With many of the Urban Ohio forumers using Macs, I decided to consolidate all "Mac" discussions here.  After all, the Mac seems to have a strong presence in the Urban World.  Unfortunately, none of the Apple stores in Ohio are located in their regions downtown.

It will be interesting if you can dual boot MAC OSX and Windows. Or, if they developed Windows emulation software that is much faster than virtual PC. It would be nice if you are browsing a web site that has a video that can only play in Windows, you open up an emulator, run internet explorer and view it without having to run Virtual PC or look at it on another PC.

I bought the Power PC iMac about a month ago so I am kind of bummed. But, I like to let other poeple buy the first revision and see if there are problems before I buy anything

I have Windows Media Player for Mac OSX and it plays windows files fine through my Firefox.

Microsoft makes a Macintosh version of Office, and other software companies are increasingly making titles for both Mac and Windows.  It would be cool to see the day when Apple would make a Mac that could run Windows as well as Mac OS X, and even Linux.  With the switch to Intel, that day may come.

I do as well.

I am sure that apple will not "officially support" installing windows but there will be instructions up online weeks after the first ones roll out. There are people that install linux on thier iPods, so this should be cake.

I'd love to be able to escape the evil clutches of Microsoft and their piracy paranoia on my AMD-based machines. I like to tweak around with hardware, swapping hard drives and changing memory, etc., and XP doesn't let me do very much without demanding to be re-activated. After a few times it says I'm out of chances, and makes me call an 800 number where i get somebody in India who treats me like King of the Software Pirates before giving me a huge activation key that I have to type in and enter on the spot, without time to write it down.

Problem is, I have a ton of Windows-based software and even if OS-X will eventually run on my system, I'd be faced with the same dilemma that Mac users face; replacing all the application software.

So far, I don't have the knowledge or time to experiment with Linux, so I don't know if I could make my stuff run on a Linux system.

It's not my fault AMD named it "Toledo".  :-D ...I really have no idea why they picked that name. Really bizarre marketing to name a processor after a city in Ohio, but go AMD!

Maybe they named it after a city in Spain. :-D

Oh, and I wouldn't necessarily want to run Windows over OS X; I was just curious as to whether there was a way that I could make the switch and salvage my investment in Office Pro and Photoshop CS2.

It's not really an issue right now; I've gone ahead with construction of a new system with AMD Athlon 64 3700+, 2GB RAM and SATA RAID 0. I didn't want to spring for the extra bucks for dual-core architecture just yet, but this system should hold me for 2 or 3 years, and that's about how often I replace systems.

The 64 bit processor has been out since 1992. The DEC Alpha. It was some amazing stuff at the time. Compaq acquired DEC( Digital Equipment Corporation), fired the designers, and guess who picked those guys right up? Not Intel but AMD.  I have an intel processor in this computer but only because this computer happend to be really cheap and I couldn't resist it. The Intels run extremely hot. Intels don't last as long and AMD outperforms Intel by far when overclocked. The only thing Intel thrives at is marketing schemes. They know that the average consumers only know to look at the number of Ghz however eventually the technology begins to speak for itself. I was just reading about a contract ending with Intel and a computer manufacturer and Intel stock taking a dive... Intel will be knocked onto their ass soon enough.

You are speaking to the choir as I have always bought AMD and wish Apple chose AMD.  Both my Macs are PowerPC but when it comes time to buy a new system you can bet it will be something from Apple with an Intel chip in it.  The less I use Windows the bettter.  As someone who converted to Apple last year, it has been 100% worth it.

SAN FRANCISCO - Apple Computer Inc. on Thursday recalled 1.8 million Sony-built laptop batteries that could overheat and catch fire.

Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple has received nine reports of batteries overheating, including two consumers who received minor burns after handling overheated computers. Apple has also received reports of minor property damage, but no serious injuries have been reported.

Apple's recall comes two weeks after Dell Inc.'s recall of 4.1 million faulty laptop batteries also made by Sony — the largest electronics recall in the Consumer Product Safety Commission's history.

Roger Kay, an analyst with Endpoint Technologies Associates, speaking of Dell's recall called the situation “a nightmare for Sony” but said the recall wasn’t likely to scare manufacturers away from using lithium-ion batteries.

“Well-made lithium-ion batteries are perfectly safe,” he said. “This is a manufacturing problem and not an indictment of lithium-ion technology.”

Apple's recall covers 1.1 million lithium-ion batteries in the 12-inch iBook G4, 12-inch PowerBook G4 and 15-inch PowerBook G4 laptops sold in the United States from October 2003 through August 2006. It also covers an additional 700,000 laptops sold abroad, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

^ Yep I have been dealing with this with my Dell from work.

I got to use the 23" cinema screen for the first time yesterday, that thing is amazing.  But I guess what's bad about it is that it shows every single flaw in a photograph.  It makes me want to chuck my D70 camera, I can't believe how many of my digital photos are *slightly* out of focus and it's all the AF's fault or there's a slight amount of camera shake you can't see from a normal monitor or certainly on the camera's LCD.  They just dropped the price a bit on the cinema screens to $999 for the 23 inch and $699 for the 20 inch.  Now that I've used one I think it's worth it for one if you're doing photography, you can immediately spot and diagnose small equipment and technique problems you wouldn't see otherwise.  And it decisively shows the superiority of older prime lenses over newer zoom lenses.  My $80 50mm smokes my $900 12-24 zoom.  You just plain can't see the difference on laptops and smaller screens.

All the pro software made for G5 and G4 machines will not work on the Intel Core Duo machines.

I figured Mac would have figured out a way to do this, but it just must be impossible. This means that one buying a new Intel Mac would have to re-buy their software (though Apple is offering a huge discount for this right now). This also has me scared that any software updates for G4 and G5  machines could be stagnated. I just got a G5 last summer, and I hope I'm not left behind because Apple is concentrating on the Intel machines now.

C-Dawg, I use a black Mac Book with the Intel Core Duo processor and I haven't had one problem running any type of software on my machine.

I do know that you cannot use the Macromedia Studio Suite MX, so you have to at least have the Studio 8 version to run Dreamweaver, Flash, Fireworks, and Contribute, etc ...

Every other app I have used runs universally allowing the Rosetta to take over. As long as you have enough RAM, you are good with performance.

As of right now I can fully restart in Windows XP Pro, but soon you'll be able to use both OS's simultaneously with "Parallels". I've read that this software will sell for about $75 and run without the problems Virtual PC had. Our Apple Stores will carry the product soon.

Cincy-Rise, Did you sell your old PowerBook?

Yes, the 17-incher was getting to be a little too large for portability. ;)

The way I bought my new Black MacBook (planned out), it cost me about $1,100. Not bad at all!

-Sold my PB for $1,300

-Bought my MacBook for $1,399 (student discount with old MSU student ID ;) ... I know, I know, I'm bad.

-Bought the iPod Nano (2GB)

-Bought the HP Printer

-Sold my iSight camera (the MacBooks have them built in for free)

-Sold the Printer and Nano on eBay & recieved my rebates on the printer and Nano that made them free.

End result = MacBook @ $1,100

^ Huh?

If you sold your PB for $1,300 and bought the MacBook for $1,399 then you should have only paid $99 plus tax.

Okay, I guess the $1,300 for the PB is irrelevant info.

A number of recent reports have claimed that September 12th will bring an Apple media event with iMac updates.

ThinkSecret now reports that Apple's September 12th media event will also introduce a 2nd generation iPod Nano and an updated 5G iPod alongside upgraded iMacs.

According to the rumor site the new iPod nano will feature larger storage capacities as well as multiple colors in a metal finish. Meanwhile, the new full-size iPod will simply sport upgraded capacities at the same price point. ThinkSecret does not expect the long rumored touch-screen video iPod until 2007, but does expect the introduction of the iTunes Movie Store at this event.

I'm stupid, I actually used the 30" screen.  I went to the Macintosh store to look at the various size monitors last week and couldn't believe how tiny the 23" looks next to the 30".  Well I definitely can't afford the 30" and I don't think Dave Ramsey would approve of me splurging on the 23" when it's not much bigger than the 20".

Unless graphic design and photography is your livelihood, I don't see how it's practical to buy a 30 inch screen :-/

I've heard wedding photographers can make several hundreds of thousands of dollars a year though. For something like that, I'd definitely get one. Macs do make good screens compared to other brands. I wonder what manufacturer they use. Sonys are really good as well.

I am computer ignorant, but use Autocad everyday.  Can anyone tell me if you can use Autocad on a Mac?

What do you do? They have Vectorworks and archiCAD

I don't think AutoCAD exists on Mac (yet).

http://www.architosh.com/ is a good site for Mac design/architecture/engineering software

I believe TurboCAD is the Mac equiv.  To use AutoCAD in Mac, you have to run it in Parallels.

Parallels Info

Wow, so Parallels is out now! That's awesome! They are offering a trial version. I'll download it and give you guys some feedback this afternoon!

I've used it... it's good stuff.

Here is a screen shot.

Good points:

Faster than Virtual PC

Run both OS's simultaneously

Full Windows XP control

Bad points:

It does bog down the Mac OS, just a little bit

You have to hit Ctrl+alt to select which OS you want to use

Computer Info:

I am running a 2 GHz Intel Core Duo processor with 1.25 GB DDR2 of ram, with 667MHz system Bus Speed. I will be maxing out my ram to 2 GB's, so this will probably help.

Thanks for posting.  2GB of memory makes sense to run Parallels so you can allocate 1GB of memory per operating system.

On to other news:

Analyst Shaw Wu of American Technology Research claims that the long-rumored Apple cell phone is now a reality with the final pieces in place.

The analyst's report surprisingly provides details of the unreleased product. According to the analyst:

"The design will be an iPod nano-like candy bar form factor and come in three colors (we are not certain of the exact colors but we suspect black, white and platinum, similar to Apple's current color scheme of iPods and Macs)."

The details of the launch and provider partners remain undecided. Meanwhile, a recent Appleinsider report claimed that Steve Jobs had been boasting about Apple's upcoming phone offering to his inner circle.

The cell phone rumors appear to be unreleated to the September 12th Media Event which was confirmed earlier today.

Wow, impressive!

New iMac's came out today with the addition of a 24 inch beauty:

http://www.apple.com/imac/

Dammit, I just bought the 20" not too long ago.

Man I want that quad core they're using in the Mac Pro. It'll be a while before that kind of architecture is feasible in a laptop though and I need a laptop. 4mb L2 Cache...I can't even imagine. Looking at these specs is depresing :[ No wonder my computer is so slow.  My processor is like "dude there was no frickin storage space left in the cpu cache so i'm gonna have to dig around in the ram forever and thats why i'm slow as hell because your cheap ass won't buy better sh*t you cheap bastard".

I like the new IMac design.

I was hoping that they would have offered the 24 inch iMac in Silver or Black but no biggie.  I will probably be replacing my Mac Mini (Power PC) with it in the next 2 months.

I don't like the current Imac design, but then again I really haven't liked any of them.  I am still getting by with my G3 500mhz, 128K ram and 20GB hard drive and Photoshop 6 and no CD burner.  I bought it for $520 when they discontinued them in fall of 2001.  They're going for $25 on Ebay right now.  This fall I'm planning on getting the duo Mac Mini with a 20" cinema screen and keep that going until 2011.

But there isn't much you do like, right Jake? ;)  I was hoping they would be able to remove some of the chin of the iMac but from what I have read, that is where the power supply currently sits and you would have to make the power supply external to get around it.

ab·ste·mi·ous

adj.

a) Sparingly used or consumed: abstemious meals.

b) Restricted to bare necessities: an abstemious way of life.

adj 1: sparing in consumption of especially food and drink; "the pleasures of the table, never of much consequence to one naturally abstemious"- John Galsworthy [ant: gluttonous]

IMacs are engineered for people attracted to shiney objects.

^Sounds like that means they're designed for just about everyone then!  Because honest, who doesn't like shiney things?  Ooo...shiney...

It is... I'm not trying to discredit Apple at all; they are just good at making things visually appealing and it's so effective. With a huge consumer base that has such a limited understanding of computers, needing metaphors like "dual core is like having two engines, this computer has a 4 cylinder whereas this dual core would have 8 cylinders" it's a good idea that you put emphasis on the casing design. I'm not saying Macs are inferior, they're definitey competent in the computer world but we all know the Tiburon and various other cars look a lot faster and more expensive than they really are, and certain people like that idea.

I don't know about you but I can't go into an Apple store without wanting to frickin touch everything. I don't know what kind of composit they use on their casing but jeez...they should make refrigerators and whatever else, out of it.

I agree, except I'd say that superior design is an integral part of the product.  Like with iPods - the elegance and simplicity of the design makes it a superior product to other players...like, I'm trying to say that electronics are not like wine, where a superior label has nothing to do with the quality of the product.  But when the interaction with the product is through its interface, that interface has got to be considered part of its quality...and when a computer is also a piece of furniture, like a lamp or a desk - well, design is also an interal part of the product.

I'm rambling, sorry...

Concurred.

I know I am going to sound like a Mac fanboy and I might be just that but the best thing I love about Mac's is that they just work.  I use one at work connected to Microsoft Exchange and I can see and add a printer easier then I can with my Dell.  After converting to Mac last year, my computing experience is more enjoyable and between work and processing photos, lord knows I spend enough time on them.

I've had just as much trouble with Macs as I have with PC's myself...I've had a few horror story evenings-wasted-with-nonsense episodes with my wife's iBook, I can't download pictures from my camera onto it, we can't use her profile because if the mouse goes over the date and time in the upper right-hand corner the whole thing freezes, occasionally the computer will randomly reboot when it thinks too hard, I can't get an Arabic font installed on it, etc., etc...

I'm sure they're all fixable issues, and I'm definitely no guru with tech issues, but in my experience both PC's and Macs can give you fits trying to get them to work...

Are you sure the Arabic Font you are loading is a Mac font?  If so, did you install it under "Applications/Font Book"?

What type of memory card do you have in your camera?  Any compact flash or secure digital card should work.  If you have problems with the camera via USB, try a card reader that is Mac supported.  They cost around $20.

If her profile is having trouble or is corrupted, simple go into "System Preferences/Accounts" with another admin account and delete her profile and then recreate it, that should fix any of the bugs that you encountered.

Random reboot?  Man I have never even seen that with the 450MHZ G4 I have at work, have you updated your system to 10.4.7?  Maybe there was a bug that was fixed in the latest version.    I know it isn't a virus problem (That is a windows problem) ;)

I plugged my camera into my Dell via USB and I could access the pictures like it was another drive - when I plug it into the iBook, the iBook doesn't even notice.  I could dig into it, figure out another solution, buy another piece of gear - or I could just use my Dell, which is what I do.

Her account is the admin account...I could probably boot to her account, create a new admin account, then use that one to delete her account, then recreate her account, but I just boot into mine and I can surf the net fine.

I said the wrong thing about Arabic - I haven't tried to install the font, it's that when I go to an Arabic webpage, it comes up as blocks.  Try going to http://arabic.cnn.com/ and see if it's Arabic text or mostly blocks for you...I just searched help, figured out how to add Arabic to the list, and then on reopening the Arabic CNN page in a new browser window it displayed the text correctly - so that one's solved!  Still have to figure out how to get it to support right-to-left text in an Arabic font in the keyboard I'm used to, but I'll probably not bother and just type on my Dell...

My point was just that, while all these issues are undoubtedly solvable, so are most of the issues I run into on PC's.  And no doubt, Mac's are more intuitive, and I'm better able to handle PC issues only due to years of familiarity with them - but as a consumer, the appeal of a Mac for me isn't that they're problem-free machines.  They just give me different problems.

Driver conflict or overheated hardware. That's my guess.

Yes I can see the Arabic fonts on my Mac.

The problem with your camera is not related to your Mac, it is related to the manufacturer of the camera.  Of course it "just works" with your Dell, the Camera Manufacturer created drivers for your Dell.  A simple way around it is to buy a Card Reader.  If you are interested, give me the memory type and I will help you find a Mac compatable reader.

I just tried to pay my daughter meal card online and I encountered an "unsupported browser" page because the web developer of that page is stubborn at https://www.mealpayplus.com.  They support Firefox for PC but not for Mac and it isn't that the site wouldn't work with Mac, it is just that they are looking for the Browser string and keeping me out.  Then I noticed at the top that the site is a Microsoft Partner. - Hmm go figure.

Overall I see where you are coming from but I never did say that Mac's were problem free, I simply stated that they just work (for me). I don't want to turn this into a PC vs Mac thread because their are other forums for that but if their is a problem you are having with your Mac, I am sure many of us Mac users would be willing to help you resolve your problem.

EDIT: There is a program called "Image Connect" under "Applications" .  I believe you can set it up to launch when a camera is connected to your Mac.  I am not sure if it will fix your problem but it is worth a try when you get around to it.

Yeah, arguing PC vs Mac is like arguing French vs Italian...both will get the job done, it's just a question of how!

Really, for me the laptop is a web browsing appliance, so I've done enough to get it to work.  I've got a 2G compact flash card for my Canon camera, so I really never need to worry about downloading pictures in mid-trip.  It works great for what I use it for - all I was saying is that "they just work" is probably true for me maybe 90% of the time - just like it's true for me on PC's probably 90% of the time.

Hmm if it is a Canon, it should work.  I believe Canon even ships Mac software on the CD.
