Here's the specs for my work computer

Dell 64 bit, 20 GB of RAM Duo Quad Core (8 processors) each 3.2 Ghz.  Running Windows XP

At home:

iMac 2.93 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo  4GB of ram running Mac OS X Version 10.5.8 (I'm upgrading the OS soon)

At both locations I run all Adobe Products, Google Sketchup, 3DS Max, Autocad, and Revit.

I've noticed these programs have performed better at home on my Mac.  I can't recall a time I've ever had any of them crash on my Mac since I've been using this machine for about a year and a half.  I can think of plenty of times, my PC at work has crashed and it's supposed to be about 10 times better, if not thousands of dollars more than my Mac.  While my work machine runs fast, and I've never had viruses, and typically don't surf the internet at work, I still have to put up with regular crashes when such incidents do not occur on my home computer.  I also don't shut down my Mac.  It's just something I've never had a reason to do.  I think the last time I did was April.

I'm not trying to debate anything here.  I'm just putting forward my own personal observations.  I really have no preference over the other.  I look the look of my mac and the fact that I have very few wires and a clean desk...yet still have the power I need.  I'm fine with PC's and maybe even a bit more comfortable with them from a user standpoint, but I don't intend to switch back to them.

They are running Win XP on that machine? :? Even if it's Win XP 64-bit (which was more unstable than the 32-bit) that's like sticking my Grandma behind the wheel of the of Porsche. Looks like the IT dept budget strangled another good computer.

So... new Mac Book air... Discuss.

A netbook that isn't complete toxic junk after two months.

Pretty cool.  I'm probably the last person who would get one, but the new ones seem pretty sweet.  Pretty powerful for what it is and who cares about the flash HD/lack of an optical drive. Almost everything is downloadable nowadays.  I think it's a great update.

Meh. I wouldn't want to sacrifice a lot of performance and functionality just to shave off a little bit of weight and dimension. I never understood netbooks/notebooks. People act like it's so frustrating to carry around a laptop.

Can I just say how much I love the UO moderator graphics?  Hilarious!

I'm with you David, I would prefer the smaller Mac Book Pro.  I just assume that there is a market for them an I am not it.  I heard on the radio that Apple reported 20 billion dollars in profit... yikes.

It must just be the low price point without sacrificing their quality. I hate small screens; I can't get anything done on them. My dad has a netbook and loves it. I asked him why he likes it so much and he's like "it's so portable." I said so is my laptop  :?

I just picked up a netbook today. My first non-apple purchase in nearly 5 years or so.

I really only needed a PC to do some Windows testing and use 1 or 2 web-apps that are pretty IE-specific. I've tried the VMWare/Parallels route and it takes up too much room on my HD on the Macbook and is a memory hog for the one or two quick things I need to use it for.

I picked up this Gateway netbook refurbished at Microcenter (Columbus) for $220:

Not a bad price to keep Windows off my Macbook. ;)

I'm definitely a MacBook Pro kind of guy.  I don't have a use for the Air, but if I did who knows if I would still get it.  It's still a cool concept and the new ones are surprisingly powerful.

I'm in the same boat as you when it comes to Windows use.  Using VM Fusion for a virtual Windows machine is such a pain.

Macbook Pro for me too. I dont like how thin the air is, and I havent seen the new one, but the usb port seemed annoying.

Thats a great price! I just don't get people who buy them and end up getting all this external stuff to attach to it to make it more functional while singing its praises for portability. At that price, they seem like a great buy if you don't plan on using them alot. Everyone I know with a Mac uses their Mac as their primary computer so it's hard for me to see why people would buy the Mac Air.

It's a thing of beauty, as most Apple products are. Yes, there are a few things that I might miss, but for an elegant traveling laptop, I like the solid state drive. Less parts to damage.

Totally agree. I've never liked needing a lot of external devices for any kind of laptop. It's a bit slower to access, but I keep my external hard drives connected to a different computer on my home network so that I can have access wirelessly to external storage and for TimeMachine backup purposes. Otherwise I'd never remember to plug them in to back things up. ;) Ha!

Does anyone have one of the new iMacs? We have year old ones at my college and they are amazing. I can only imagine what the new ones are like with some upgrades.

I have the last version and love it.  But I got pissed at it tonight.  Before I left for dinner with my gf I checked the weather.  Itunes was apparently left running and was playing tv episodes in the background which didn't allow my computer to go into screensaver mode.  The weather channel website burned into my screen!!!  This has happened before, and fortunately for LCD's the damage is never permanent and can be reversed.  You can either leave it be and just let it eventually disappear or change your screesaver to a  blank white screen for a few hours.

They should get this issue worked out though.  It's rare that it would happen, but annoying when it does.

Oh damn that sucks.  Hopefully it corrects itself.  Those iMacs are great though.  I'll probably get one when I graduate and by then they'll be even better.

Yeah well the weather channel is gone, but now I got burn-in of the club I looked up earlier this evening.  Got back and now I have Chicago's Excalibur club ghosted lol.  This time I was copying 940,000 files over to my new hard drive while I was away.  For some reason the screen saver didn't activate.  imacs have some of the best displays out there, but in my opinion they are too sensitive.  Because cheaper monitors aren't as rich, they probably less susceptible to burn in.  In fact my Dell Monitor connected is not quite as vibrant and nice, but iTunes has been displayed on that screen for over 4,000 continuous hours, and there is no persistent image.  I was able to remove the weather channel by displaying a blank white image for 2 hours.  But this is kind of annoying.  This is probably the whole reason why macs display a screensaver only after 10 minutes of inactivity.  The normal range is 30-45 minutes after inactivity for PCs.

If this keeps up maybe it could be a display problem, I mean I've never had this happen before.  The mac is on a 4-year full coverage warranty, so if push comes to shove......

They should program the Dashboard better for weather. I was on my computer when we were supposed to have the tornado of the century. They need a little pop-up that says "Dude, sh!t's hit the fan, it's about that time to find a basement and cover your head. Wind is 75 mph in your neighborhood, the sirens are going off and it's pitch dark to the west". I didn't think anything of it until someone told me a Tornado was possibly brewing.

Most police departments have a notification system that you can sign up for that emails you or texts you on your phone.  Not as fancy as what you are thinking, but it's possible someone could create it in the future.

I'm fortunate to live about a quarter mile, line-of-sight across open parkland, from one of the sirens atop a tall industrial powerhouse building. It's like the WWII air-raid sirens, and may even be one; that factory was built in 1942 by the DOD for GE to manufacture aircraft turbo-superchargers. The sound is loud enough to wake me if I'm sleeping. Those things spook me badly; I'm OK with the test at noon on the first Wednesday of each month, but the sustained blast of an alert makes my anxiety and heart rate go up and I want to break and run for cover. Maybe it comes from the newsreels and drills and blackouts during WWII when I was a little kid, and the war movies that came out afterward.

In the safest part of my basement I keep a radio with fresh batteries, a Coleman lantern ready to light, and a gallon of drinking water. When the sirens go off, I stop whatever I'm doing and go there.

So now that my screen issue is resolved, I need to go to the apple store for something else.  I'm looking to get the new iTouch.  I really like the one I have now but it's second generation, and I like that the new ones have video and photo capabilities.  I also need more hard drive space on it since my current 8 GB one is filled.  The condition is practically like new, despite that it has over 3000 hours of usage.  There have been no software/hardware issues since I got it over a year and a half ago, not a single scratch since it's been inside a case, and I still have the never used charging dock for it.  The only thing it lacks are headphones, which IMO should never be resold.  How much do you think I could get if I sell my current itouch?

probably $75-100 bucks.

I have the first generation iTouch, I also have an iPad, but I think the iPad is too big to carry around.  I use it only to listen to music, watch movies and video when I travel and play games.

The new iTouch is nice, but have you looked at the Samsung tab?

I'm thinking of getting the ITouch for my wife. She wanted an iPad originally but thinks it's too bulky to carry around. The iTouch should give her most of that functionality but small enough to put in her purse (along with half of the house.....)

Someone in my database class just got a brand new iPod Touch and oh my god are they thin.  They are very nice.

Too big.  Really I'm just looking for something to put in my pocket since I do listen to music on it while I bike.  I can't put the Samsung tab in my pocket.  But it does seem about the right size if the ipad is too bulky for people.  Props for the SD card slot.

Haven't looked at it. Apple's ease of use out of the box is a selling point for her. I'll check it out.

Its a Verizon and Sprint now.

My wife loved hers until she got it stolen at work (stupid restaurant people, they left her crappy texting motorola phone)....Although her functionality mostly consisted of facebook, Scrabble and "Words w/Friends". I do believe that she did use a checkbook app on it. I have played with the ipad and it is just too big to easily slip in and out of your purse/pocke. It would rock to have one at home.

This is the reason I like the samsung tab. Small enough that it's easily mobile, but big enough for all your apps/games/video.

In addition it has dual cameras.  It's a larger version of the HTC Evo.  I've been playing with it and for the apps I like it fits my needs.  Some of the games I played seem like they need to be optimized for the larger screen but I think there are updates coming shortly.

I looked at the Samsung and like it for me, althought the price is too high IMO. When they can get it down to the same price as a netbook, or close to that point, I'll think about pulling the trigger.

I'm liking the idea of buying a Wifi device coupled with a mobile hotspot card. Then I can use that capability for any wifi items I have. I'm not limited to one plan for one item.

The iPad seems like just too much of an entertainment device not good for much else.  Especially if one already has a smart phone.  I want something that can at least do simple documenting tasks.  So this seems perfect.  http://www.cnn.com/2010/TECH/gaming.gadgets/11/16/dell.hybrid.tablet.mashable/index.html

Really interested to see what all the features will be, but like the physical keyboard.  It is not that much fun to type our a long email, or take minutes at meetings on the virtual keypad.

I wish they'd make a device like the Duo that runs Android.  Android is much better for smaller touch-screen devices than Windows.  I do like the physical keyboard.

I am particularly excited about the Notion Ink Adam, which should be released in a few weeks.  It also has USB ports, so a keyboard may be attached (which may be even better than having one on there all the time, even when you don't need it, making the device heavier and thicker).

^ Not to sound condescending, but I'm surprised you know about the Notion Ink Adam!

... such a rare jewel. Definitely not mainstream, but there's no argument it's going to be one of the best of its kind.

Do you follow the blog?

Its a Verizon and Sprint now.

First it was with TMO, then VZW, At&t, Sprint and Metro PCS. TMO was able to snag the Galaxy S phone first two with a 16GB HD (when others were 2GB), so there must be a special relationship there.

Personally, I don't like the Samsung Tab, nor the iPad because IMO - 10" is as low as I wanna go. Hell, any smaller and we're nearing my MyTouch 4G's size.

All of these tablets coming on board I'm still surprised the iPad is doing well? The video calling is pretty slick on this MyTouch, not sure why a tablet shouldn't have this as well ... especially with Fring. With this processor 1Ghz Snapdragon (Scorpion) and the included RAM - this phone BREEZES through Flash ... even better than my Netbook.

Here are some tablets that I've been keeping an eye on:

ExoPC

Notion Ink Adam

MSI has a sweet one they're working on

Lenovo is working on another great one

Cisco

Asus

Gemtek Moorestown

Yegatech

SEXY!!! ... About midway you see the 10" version. I'm loving that keyboard dock!

ASUS Eee Pad tablet hands-on at Computex 2010

... This in my opinion is the best Tablet OS I've seen so far ... What'd you guys think?

Alright, so I've had my imac for 20 months.  I figured what might be a good idea is to run a Virus Scan

I took all night to run scanning millions of files across my Mac as well as external hard drives

How many were found on my iMac?  0, zero viruses, none.  I never really bought into the "Mac's don't really get viruses"  but I do now.  At least there's not really many out there, and your chances of getting one are incredibly rare.

I had a very old hard drive connected that had an image of my old PC laptop.  It found viruses on that (of course).  The software was having trouble deleting them though because of their nature be on external hard drive.  So I dealt with the problem manually.  I took the old hard drive and threw it in the trash.  It was my way of saying, I'm never going back.

The only thing Virus Protection will do on a Mac is slow down your computer!

Relatively speaking you're more likely to get a virus on a Mac today than any other time before, and each and every day the risk is rising due to the strong performance of Apple.  Maybe it's not enough to justify running an anti-virus program but thinking you're immune is likely to result in heartbreak eventually.

I love the end of Pirates of Silicon Valley.

Steve Jobs: "We're better than you are!"

Bill Gates: "You don't get it, Steve! That....doesn't matter!!"

Mac's have way too small a portion of the market share, not to mention basically none of the market share in the professional world.  There's no incentive for anyone to make a virus for them, yet.  If they keep getting more and more popular, tough, there will be plenty of spyware and viruses out there for them.  It's not that they are inherently safer at all, it's just that not enough people have them.

Your chances of getting a virus on a Mac are much smaller than your chances of getting a virus on a PC loaded with Norton or MacAfee. Have fun paying 2.99 a minute when sh!t hits the fan and you get redirected to the Indian call center.

What do you mean by the "professional" world?

Microsoft has 86% of the market but shrank from 92% in '08

Brand loyalty. I don't think Apple will ever get much more of the market share, at least not in terms of operating systems and computers.

I'm not sure about that.  Look at android.

Nothing is ever 100% certain.

Apple products are user friendly and the beginning the commands were different now they emulate windows commands.  I see the gap getting smaller.

I wish I could find the information i have consumer vs. corporate spending.

Consumers over the last 6 years on the consumer side apple is winning.  Corporate side microsoft controls but it's slipping.monopoly on brands.

I am a Mac user/lover, but nowadays the hardware isn't any different than their PC counterparts. My dad just bought a new HP and it's got the dual-core i7 processor that you can get on a MacBook Pro, same graphics card, and he's got 2 500 gig hard drives. I think what you're really getting in a Mac is the out-of-the-box usability, creative-minded software and most importantly, the OS. OSX Snow Leopard is amazing. I love Windows 7, but I'll always favor OSX. Plus the build quality on the new unibody construction and internal layout is amazing. The new MBP's seem a lot sturdier than my dad's new HP notebook. Plus, like MTS stated, the customer service, although expensive but worth it, is superb. I like how Apple designs their products with designers in mind. Yeah they look trendy, but they seem like a standard piece of equipment in the studio, and they just seem a lot more user-friendly to an artist/designer than a PC would. But that's just my opinion.

I'm not sure about that. Look at android.

I can DEFINITELY see Android go very far in the next couple years.
