February 2, 201114 yr Hey Everyone: GROUNDBREAKING Tomorrow! EDIT: I spoke too soon. It has been postponed due to icy weather. http://www.wkyc.com/news/local/story.aspx?storyid=172875&catid=3
February 2, 201114 yr Thanks for the heart attack Murray Hill :P I read the comments. One person thinks the aquarium is only set to be built as a place for parents to drop off their kids while they gamble away their college funds in nearby casinos. haha

February 12, 201114 yr I can't believe there has been no media news on the upcoming ground breaking. Where is the easy positive press??
February 13, 201114 yr Went to a show at the Improv in the Powerhouse a couple of weeks ago and on the doors of the Powerhouse Pub, there were pages from a magazine that actually showed complete renderings of the new aquarium project with floor plans and everything. I was able to find this online, although the floorplans aren't that big: http://ibmag.com/Main/Archive/Go_Fish_10017.aspx
February 13, 201114 yr from the article: "...a restaurant with an underwater theme." So maybe we'll be able to eat Chilean sea bass while having them also swim around us?
February 14, 201114 yr ^ I prefer to call them by their original name-- Patagonian toothfish. Much more appetizing, don't you think? ::chuckle::
February 14, 201114 yr I hate "ceremonial ground breakings," but it has begun! http://www.wkyc.com/news/local/story.aspx?storyid=175147&catid=45
April 11, 201114 yr The Cleveland Aquarium has a facebook page FYI: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Cleveland-Aquarium/125490420796609
April 11, 201114 yr This whole project came along so quickly it seems (the public side, I am sure the private side was turning gears long before we knew) so I think people are just surprised. As far as quality of life this is a big addition to the city for young families etc and long run if it gets a good following it can add a lot.
April 23, 201114 yr Cleveland aquarium developer 'gung-ho' on city 7:32 PM, Apr 22, 2011 | comments CLEVELAND -- New Zealand developer behind the Flats aquarium project updates us on the plans. Ian Mellsop is in town to see how his new aquarium is shaping up. Mellsop is the founder of Marinescape, a New Zealand firm that's built 24 aquariums all over the world. It's seeking to gain entry to the U.S.and is doing that with its first American aquarium in the old Powerhouse on the west bank of the Flats. http://www.wkyc.com/news/article/186764/45/Cleveland-aquarium-developer-gung-ho-on-city
April 25, 201114 yr Favorite quote from the above article Dave Grunenwald, Jacobs Investments Development V.P., said, "This will be a different city in 36 months. It will."
April 26, 201114 yr Favorite quote from the above article Dave Grunenwald, Jacobs Investments Development V.P., said, "This will be a different city in 36 months. It will." Me likes. That could be signature worthy.
April 26, 201114 yr I walked down to the Powerhouse about a week ago with tlazar39 ... we both now work a couple of blocks away in one of the Stonebridge buildings. There was a whole lot of nothing going on. We walked in and all around and it looked abandoned with the exception of a sales & marketing luncheon going on upstairs. Can't wait until this really gets going. :-)
June 13, 201114 yr HUMOR: Yes, but we decided not to share anything here on UO about it. SERIOUS: When there is something to report, the UO community is pretty good about reporting on it. July 15, 201113 yr Yeah.... construction. Anyone got photos? "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
July 16, 201113 yr Anyone know when hiring will commence/if they need an out-of-work (slightly misplaced) marine biologist specializing in tropical marine ecology? I come with AAUS authorization and a sincere love of Cleveland too!!!!
July 19, 201113 yr Aquarium has website: http://www.greaterclevelandaquarium.com/summary.html and is listed also on the Nautica Entertainment district website: http://www.nauticaflats.com/venues/a/Greater-Cleveland-Aquarium . It is still showing a completion date of fall 2011
July 19, 201113 yr It also says in there phase 2 is already being designed and starting to look for/get financing
July 19, 201113 yr Is the 70,000 sf for just phase 1 or is that for both phases? If just for phase 1, how big will phase 2 be?
July 20, 201113 yr I was down there last weekend doing some work on the condo I own there and visually, it doesn't look like much is happening. There were construction vehicles in the parking lot, but that was about it.
July 27, 201113 yr http://www.greaterclevelandaquarium.com/construction-photos.html construction photos from the interior work.
July 27, 201113 yr They are using this new material, it's pretty cool. There is more about it here... [/url
July 27, 201113 yr From what I can see, it looks like those photos are all of the area where the "tube" will be. I believe people will be walking that winding path and water will fill the majority of that room. Most likely it is in the basement because of the sheer weight of all that water.
July 28, 201113 yr When is this project scheduled to open? I think 2013-2014 will be almost as great a time period for Cleveland with all the new projects coming online similar to how the 1995-1996 (and really the entirety of the early 90s) period was with the addition of new attractions and the rail line. Let's hope that momentum sticks around this time.

Not sure if your 2013-2014 timeline was meant to include both phases. https://www.instagram.com/cle_and_beyond/https://www.instagram.com/jbkaufer/
July 28, 201113 yr How big is this supposed to be? Outside of Shedd in Chicago, most of the aquariums I have been to (Newport/Cincinnati, Denver, Charleston SC, New Orleans) seem to be pretty similar in size and overall quality.
July 28, 201113 yr Cool graphic!!! "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
September 4, 201113 yr updated construction photos for august and september http://www.greaterclevelandaquarium.com/construction-photos.html
September 6, 201113 yr I'm going to hazard a guess that the projected Fall 2011 opening is going to be pushed back, based on what's completed, and what the graphic upthread shows.
September 7, 201113 yr I think I would have to agree with you since they haven't posted job openings yet. Unless they're planning on just hiring people from other aquariums, it will take a while to train all those divers since you have to be AAUS authorized. Not sure where in Cleveland such training is even available, I got mine at the University of Miami :|. I suppose it doesn't matter how soon it opens as long as they don't rush it, since they've out-competed Cleveland Aquarium LLC... at least offer us a comparable product.
September 12, 201113 yr CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Tami Lash Brown, vice president of marketing for Positively Cleveland since 2005, is leaving the tourism bureau to head up the new Greater Cleveland Aquarium in the Powerhouse in the Flats. http://www.cleveland.com/tipoff/index.ssf/2011/09/positively_clevelands_tami_las.html Found this on Cleveland.com, interesting concept to but a tourism bureau expert in charge of an aquarium...

Why? Do we know his background? Managerial Experience? He may have the right stuff to manage the talent that actually runs the aquariums exhibits. It's not unheard of. I myself came to a job not know a thing about the industry I was going into.
September 13, 201113 yr It's not unheard of. I myself came to a job not know a thing about the industry I was going into. I could have a lot of fun with that comment, but I am a nice person on a sunny day in Cleveland. :-D "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

September 14, 201113 yr It's not unheard of. I myself came to a job not know a thing about the industry I was going into. Haha, I wasn't necessarily saying it was a bad thing, just found it interesting. In fact, it seems quite brilliant to put someone with a lot of experience in tourism at the head of a tourist trap... Maybe the aquarium will actually work out! Ont he other hand, I hope they find a good staff with knowledge of aquariums and the animals, because I don't want Cleveland having a "Miami Seaquarium" (aka, terribly run aquarium that puts the owner's pocket before both the guests and the animals)
