November 5, 200915 yr Sorry for the bump but uhh... I just spoke with someone I know associated with The Cleveland Aquarium, or what I like to refer to as the "real aquarium"--and it has been indicated that their project is far from gone, and that in a week or so we should be hearing a major announcement that will in full detail illustrate and demonstrate the scale of their project--and that we will definitely see the major differences between the Jacobs project and theirs. From following the CA project, in my strong opinion, I am very confident that CA's project would do Cleveland proud in the eyes of the whole world when it comes to such attractions--truly world class, and kick ass! That's all I can say right now, but get ready to rock! It's been over a month EC and I'm still ready to rock. I've checked the "real aquarium's" website and nothing new so we need your inside connection. Anything new you can share?
November 5, 200915 yr Yes, but I am still not at complete liberty to say...and if you really knew what Jacob's was up to, you wouldn't like it. I suspect something will break soon in the news. All the ducks need to be aligned properly, however. We need to be patient.
November 5, 200915 yr ^Thanks. Do you have a time frame on the news? BTW, should I still be excited or start getting depressed?

November 7, 200915 yr So, the city has committed millions of dollars for an aquarium in the Powerhouse and it's already looking like it may not happen? That certainly is annoying.
November 7, 200915 yr So, the city has committed millions of dollars for an aquarium in the Powerhouse and it's already looking like it may not happen? That certainly is annoying. WHAT? :wtf:
November 7, 200915 yr Perhaps I was misinterpreting what some of the people here were implying but it looked like they were unsure if this would carry through.
November 7, 200915 yr Jacob's has allegedly threatened to default on a loan if the city did not give them the money to build this aquarium. The difference between the C.A. vision and the Jacob's idea is that C.A. offers an iconic cultural institution and destination, while Jacob's plan is more of a road side attraction. There...that is all I can say and don't quote me on anything. Be patient Cleveland, and you just might get a first class top notch world respected and visited classy and educational attraction.

January 9, 201015 yr Developers float another plan for a Cleveland aquarium -- the third proposal being pitched By James F. McCarty,The Plain Dealer January 08, 2010, 6:01PM CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Add another player to the already crowded field of developers dreaming of bringing a world-class aquarium to Cleveland. The latest entry, Great Lakes Aquarium of Cleveland Inc., wants to build a $100 million aquarium as part of a lakefront development project planned for land now occupied by the Port of Cleveland north of Browns Stadium. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2010/01/developers_float_another_plan.html I personally like the idea of an aquarium at the lakefront much better than one in the Powerhouse, where it's more difficult to access for tourists and would be limited in size. I think the ideal place would be where the coast guard station is currently at (across from the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame) but that would obviously be a little more difficult to build on, so anywhere on the lakefront and close to the north coast harbor is good enough for me.

WOW. Having an aquarium as part of the lakefront development would be great... I guess we'll see. If this developer has to go to the voters for funds, then I hope that he has the money for the campaign against Jacobs, who you can bet will have ammo ready.
January 10, 201015 yr As it says in the article, maybe it's possible a Powerhouse aquarium and a lakefront aquarium to both work. Obviously the Powerhouse aquarium would be smaller, and maybe they could make it more of a local-oriented thing. Fill the Powerhouse Aquarium with all local sea-critters that reside in Erie and the Cuyahoga, and the lakefront aquarium should be the one more on par with the National Aquarium in Baltimore. But if only one can happen, I definitely support a lakefront aquarium over one in the Powerhouse.
January 10, 201015 yr To pay for the aquarium, Hill has proposed combining renewable energy credits with money from corporate investors, plus convincing Cuyahoga County voters to agree to a $12-a-year tax, per home, for 10 years. In return, every homeowner would receive four free tickets to the aquarium or six tax-deductible donations for city school children. He expects the project to generate $100 million a year in tourism for the region http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2010/01/developers_float_another_plan.html These funding methods are quite imaginative. A "renewable energy credit": what the fish is that?
January 11, 201015 yr TWO aquariums? Really? Anyway, I wish Jacobs wouldn't put an aquarium in the Powerhouse. I just love that building the way it is. I say leave the Powerhouse alone and develop that massive parking lot. You could put a whole neighborhood in there. The Powerhouse has cool stuff in it -- restaurants, comedy club, piano bar, reception areas... Develop that parking lot and the Powerhouse will be packed with people! Then go build an aquarium in a new building on the lakefront. Oh well...

January 11, 201015 yr Interesting idea with financing the aquariums. I was at first very hesitant about the 12 year tax on Cuyahoga residents but it might work with free tickets to the aquarium...
January 12, 201015 yr The power house location is simply inappropriate for such a facility---even the "roadside atraction" quality one that Jacob's proposes. The reasons being are those that are not clearly familiar with the mainstream audience.
January 19, 201015 yr Another developer floats a Cleveland aquarium plan By James F. McCarty,The Plain Dealer January 18, 2010, 7:28AM CLEVELAND, Ohio — Add another player to the already crowded field of developers dreaming of bringing a world-class aquarium to Cleveland. The latest entry, Great Lakes Aquarium of Cleveland Inc., wants to build a $70 million aquarium as part of a lakefront development project planned for land now occupied by the Port of Cleveland north of Cleveland Browns Stadium. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2010/01/another_developer_floats_a_cle.html Another proposal?? Jeez. With all this interest in building a downtown aquarium, maybe one will actually be built!
January 19, 201015 yr Huh? Wasn't this already announced by the PD ten days ago? "Developers float another plan for a Cleveland aquarium -- the third proposal being pitched" By James F. McCarty,The Plain Dealer, January 08, 2010 (citation above at Reply #310). The PD article makes it sound like its a new story, that it never wrote about it before.
January 19, 201015 yr Pugu I think your right. At first I saw the article and when I skimmed it I thought there was already another aquarium proposal by another group. But now that I read it again it just looks like the same story. I wonder why they decided to run almost the same story again with a different title.
January 19, 201015 yr I noticed when you posted it last night that you had posted the earlier version and figured you were :drunk: coneybear. Its the same story but the amount changed from $100 million to $70 million. Still the PD ran it as if it was a different story....
January 19, 201015 yr Upon further review I'm with EC on this. Cleveland should not loan anyone $2 million to build a non-competitive asset. Let's do this right.
February 10, 201015 yr Just happened to go to ClevelandAquarium.org tonite for the first time in a while. NICE WORK! I have to say that I want this particular aquarium proposal to work...with or without Jacobs or the latest (third) plan. Seems like they have the right board of trustees and expertise to do it right... GIVE IT A LOOK! http://www.clevelandaquarium.org
February 10, 201015 yr That really is a great website for where we are with it right now. I'm liking the ease to donate as well!
February 11, 201015 yr here's an interesting new aquarium tangent -- hows about one in a skyscraper? :wtf: Deal may bring $100M aquarium to Times Square By ANTON TROIANOVSKI THE WALL STREET JOURNAL/NEWSCORE Last Updated: 5:49 PM, February 10, 2010 New York's Times Square may be getting a new tenant: a seven-story aquarium Jerry Shefsky, a Toronto-based developer, said Wednesday that he has signed a preliminary agreement with the landlord of an office tower on the western edge of Times Square to go forward with the $100 million project. He would install tanks featuring sharks, rays, penguins, otters, and other animals in the bottom floors of the 40-story building, known as 11 Times Square, hoping to attract some of the 35 million people who pass through Manhattan's major crossroads every year......Shefsky's company, Aquarium Developments Corp., also built the Newport Aquarium near Cincinnati, Ohio. I of course look forward to hearing more details about cost and funds available as well as others to determine how plausible this is. This is the aquarium the city and region needs to bolster.

February 11, 201015 yr Now I hope we can all see the difference between the former...and this. Speaks for itself. They are dedicated/passionate people on a mission and will get this done. Let's be patient. We can be proud of this and not eventually embarrassed by hastily made plans that could leave a sour taste in the mouths of the public about an aquarium--as an aquarium is not just an aquarium! Please share the website with everyone you know...any donation helps.
February 11, 201015 yr I LOVE the renderings!! How could the city NOT get behind a project like this? Great stuff!
February 11, 201015 yr Do you guys have a Facebook group set up yet? It's a great way for people to share with others what's going on. Also, can you say anything about the relationship between Cleveland Aquarium and Great Lakes Aquarium?
February 11, 201015 yr Now I hope we can all see the difference between the former...and this. Speaks for itself. Well if your talking about the powerhouse and this idea yes, but the former (being the second one) no. Cleveland Aquarium and Great Lakes Aquarium that is. They both seem similar, as in their passion for building a quality aquarium. So as X mentioned what is the difference/relationship... and why dont they just merge to form one stronger and more likely group?

February 11, 201015 yr Those renderings are friggin' sweet! They remind me of the Urban and Business colleges at Cleveland State. Very nice, though.
February 11, 201015 yr I don't see the resemblance. The aquarium renderings show a very transparent building with lost of sharp angles breaking up the buildings mass. The CSU buildings are Ray Ban reflective and have long swoopy lines.
February 11, 201015 yr I like the location of this proposed aquarium MUCH better, so long as they somehow incorporate the lake. It seems silly to have an aquarium in Cleveland and not use the lake in some manner similar to how Chicago's Shedd Aquarium does. However, I did love the "tunnel" idea for the Powerhouse concept and hope they steal that idea. It gives it that smack of uniqueness that you won't find in other American aquariums, Shedd (the granddaddy of them all) included.
February 11, 201015 yr The original proposals for the lakefront one from the 90's from whatever group (at this point I don't know which is which although I think it may have been the group behind the second recent proposal(E.C.?)) was to incorporate walkthrough acrylic tubes (as if you are walking through the middle of the exhibits). I was really behind that concept and thought it unique. Hopefully that can be Incorporated and hopefully the 2 groups will merge their efforts in order to do this.

February 12, 201015 yr Donations for what? Just curious. There will be a spot on the website for donations for the purpose of getting this going. Their pockets are not endless. Also, I belive there will be a facebook connection.

In addition to the world aquatic ecosystems....The significance/importance of the local ecosystems would be adequately represented and portrayed as never seen and perceived by locals!
February 12, 201015 yr ^bio-hazardly deformed walleye? That's a very good qustion. Well, hopefully we can help educate the public on How and WHY those fish became that way, how these habitats are linked globally and essential to our very own lives.......so that we don't allow it to happen again......and so that we may promote a better stewadship and vision/perception of our local aquatic resources, as more than a human induced toxic waste toilet that produced such fish. Afterall, e only save what we love......and we only love what we know. Awwww---men! :-o
February 12, 201015 yr I don't see the resemblance. The aquarium renderings show a very transparent building with lost of sharp angles breaking up the buildings mass. The CSU buildings are Ray Ban reflective and have long swoopy lines. The atrium reminds me a lot of the center of the business college, especially with the ornamentation being suspended above the open well. Also, the urban college is very horizontal with a tower at one of the corners, just like the aquarium. And the glassiness. Those are the connections that were made in my mind when I saw the renderings.
February 12, 201015 yr I am sure that if the lake is incorporated, it will be in an enclosed/filtered manner that will control the habitat and provide a clean place for the little fishies to swim. I personally don't want to pay to see any deformed fish so I can learn how they got that way and what to do different in the future. Not saying I am not interested in that information or would welcome any such efforts to educate the public.... I just don't want to pay an admission price to recieve it.

February 13, 201015 yr ^^That is not what I meant to imply. Animals/habitats represented will not be deformed, rather the displays would represent habitats as they might have looked before settlement...OR, they will represent high quality habitats. This, because so often we're used to seeing them in their maligned state. By seeing what they should be, we can see them for what they could be.
February 13, 201015 yr Here's the website for Proposal 3...now to be called Rock Harbor Aquarium. http://www.northcoastaquarium.com Not quite as far along...they do have a good summary of local and national government contacts, though. Check out the "Who to Contact" tab. The group also has an active Facebook page entitled the Great Lakes Aquarium of Cleveland. IMO I think that they definitely need to join forces with the ClevelandAquarium.org folks and make one pretty special venue.
