the U.S. Department of Transportation.

In the third quarter of 2022, CVG’s average fare was $363.82. In the same period of 2019 before the Covid-19 pandemic began, the inflation-adjusted average fare was $363.11, according to federal data.

CVG’s fares rank as the 31st-cheapest in the nation when compared with the top 100 airports in terms of passengers. That continues CVG’s five-year streak of being the cheapest airport to fly from in a region that includes five other major airports – Indianapolis, Columbus, Lexington, Louisville and Dayton – within a two-hour or less drive from downtown Cincinnati. But in 2019, CVG’s fares were the 20th-cheapest.

Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport eyes terminal refresh

Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport’s terminal could get its first refresh in about a decade.

Staff has begun discussing parameters for a renovation of the terminal, which has two concourses, A and B. Areas and systems that could be refreshed include the restrooms, baggage handling, lighting, artwork and other public-facing spaces.

CVG officials say the airport’s terminal is aging and may need additional capacity as CVG continues to grow. The airport previously demolished its obsolete Terminals 1 and 2 to build a new consolidated rental car facility, a $175 million investment.

I wonder if this gives CVG a competitive advantage over other airports in Ohio/Kentucky and Indiana given their ability to draw from 2 and possibly 3 states for grants and funding. I know for the British Airways route, OhioJobs kicked in a bunch and so did Kentucky. I thought I also heard that Indiana played a role too in helping facilitate the route.

This isn’t true at all from what I understand and would make no sense. CVG to London is of very little help to the state of Indiana. Indianapolis is competition to CVG and Indy also has Chicago’s international flights nearby.

I am probably confusing Indiana with other things they have worked with Cincinnati on (I think it was probably the World Cup bid maybe), but you have to figure that with Ohio and Kentucky working together to provide financial incentives to CVG, it gives them an advantage over say Cleveland, Columbus, Indy and Louisville as peer airports in attracting more routes.

Breeze Airways extends its CVG schedule into November

It’s official: Breeze Airways will offer all four of its current destinations from Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport into the fall.

CVG’s newest airline will continue to offer service to San Francisco, Charleston, S.C., Orange County, Calif., and Providence, R.I., through mid-November.

...

Breeze plans to launch a new route from CVG to Richmond, Va., on May 19.

Epic Aviation expands project aimed at bringing high-paying jobs to CVG

By Chris Wetterich  –  Staff reporter and columnist, Cincinnati Business Courier

Apr 17, 2023 Updated Apr 17, 2023, 6:50pm EDT

When Epic Aviation and FEAM Aero first announced they were bringing a $4 million aircraft maintenance and repair school that will allow high school graduates to train for high-paying jobs, the early estimates were that Epic would build a 10,000 square foot hangar, five classrooms and train 20-plus students per class.

At Monday’s groundbreaking, Epic officials said their capital investment is up to $7 million, the hangar will be 15,000 square feet, have 10 classrooms and train 250 students per class.

The demand for aircraft maintenance personnel is high nationwide, but it’s sky-high in Cincinnati because of the cargo growth at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, allowing Epic to increase its planned capacity.
