October 5, 200816 yr I have tiger installed and I traded a laptop for the system with everything included. Just need some software now. If I like this enough I might get one with lepard and dual core to replace it.
October 8, 200816 yr Businessweek.com Apple's Brick: A Radical New Laptop? The latest whispers are that Apple will announce a notebook made from a solid brick of aluminum by Arik Hesseldahl When they're not hand-wringing over the recent drop in Apple's share price, Mac enthusiasts have been transfixed lately by the mystery product, code-named "brick," that's due for release later this month.
October 8, 200816 yr I got a MacBook last month. I got $100 for the educator discount and got the "free" iPod. You have to pay for it upfront and then they send you a rebate check if you bother to spend the 5 minutes it takes to enter the number or whatever on the rebate website. It's on Ebay as we speak (that is the photo I took of it above) so combined I should be getting $250 off the new price. Not sure what their motivation was for this promo. Also, anyone can use the student or educator discount. They don't check a thing, they just take off $100.
October 15, 200816 yr Ekk, no wonder you don't like it. A G4 is slower than dirt. I wouldn't take a G4 for free. How much was your laptop that you traded it for worth?
October 15, 200816 yr My G4 is like 4 years old and still rocks socks. Of course I use it write word docs and surf the internets, so really it doesn't have to do too much.
October 16, 200816 yr Ekk, no wonder you don't like it. A G4 is slower than dirt. I wouldn't take a G4 for free. How much was your laptop that you traded it for worth? It was worth $300-$350.
October 18, 200816 yr Rich, don't listen to C-Dawg. G4's and G5's are a waste of money. Don't get either no matter if it is a dual or quad CPU. You can sell your G4 and pretty much get the latest Mac Mini with an Intel Core 2 Duo with much more power. It will also allow you to run Parallels or Vmware Fusion so you can run Linux or Windows on it. In fact the new operating system coming out in the beginning of the year won't even support the Power PC chipset. Snow Leopard is for Intel only.
October 18, 200816 yr Thats probably the route I will take Jayson. G4's are pretty slow when your used to a 2.8 ghz dual core processor.
October 19, 200816 yr I couldn't agree more. That's why I gave my old one to my kids - they were using an almost ten year old 500Mhz Gateway (which I kept up to date, so it was very useable). The G4 is like heaven to them now.
October 19, 200816 yr I am interested in using Bootcamp - mainly just to learn about it and see what it can do - but I have no interest in putting windows in it. Does anyone know if Ubuntu will work on Bootcamp?
November 4, 200816 yr http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=408 This is what I have, and I have 80GB+ of music and other things. Capacity of mine is 250GB.
November 4, 200816 yr Also, I wouldn't say he needs an extremely large internal hard drive if he had a spacious external.
February 22, 200916 yr So I just got my old PowerBook G4 out of its box. It's been over a year since I restored it and I am going to use it again. For you mac users out there, have any of you put Leopard on your older G4 machines? If so, then how well did it work?
February 25, 200916 yr ^ Not so well. Leopard was not designed for the G4. Mine slowed down considerably after the upgrade. Before I handed it down to the offspring, I restored it to the previous version.
August 22, 200915 yr Just finished watching Pirates of Silicone Valley. Great movie if you're interested in the beginnings of Apple and Microsoft..
August 22, 200915 yr Mr. xumelanie and I just got a MacBook Pro. I guess you can say we're converts. :-)
August 23, 200915 yr Apple and the Bengals - two organizations on the cutting edge. Jordan Palmer helps players develop iPhone apps By Joe Kay • The Associated Press • August 22, 2009 Bengals backup quarterback Jordan Palmer spent the offseason working on a business venture with two California friends. Their company develops individualized iPhone applications for athletes, allowing them to connect with fans on the go. They rolled out one for Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez, and expect to have Ochocinco's app approved by Apple and launched before the season starts. "I'm a big advocate of the iPhone," Jordan Palmer said. "I'm all about it. I'm always reading about it and pushing its capabilities and seeing what's coming out next. We looked at the business and what's going on with the applications and the growth. The growth is through the roof. http://news.cincinnati.com/article/20090822/BIZ/908220351/1055/NEWS/Palmer+finds+iPhone+niche
August 30, 200915 yr Anyone get Snow Leopard yet? I had to get my logic board replaced along with the video card, so when I picked up the Mac today, I got Snow Leopard. I love it. So many cool features that I would have never thought of.

January 26, 201015 yr Anyone get Snow Leopard yet? I had to get my logic board replaced along with the video card, so when I picked up the Mac today, I got Snow Leopard. I love it. So many cool features that I would have never thought of. I am running snow leopard at work and it came with my imac for home. One small change that I like, right clicking on a dock item is quicker and has a nicer looking menu. Our computer also included the magic mouse and wireless keyboard (was extremely skeptical about both. I loved the mighty mouse (excuse me... apple mouse), the magic mouse has the cool factor but is not as functional in my opinion. I downloaded a program call MagicPrefs which really really expands what you can do with the magic mouse. We blew threw the first pair of batteries in about 3 weeks, I can see rechargeable batteries in my near future. The bluetooth keyboard looks slick but I miss the number pad and the caps lock light has worked at random. My brother is DYING for Apple to spill their beans.

I have a Macbook and I was waiting for this thing to come out for ever before I bought another laptop. I am very, very, very disappointed. This reminds me of the iPhone. We all know those features will come out later... this is just Apple milking the market. I wonder if it is ATT causing Apple constantly put out this bullshit?

January 28, 201015 yr Oh man! This was good. Someone else pointed out that this version is capable of doing 4 things at one time.
January 28, 201015 yr I am not a mac person by any means. Blame it on bias, performance, stupid commercials, whatever, I just flat out do not like them, PERIOD. I will never buy any of there desktops or notebooks. I heart how windows/linux is set up, to me it is common sense, easy to use, and completely customizable. With that being said, I think I am going to buy one of these. It is kind of perfect as that in between piece of tech. I am never going to use this to type papers or do hard core work on, that is what my laptop/desktop is for. I am not going to carry it everywhere, because that is what my pre is for. By the way, LOOOOVE the palm pre. Though, this is perfect for sitting on the couch and surfing the web (which I loooove to do) and doing simple interweb things. Also, to me reading paper books hurts my eyes, I find it waaaay easier to read a screen. I also want something light and small, not concerned with USB connection or anything else. I think it is pretty cool, even though it is a big iphone. The only other tablet I like out is the IdeaPad U1 hybrid notebook: http://www.slashgear.com/lenovo-ideapad-u1-hybrid-notebooktablet-hands-on-0567892/ Great concept, but seems more like a replacement laptop and starts at around $1,000. To high of a price for me. The ipad at 499.99 is what is selling me and why it can function as in between tech. Sure there are a lot of negatives like no multitasking, but you can jailbreak the touch, and I assume you will be able to on the ipad as well. I will probably be one of the nerds lined up waiting for the doors to open.
January 29, 201015 yr ^ Why not just save $200 for something that'll multi-task, have flash support, has a webcam, USB ports, allow you to use your own browser, have HDMI out, and a physical keyboard .... such as a netbook. Or, better yet the HP Slate? - Long-time Mac user
January 29, 201015 yr It will have flash: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/01/27/AR2010012704222.html See my problem with netbooks is that why not just use my laptop. A smaller version of a laptop is pointless to me. Again, I think the ipad is aimed at one specific use. Those people that just want to play on the internet. The HP slate is nice, but it will be 700-800 dollars. If it was cheaper, they would have said so by now, but I hope I am wrong. My biggest complaint with tablets so far has been the interface. I love windows 7 and all, but it is not user friendly without a mouse of some sort. This is just an easy interface, iphone like or not.
January 29, 201015 yr I like a netbook, but for work purposes. the keyboard, and the constant 3G lets me pull up some research on customers on the fly, and I can interface with my desktop at the office, letting me work while on the road. With more and more information available digitally, I don't need periphery devises like CD drives, etc. I think this is going to boil down to a similar choice between iPhone and Blackberry. There's a place for both, depending on your use and needs. I need a blackberry for work, and you can't beat it from a functionality standpoint, but the iPhone is a fantastic machine that does some incredible things and is a fun personal device.
January 30, 201015 yr It will have flash: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/01/27/AR2010012704222.html See my problem with netbooks is that why not just use my laptop. I love windows 7 and all, but it is not user friendly without a mouse of some sort. This is just an easy interface, iphone like or not. Building and converting apps with Flash is different than a web browser supporting Flash. Everything on the internet uses flash unless you're directed to the mobile version (i.e. Youtube, Bank sites, Netflix, Hulu, eBay, CNN, ESPN, etc.). Something of this nature should easily support Flash, Multi-Tasking, HDMI, camera/webcam, SIM/3G capabilities ... There is no excuse for a lack of these features. This is 2010 and my cell phone already supporting these features is a bitchslap in the face to Apple. When the Slate comes out, we'll compare prices as of now its price-tag justifies the price difference and a $200 Netbook from Microcenter makes it even more ridiculous to purchase one of these. Btw, a Netbook cannot and will not substitute a nice laptop. No question about this. Point is, how can I spend $200 on a Netbook that blows an iPad out of the water?

January 30, 201015 yr Just some thoughts on the ipad. 1. Iphones and ipod touches run without flash, and they still have crazy sales. It would be nice to go to hulu.com or play video games off some website, but think about how much bandwith would be eaten up. 2. Granted it's a dumb name, but I doubt that will affect consumer interest. If you're making this kind of investment, the name isn't a top priority. 3. As I understand it, there are portable keyboards that can be attached to the ipad in addition to small stands. So you can treat it as a conventional laptop to some degree. Also, I'm hoping the electronic keyboard has some kind of vibration response so you can "feel" the keys. 4. It is a TERRIBLE idea not to use electronic ink. Backlight accounts for far too much eye strain, plus the reading experience isn't as "real" as an electronic ink screen i.e. the Kindle. 5. Why would you need a camera? I can understand a webcam being cool, but could you really see yourself taking a picture with that ten inch hardware? 6. That picture of the 4ipods taped together is hilarious. 7. I can't see the appeal of iphone game on the ipad. It's one thing to have an iphone/pod touch that you can play games while on the crapper or on a bus, but if you invest in this machine primarily due to the games, then I'd say you're better off with some of the other portable consoles. No matter how advanced the games, the accelerometer and touchscreen cannot compare to buttons. I've been happy with my iphone for the last few years and the games are cute, but the apple commercials definitely overemphasize the gameplay capabilities, especially with poor controls. Then again, game sales are huge (look at gameloft's numbers) so what do I know? 8. Ibooks will be really interesting and I wonder if it will be the equivalent of itunes. Of course, if the Stanza application is available on the ipad, then you have access to 10s of thousands of free books as it is, which is very appealing since I view the ipad as an electronic book reader first and foremost. 9. Other than the Apple TV, Apple hasn't made a mistake in quite some time. Why should this be any different. especially when most of the jokes are not about the quality but just superficial crap like its name.
January 30, 201015 yr Iphones and ipod touches run without flash, and they still have crazy sales. So does Walmart and McDonalds, but I'm not going to eat or shop there because it's successful. It would be nice to go to hulu.com or play video games off some website, but think about how much bandwith would be eaten up. I know Cincinnati is not the only city in OH to have wifi everywhere. So you can treat it as a conventional laptop to some degree. No. This is nowhere near a conventional laptop. Why would you need a camera? I can understand a webcam being cool, but could you really see yourself taking a picture with that ten inch hardware? Why not? It cost the manufacturer about .75 to put a 1.3MP one in and there's a reason why Skype isn't going away. No matter how advanced the games, the accelerometer and touchscreen cannot compare to buttons. ... which would apply to your #9 as well. Other than the Apple TV, Apple hasn't made a mistake in quite some time. ... the last mistake was made was with the iPad and the one before that was the iPhone. It's time to stop playing director with stuff we own ... or supposedly own.
February 1, 201015 yr My HP notebook that I've been using for about the last four plus years is dying a slow death. It's running pretty slowly and some of the hardware, like my wireless, is starting to fail. I got an iTouch a few weeks ago, and absolutely love it. It's an amazing piece of technology! In lieu of my laptop, I've been using it at home to check email, browse the Web, etc. It just sucks for doing things like work and writing long emails, but it's understandably not really designed for that purpose. So I'm looking into a Macbook Pro to fulfill that need. Unlike Jar3232, I'm frankly tired of dealing with Windows products and how inept they have been for me. I like the idea of an iPad, but it doesn't seem like it can do substantially more than what I can accomplish on my iTouch. And I don't imagine it would be very comfortable laying in bed doing a lot of typing on it (which is how I would typically use it). How would you position it where you can see and type? I think it'd be convenient sitting on a bus in a tight seat reading a book on an iPad instead of popping out a laptop, resting it on your lap and trying to get the screen angle correct. I wouldn't think it would be extremely comfortable laying an iPad flat on a table to type on it and have to sit in a way where you can see it clearly. I wouldn't want to haul a stand around, either. So I guess it depends how you use it that matters most.
February 1, 201015 yr As far as my thoughts on the iPad and the Kindle, I feel that both are a bit unnecessary for me. I already have a notebook computer, and I'd rather not carry that around *and* a reading tool. I don't take long trips for business. I don't need a substitute for carrying ten books, when I rarely carry more than two. I'm down with both tools allowing you to download books to one device. But when are CityBeat, community newsletters, and subscription magazines going to be available electronically? Well, I'm sure I'd get a response about the latter, but the format would most likely resemble a website. I do have friends that fall in love with everything Apple releases, but I'm not in love with this technology just yet. The iPhone, however, was a revolutionary device that upped the ante for mobile phones in the US. Europe and Japan had been years ahead of us. Now, a touch-screen phone with such incredible versatility pushed other companies to do the same. I don't own one, but after I get good use out of my current Motorola, I will definitely consider it. Cincinnati Bell would just have to start carrying the iPhone, so I don't have to switch to a plan that is twice what I currently pay.

February 1, 201015 yr Same price as iPad, but runs circles around it as far as functionality goes: http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/31/8-9-inch-exopc-slate-has-ipad-looks-netbook-internals-windows/
February 1, 201015 yr Well, board you swayed me. I think I have decided against the iPad. After much reading I have come to the conclusion that the iPad is a E-reader first, internet device a very very distant second. :-( I do like the looks of MSI's new tablet, I it runs android and same price point I will be interested to see how that system feels on a larger scale: http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/08/msi-shows-off-10-inch-android-tablet-running-new-tegra-chipset/ Android is an interesting OS. For what it is worth I think WebOS is a better system, minus not having widgets. I think there is going to be a run of tablets on to the market and I am kind of glad about that. They are cool devices. I think laptops are going to more or less replace desktops (minus gamers and hardcore users) and tablets will become the portable device for most people.
February 1, 201015 yr To take a second away from the iPad, my friend just got a regular MacBook and OMG. Those things are so cool. I can't wait until my girlfriend gets one. Sorry, I just had to get that out. They are sweet little computers.

Sorry, I just had to get that out. They are sweet little computers. No doubt about it! My brother has a nice MacBook pro that I have admired over the past year. I talked my wife into the updated iMac and it has been wonderful. I work in the printing industry which has always been dominated by Mac and I have always liked them. We have some Mac Pros with the quad core intel chip and a whopping 16gb of ram, now those are SWEET! I see they have an 8 core chip available now.

Yeah, the MSI one is nice. You hit the nail on the head ... we're going to be seeing these things pop up left and right within the next 12 months and this is going to cause the price to drop dramatically. The iPad just came out and it is so far behind it's ridiculous. It's insane knowing that my N900 is leaps and bounds ahead of the iPad. Hell, most folks smartphones are. If it seems like I am emotionally effected by the iPad, it's because I am. I've been using Macs forever and I've been waiting for a very long time for the iPad to come out, because I was planning on replacing my Macbook with this. I would have never guessed that Apple would come out with nothing more than a large iPhone. WTF are they thinking? They're known for coming out with revolutionary products and this new "advancement" is getting slammed by tech news sites all over the place. Anyone remember the Samsung tablet PC that came out over 2 years ago? Yeah, even that is more advanced than this. We'll see a huge price drop on HP's Slate because of the competition coming out and I'll probably grab one of those.
