April 23, 201114 yr It appears to be a lot of density for density's sake: I see nothing within walking distance except perhaps that mini-mart. I found the TOD in DC to likewise be very lacking and in need of a binding overlay to ensure a decent ratio of residential to commercial spaces within walking distance of the station, whether it's a 1/4 mile or 1/2 mile.
April 23, 201114 yr NorthAndre : Probably the same Developer , Developers tend to keep designs the same for projects of this scale no matter the location. Keith M. : There used to be factories here and warehouses , look on bing maps on the Satilite and then look at Google maps for the recent shot. The plan is to buy out all the low income apartments and tear them down and turn them into what you see at Harbor point. All the warehouses and factories will be bought as we....you can see the process on Google maps. As for the Downtown you'll see its Dense with the exception of a few areas which will be filled in later this decade by Development. Stamford and White Plains are rivals for Office space and housing North of NYC. The pictures below are in walking order , i did do loops around Stamford.... April 23, 201114 yr I didn't think Stamford was all that dense. That place kinda sucked. It was all Dollar Stores and Dunkin Donuts. I remember there being a lot of Mexicans. That's about all I remember of Stamford. Stamford exists for one sole reason: cheap hotels within an hour drive to Manhattan. Ha!
April 23, 201114 yr Excellent photo tours. The views of the older downtown altered my first impression and make Stamford more appealing. While I like looking at the shapes, textures, and colors of the new construction, my tastes run more to dense old big-city downtowns with massive commercial structures and varied, utilitarian retail at street level; at risk of waxing melodramatic, I think that canyon streets capture energy so that it resonates and reverberates and becomes amplified. I feel invigorated in a dense urban street enironment with people going about their daily business, whereas in an wide-open grassy suburban plaza it doesn't matter how many hundreds of people may be present, or what staged activites may be going on, I just don't get that feeling. That's how I respond; I realize that some people find my favored environment unpleasant, unattractive, and even threatening.
April 23, 201114 yr no wonder espn is spending so much time in los angeles these days -- j/k i was actually heading out there this wkend but changed my mind -- great thread!
April 23, 201114 yr Replies.... mrnyc : Haha , thankyou.... :-D Robert Pence : Well this is just Downtown , go a mile north and you'll enter Suburban Stamford which is dense by Suburban standards and walkable. There are bus routes and train stations up in the Suburban part , and a streetcar network is in planning. Stamford is slowly changing for Suburban to Urban block by block. David : That sounds like the suburban part , but there trying to get rid of that part by making mini dense areas outside the core. April 24, 201114 yr Yeah, Stamford actually has some older, established neighborhoods and New England-style density in certain areas versus other newish TOD centers like Arlington and Bethesda (who also have older neighborhoods but not nearly as many as Stamford).
