Posted April 13, 201114 yr I heard a guy on the MLB channel say the Indians were winning because of timely hitting, the defense wasn't making mistakes and their starting pitching was strong. OK, aren't those the characteristics of any winning team ? ? ? My theory on why they were winning is that they were scoring more runs than their opponents. Exactly! :-D "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

April 13, 201114 yr Reghi is cool. I also like Bentley and Cherry, even though Bentley says "particular" too much.

Exactly! :-D Is it sad that my first reaction is that I wish that Cleveland sports talk radio was capable of this level of logic???? Oh come on, Regghi and Roda are pretty good, don't you agree? Honestly I think Michael Regghi is one of the biggest dufuses (dufii?) on radio today. How he has a career in radio is beyond me. He takes on this affect with his voice, and bends his diction is a way like an old man trying to 'get jiggy' with his younger audience. His delivery is nothing short of nails on a chalkboard. Plus I have a friend that knows him professionally who tells me he's a total A-hole in person. That's just hearsay, though. Or heresy, depending on if you like him, I suppose.
April 13, 201114 yr LeCharles and Jerod are really the only 2 I can tolerate on WKNR, they seem to have legitimate takes on issues (especially football obviously). I don't mind Rizzo either because I think he can be entertaining but his side kicks get annoying fairly quickly. Reghi and Rhoda get on my nerves like no other as it seems they bring no opinions/logic to an argument/issue that an average fan can't bring. Back on topic...I was really looking forward to attending 1 or 2 Indians games this weekend but the weather may prevent me from doing so.

I don't mind Rizzo either because I think he can be entertaining but his side kicks get annoying fairly quickly. I can't stand LeCharles. Not because his takes are not intelligent, but his style just gets on my nerves and he comes across way too pompous. I pity the fool who dares to not fully, 100% agree with him. Goldhammer has actually kind of grown on me. But there was a LOT of room for that to happen. Fedor, not so much. He has kind of went in the opposite direction as far as my personal opinion of him is concerned. Same as with LeCharles, he just gets obsessed too much with sticking with his guns. Whole shows have been absorbed by his unwillingness to admit he might be wrong. I really am concerned for the state of the Really Big Show if the Browns don't draft AJ Green.
April 13, 201114 yr Oops, looks like I caused a landslide of off topicness. I actually miss Munch during drivetime. Yes, he's annoying and a suck up homer but he worked for me. I loathe the R and R show. Let me rephrase that, he would get annoying after 30 minutes, not 30 seconds. Tribe is off to a good start tonight.
April 16, 201114 yr I was surprised that we didn't have a thread on Cleveland sports talk radio. It's certainly a subject that will generate a lot of discussion, and it's worth a good debate! So here it is....... "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

Plus I have a friend that knows him professionally who tells me he's a total A-hole in person. That's just hearsay, though. Or heresy, depending on if you like him, I suppose. If he's an a-hole in person then I guess he is, but I don't find his on-air persona abrasive. He generally seems more respectful of others than his colleagues do. And I detect at least some irony in that "jiggy" tone. Although this one time, at a CSU basketball game, my buddy noticed that Regghi's intern was working like mad on a computer while Regghi kinda just lounged there, which we thought was funny. He was several sections over and way out of earshot, but he saw us giggling in his direction, and he gave us a pretty foul glare for a while. Nails on chalkboard? Goldhammer. And the worst homer at KNR is Rizzo by a mile. His purpose seems to be making Hammer and Fedor sound brilliant, by balking whenever they state the obvious.
April 16, 201114 yr Goldhammer and Fedor on the same show is redundant. I can't stand The Really Big Show with those two.
April 17, 201114 yr ^^ironic jiggy is worse to me than an attempt to be authentically jiggy Just talk like you normally would please. I miss the BSK. Since Rizzo's show went to 4 hrs I find they don't have enough actual content and they have to rely too much on the manufactured 'hammer and fedor vs the fans' shtick. And it is shtick, I think.
August 29, 201113 yr On my way back from lunch I was just listening to Dennis Manalof and the guy from channel 5 on 92.3 The Fan. Not bad for the first day. I don't know what to do when I am listening and don't want to punch the radio. It's kind of a weird experience.

August 29, 201113 yr ^They need to play more Pearl Jam. Not sure if you are being serious but 92.3 just officially switched to sports talk today.
August 29, 201113 yr ^ lol. I know. I was being a smart@ss :-) ^^ironic jiggy is worse to me than an attempt to be authentically jiggy Just talk like you normally would please. I miss the BSK. Fedor is my cousin. That's the way he is either on the air or off the air. Oy! Honestly, I don't mind the non-homer takes. They just take a topic and go back and forth ad-nauseum now, which I think is largely a result of the 4th hour. They have to stretch out the same show over a longer period. They should just go back to 3 hrs, give Rome his first hour back, and then they could go back to guest hosting his show when he's on vacation.
August 29, 201113 yr I think the thing that bothers me most about Fedor, keeping in mind that I think he has the most intelligent takes on that show, is that he seems to care most about being proven right. For instance, his worst nightmare would be that Phil Taylor turns out to be a stud and Juilo Jones busts. He would much rather Jimmy Clausen excel than Colt McCoy..... especially true since he started the suck for luck thing. He digs his feet in too much with his opinions and because the Browns didn't draft the player he wanted them to take, he wants vindication above team success. He wants the "I told you so" banner before a Super Bowl parade. He also has a tendency to repeat his point over and over and over. his AJ Green take got REALLY old leading up to the draft.
August 29, 201113 yr I'm not able to listen much in the morning. What I can't stand is the old guarld at KNR. Roda and Reghi are the most painful people to listen to. I much prefer the younger talent on that station.
August 29, 201113 yr ^Mostly agree. I do miss Reghi on the Cavs' TV broadcasts, though. Watching him and Austin Carr was like watching two stoned elderly hippie/frat boys with alzheimer's and a decent breadth of basketball knowledge. Very entertaining. Watching Fred McCleod is like having Kmart describe a game to you.

Watching Fred McCleod is like having Kmart describe a game to you. I loved Reghi with the Cavs. I hate him on KNR. Munch bugs me, but I like him when he does Buckeye pregrames, etc. Roda is the "um" king of the world. He's painful and annoying. I'm hoping that the new sports station provides some good competition so that KNR has to improve its drive time slot. I actually really like Goldhammer. The station needed someone who is not a homer. I'd like him better if he didn't hate the Buckeyes once. I also have to give credit to Goldhammer for helping open listeners ears and eyes to urban living. The guy first lived downtown and would talk about how great it was to live there and how stupid everyone else was for living so far out in the burbs. (I cringe everything I hear Roda talking up Medina). Goldhammer now leaves in Tremont and talks about the near west side a lot.
August 29, 201113 yr I like R and R.... especially since Kenny got off his Tim Couch soapbox. The guy I can't stand is Brinda. I also don't like Bentley all that much. He could be really good if he wasn't so sure he was right all the time. He comes off as really pompous. His partner Cherry isn't so bad but could never carry a show by himself. Hammer and Fedor are the two most intelligent IMO but Fedoor gets on my nerves for the reasons stated above and Hammer tries to get under people's skin a little too much. I understand that is his schtick, but no need to go overboard
August 29, 201113 yr I will listen to 92/3 by default. I think WKNR has some of the worst voices in the history of talk radio. Reghi and Roda are arrogant pieces of steaming poop, who really dont know that much about sports. The only reason people listen is to hear the harassment they take from the callers. Its terrible radio. They dont achieve anything but ripping on the callers. I agree about Goldhammer, i like the guy. I think clearly him and Fedor sound more educated on the radio than ANY of the older guys. Fedor and Hammer do need to admit that they are wrong sometimes and it is OK to be wrong. Reghi and Roda refuse to do that as well.
March 12, 201213 yr Tony Grossi has joined the ESPN Cleveland team. Yawn. Browns did not sell the farm for RGIII. 3231's cousin now has a new lease on single subject, non-stop on-air complaining. I expect this to run through 2014 at least. I'm finding myself listening to WKNR less and less. The Really Big Show and 3-deep is about all I can stomach. The afternoon drive show might be the worst in sports talk radio history. They talk about the same subject non-stop all day long - what a sh!tty job the Browns' front office does. It's so bad that they have me listening to Triv on my way home most days. Now if that's not a sign of disapproval, I don't know what is.
March 12, 201213 yr 92.3 (the Fan) is much better than WKNR, which has really gotten tired recently. Baskin & Phelps is my fave show (Phelps gives you a strong Cavs angle which is relief from the year-round Browns draft talk that drives me friggin' nuts in this Town!!), and I like Ken Silverstein and Joe Lull. Much less shouting, more intelligence and diverse sports talk. Plus, listening to clearer FM is much more preferable.

Much less shouting, more diverse sports. Plus, listening to clearer FM is much more preferable. I like having the option now of switching back and forth from KNR and 92.3. I don't care how much I like a show, it's nice to have the option to mix things up. Triv is utterly impossible to listen to. He packed it in ten years ago. I have no opinion on how sports talk sounds AM vs. FM. But with live sporting events the commentators sound way too sterile-studio-overproduced-sounding on FM or Sirius/XM. The atmosphere ie "roar of the crowd" sounds so much better on AM.
March 12, 201213 yr ^Ha! I thought I was weird for thinking that. There's something unwholesome sounding about live sports on FM. I still listen to RBS, but I'm really getting sick of football football football on the radio. Today was really taxing for me. They had the same conversation at least 7 times in the hour I had them on (Colt is not the future / Colt will be ok with the right tools around him / FO failed by not getting RG3/ RG3 price was too high). And repeat. Isn't there some kind of tournament coming up. Don't we have a basketball team, or even (heaven forbid) a baseball team? And yet this morning all I get is draft draft draft.

This repetition is getting old. I often wish the shows would do some more branching out (talk more Tribe, CAVS, MAC, Horizon League, general NFL, etc.) instead of Browns overkill. But then again, maybe the Browns 24-7 is just a part of Cleveland. AJ we just may be in the minority. One consolation, the 24-7 Buckeyes topic of conversation in Columbus is even worse!
March 13, 201213 yr I'm sick of all the Browns talk, too. I do like The Fan in general, though. The Bull and The Fox is a pretty solid show. The only time I'll even consider listening to WKNR is when I know that Goldhammer and/or Fedor won't be on running their mouths.
March 13, 201213 yr Okay, Kiley and Booms just hung up on a caller who wanted to talk Cavs. It seems the only allowable topic of discussion is Browns DRAFT DRAFT DRAFT. I guess I'll be over at NPR for a few days. Bull and Fox is quality. re: KNR I actually like Aaron's opinions half the time. Fedor is much more abrasive in that he cannot deviate from his daily talking points.
March 13, 201213 yr I've never understood the way that football dominates sports talk in this town. To my mind, it makes for a really boring subject. Individual player acquisitions/performances are much more important in baseball and basketball, and more interesting. The draft talk I find completely bewildering. It takes 3 solid drafts to turn around a football team in any meaningful way. The Cavs just changed the course of the franchise with one player, but it almost seems like the stations have forbidden any talk about basketball. I think Bill Simmons spends more time talking about the Cavs than the local stations do.
March 13, 201213 yr I think Goldhammer is refreshing. I like a lot. There is absolutely no Indians talk. I can't say that I like any of the 92 personalities. I'm also very very glad that Roda and Reghi have been banished to late night. I like 3 Deep. A nice change of pace.
March 13, 201213 yr Triv is utterly impossible to listen to. He packed it in ten years ago. Mike Trivisonno's a dim-witted, misogynistic bigot... other than that, he's cool.

The Cavs just changed the course of the franchise with one player, but it almost seems like the stations have forbidden any talk about basketball. I think Bill Simmons spends more time talking about the Cavs than the local stations do. I hear you. The Cavs are the freshest of the local sports teams (followed somewhat by the Indians), and yet these stations (both KNR and 92.3), shove talk about the woeful Browns down our throat 24/7 (it seems like). I'm forced to listen to WTAM to get any semblance of Cavs talk since they carry the doggone team -- the station's generally a waste, though; Andre Knott is the only bright light there imho (to hell with right-wing Bob Frantz). I know this is Browns town, but I also know that are a lot of people who follow and want to talk about the Cavs -- they're a damn good story, plucky, promising and upbeat, after they (and us) were kicked in the teeth by you-know-who.... Heck, they're hardly even talking March Madness while still boring us with Browns draft. I've largely tuned out of local sports talk -- at least until after the NFL draft; I listen to NPR (WCPN) for my talk radio fix these days.
March 13, 201213 yr ^NPR usually depresses me too much when I'm getting ready to face a work day, so that's generally out for me. The sports talk is too boring, and all of the rock/pop stations have unlistenable personalities. I usually just pray that one of the college stations isn't playing Icelandic drone music and roll with that.
March 13, 201213 yr Hammer has really grown on me. He annoyed the sh!t out of me at first, but I actually like him now. Perhaps my opinion changed when him and Fedor were on the air together and it provided some perspective. Fedor just makes my ears hurt now. He can literally talk about, not only the same subject, but the same focal point of a single subject, for weeks on end. His tunnel vision and refusal to consider other options besides his specific preference is unbearable. Triv is utterly impossible to listen to. He packed it in ten years ago. Mike Trivisonno's a dim-witted, misogynistic bigot... other than that, he's cool. At least he admits it! (maybe not in those exact words). But, I regret bringing him up because this is off-topic. Triv stopped talking about sports near the end of 2008..... I have no idea why ;)
March 13, 201213 yr I think Bill Simmons spends more time talking about the Cavs than the local stations do. Really? I'm a little surprised at that. I don't read his work regularly...what's he got to say about the Cavaliers?
March 14, 201213 yr ^He has a radio show which you can pick up over the internet A podcast? I don't want to listen to the whole thing, I'm just curious as to how he feels about the Cavaliers. I just find it odd that a national guy/serious Boston homer spends time talking about the Cavaliers. Getting back to local talk radio...today was the first day of free agency for the NFL and the fact that the Browns didn't do anything right away has been the talk of 92.3 this afternoon/evening.
March 14, 201213 yr ^I was being somewhat facetious. He does write about/discuss Kyrie fairly often. I was more trying to illustrate the utter paucity of Cavs coverage to be found on local outlets.
March 14, 201213 yr If you ignore everything Simmons says associated with LA, NYC, Boston, and Miami I'd say that it would be a fairly accurate statement. He makes a lot of jokes using Cleveland teams/players that aren't the typical bashing stuff. If he weren't such a big market crusader (Pitch any scheme that would benefit those city's sports teams exclusively at the expense of the rest of the country he'd be for it) I'd pay more attention to him.
March 14, 201213 yr I like Aaron Goldhammer. He's young, smart, fresh and a non-Clevelander-- the last he uses to needle locals, and I love it. We're so parochial sometimes, and Hammer addresses the audience with such titles as "Browns Fan" or "Cavs Fan" to collectively stick it in our faces. He mixes things up and that's a good thing. And I'm glad he's gradually breaking free/coming out of the shadow of Tony Rizzo, who is all the things negative, to me anyway: old, tired, stick-in-the mud, politically conservative (he often mocks Hammer with the old: "You Liberals..." rant),West Side suburbanite (Strongsville), homer. I also like the fact Hammer's a city guy living-wise (downtown, Tremont) and actually/usually frequents the East Side for his entertainment: while old tired farst like Greg Brinda and Rizzo BRAG at how the East Side is like a foreign country to them (and notice how the bulk of their remotes are on the West Side, usually in burbs like Westlake, Medina, etc.).
July 14, 201311 yr Everyone says there's low risk. That is until he actually is officially hurt, and the morning jackoffs at 92.3, Rizzo, and the PD rile all the Cleveland pinheads up about him actually sitting around in a suit all year. I don't buy that the "well they knew this was a risk going in" conversation becomes the story that is pushed and bought by the aforementioned morons. I used to really like waking up to good sports talk radio, but the brain-dead banter at 92.3 disgusts me. Booms is one of the most ignorant, impatient, childish morons I've ever heard on local radio. He belongs right down there with Triv in terms of people I'm least likely to learn anything from. The only thing I've learned from Booms is how to shut off the clock radio while still half-asleep. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
July 14, 201311 yr Not a fan of Kiley and Booms. However I do like Baskin and Phelps and some of 92.3's younger on-and-off substitute hosts that mostly appear in the evenings (Bormann, Lull, Lima, etc.) can be knowledgeable and entertaining.
July 14, 201311 yr kiley and booms would be better if they didn't talk about sports, honestly. its mildly entertaining when they're trying to be funny, but not when they act as if they have an interesting take on sports. That's what the local scene is missing; somebody who is actually interesting and someone whose take i couldn't have guessed before the segment even begins. nobody is trying to be original and nobody is trying to be funny or smart. Its all what i could have come up with, myself. Cleveland needs somebody like bomani jones or dan lebatard. people who ruffle feathers and are smarter than everyone else.
July 15, 201311 yr I see Chris Fedor was fired this year. I'm only a sporadic listener so I was not aware of that. Any other changes at WKNR? I can only handle sports radio in small doses. Is it just me, or does sports radio feel like someone is just shouting at you non-stop?
July 15, 201311 yr Kiley and Booms, would be better if it was Kiley and "anybody else". I literally just heard a Barkivus Mingo contract watch promo on 92.3. Oy!
July 15, 201311 yr kiley and booms would be better if they didn't talk about sports, honestly. I think they get worse when they talk about non-sports topics. Sports is already over Booms' head. Non-sports issues are over both of their heads. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
July 16, 201311 yr I just wish i didn't have to download podcasts from other cities' radio shows for me to get original, thought provoking sports radio.

Non-sports issues are over both of their heads. Chuck Booms is a bigot; can't stand him. Never listen to the show. Baskin & Phelps are a complete 180; I listen to them whenever I get a chance. Adam the Bull tries too hard to be a poor man's Chris Berman; too loud, too shrill, and he's not that knowledgeable despite the shtick ... Ken Carmam is loud, too, but at least he's funny and pretty knowledgeable .... I like Chris Fedor and am glad he bounced back on 92.3 after his firing at stodgy/tired WKNR.
