January 2, 201114 yr Again, we look at the negatives, not looking at the positives. This could be a catalyst for more housing, restaurants, daily needs and restaurant in the FWB. And help it build into a bigger neighborhood/destination. I'm glad it's not on the lakefront. The museum and science center should be working together to bring other attractions for people of all ages to there location.
January 2, 201114 yr But still, I would much prefer a location on the lakefront. Where on the lakefront could an aquarium break ground this year like the one in the Flats is going to?
January 2, 201114 yr But still, I would much prefer a location on the lakefront. Where on the lakefront could an aquarium break ground this year like the one in the Flats is going to? Good point. An aquarium would work if it was built with the first phase of the lakefront plan (next to the mathers museum), but that obviously isn't happening for quite a while.
January 2, 201114 yr I'm hoping that one of the other aquariums talked about in this thread gets off the ground some time in the future, but it's good that this project will occur. And I agree- the more attractions in and around downtown, the better.
January 3, 201114 yr Interesting and perhaps telling that one of the larger finders if thus aquarium are the parking lot people at AMPCO.

January 8, 201114 yr Here's the new Cleveland Aquarium website: http://www.greaterclevelandaquarium.com/ It talks about Phase II a little bit also.
January 8, 201114 yr I was a little nervous at first at the size of the aquarium but the company running it looks top notch. I'm excited for this project, its going to be good for the area
January 8, 201114 yr I'm really confused...so is this aquarium not happening anymore? http://www.clevelandaquarium.org/photo/100921-night-view
January 8, 201114 yr I'm really confused...so is this aquarium not happening anymore? http://www.clevelandaquarium.org/photo/100921-night-view This has never been a tangible project. It's an organization of very dedicated people trying to raise money to build something like it.
January 8, 201114 yr And dont forget the third proposal (Great waters (or Great Lakes Aquarium)) by some other dedicated fish people (these are the ones that I always mixed up and thought they should merge their efforts) The powerhouse one is strictly a tourist attraction/money maker one for Jacobs, and wasnt out of a love of marine life. Not to say that it couldnt be nice. Heres a story from the Toledo Blade last year that talked about the 3 different ones.. http://toledoblade.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20100118/NEWS24/1180348/-1/NEWS
January 8, 201114 yr From the website: "Construction of Phase 1 of the development is to commence immediately and the Greater Cleveland Aquarium is expected to open in the fall of 2011." Has anyone been done there? Has work begun?
January 8, 201114 yr While I like the scope and proposel of the Jacob's Aquarium I would much rather have in near the Great Lakes Science Center or in the new East Bank Development. I feel that we need to concentrate the destinations and amenities near the lake front rather than spreading ourselves too thin.

January 9, 201114 yr Geez, when was this picture taken? http://www.greaterclevelandaquarium.com/images/high-resolution/Flats_night.jpg I'd like to see renderings of the actual Cleveland facility and how it fits in with the Powerhouse. You would think if they're breaking ground and opening this year, they'd have renderings somewhere...
January 9, 201114 yr Geez, when was this picture taken? Probably 1996. All the bridges were lit for, and immediately following the bicentennial. In the years thereafter, all but the Center Street and Detroit-Superior bridges had their lighting turned off. Awesome picture, BTW. Lots of memories. January 10, 201114 yr There's a Flats memories thread around here. Let's create some new memories with the remaining entertainment venues, the East Bank project and, of course, the new aquarium (hint hint).... January 10, 201114 yr Guess I'm warming to the project a little bit more, learning of the expansion possibilities... I just didn't want this to be a rush/half-ass project, and it looks like it may not be. And let's face it, as nice a concept and place as it is, the Powerhouse has been struggling for years to keep major restaurant tenants. Maybe the aquarium can rejuvenate both this building as well as Nautica and the Sugarhouse/Shooters area. Plus, I agree with Jborger that I'd love a second phase to cover up that huge, ugly gulf of surface parking that separates the Powerhouse from the Sugarhouse area...
January 10, 201114 yr I'm not holding my breath for any spin off from this, other than adding a little business to other Powerhouse venues, but that's OK: It's using existing parking, existing underused building, mostly private funds, won't be competing with non profits for limited local philanthropy and is actually close to breaking ground. Which is all pretty awesome.
January 10, 201114 yr 'Howl at the Moon' closes to make way for aquarium http://www.wkyc.com/news/news_article.aspx?storyid=168895 I thought Howl at the Moon was moving over to the building where Shooters is, but the article doesn't mention anything about this.
January 10, 201114 yr I think they're gone for good. http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=270849434095#!/group.php?gid=270849434095&v=wall "Don Mitri It's "Lights Out" this Saturday January 15th! Howl at the Moon Cleveland will play its last song after 20 amazing years!"
January 11, 201114 yr I haven't been there in 15? years 'Bout the same here. But this doesn't really belong in the aquarium thread. I've started a new thread to discussion Howl at the Moon's closing at: http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,25259.msg536678.html#msg536678 "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
January 25, 201114 yr Cleveland Planning Commission has added a page for the Aquarium in its new/pending development projects section: http://planning.city.cleveland.oh.us/projects/detail.php?ID=42 "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
January 25, 201114 yr Howl at the Moon should have done so much better. It was borderline depressing there on a Friday night. I bet if it went to 4th or Warehouse District it would rake. Big Bang here in Columbus.... you can't even get in past 11 on the weekends. Hopefully it'll be back.
January 25, 201114 yr Thanks for posting the link KJP. The plans look fantastic. It would be nice to know what exactly is part of phase 1 (aka the SeaTube?) but it sounds like financing and planning is already underway for Phase 2 so I guess this thing is a go. I'm so happy that it will be easily accessible to the Towpath. Now if only they could finish that thing...
January 27, 201114 yr In Crains: Groundbreaking set for Cleveland aquarium project By JAY MILLER 10:32 am, January 27, 2011 The fish finally will have a home in the Flats. An e-mailed invitation is announcing the Feb. 2 groundbreaking for the $33 million first phase of what’s being called the Greater Cleveland Aquarium. It will be housed in the Powerhouse on the west bank of the Flats. http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20110127/FREE/110129824
January 28, 201114 yr A $40 million Phase II is planned. It will include a series of glass atriums along the Cuyahoga River that will honor Cleveland's waterfront history. **This is an idea that I've been visualizing for a long long time. I'm sure they would be glad to take me on as a consultant. :) In Crains: Groundbreaking set for Cleveland aquarium project By JAY MILLER 10:32 am, January 27, 2011 The fish finally will have a home in the Flats. January 28, 201114 yr I wonder if our illustrious governor will show up as he did for the medical mart, after all he has done for those two projects
January 28, 201114 yr I would have preferred the non-profit group to build next to great lakes science center.. but overall I like this too. Tied in with FEB, its starting to spell some nice upgrades to the flats. This really spells good things for the future of the flats.. for downtown? not sure.
January 28, 201114 yr Do you guys like the name? I don't like the "Greater" in it. Makes it sound like its at Rockside and 77 or something. If "Cleveland Aquarium" is already taken (which i'm sure it is off the table--EC would know), how about: Aquarium of America Cleveland City Aquarium Cuyahoga River Aquarium Cleveland Cuyahoga River Aquarium New Cleveland Aquarium Aquarium of Cleveland
January 28, 201114 yr ^how about Burning River Aquarium? That would draw attention. http://www.mainstreetpainesville.org/

January 28, 201114 yr ^It doesn't matter where I live. If I lived in Detroit or LA, i'd still prefer "Cleveland Aquarium" to "Greater Cleveland Aquarium". The attraction is in Cleveland and if it has any geographic name (like Cleveland Museum of Art vs. a non-geographic name like The Metropolitan Museum of Art or the Smithsonian Institution), it should be Cleveland-something (not ohio, not greater cleveland, not north coast, etc.). "Greater Cleveland" suburbanizes--and thus--mediocritizes--the name and image.

January 28, 201114 yr I don't think a name on the aquarium is all that important. This thing could be named "The Greatest Attraction in the World" and could mean nothing. Let's focus less on what its called an more on what it will do to attract visitors, stimulate our economy, or add to our city. Although I do think 'The Wet Spot' could be an excellent phase 3...
