I believe the models for at least the last few years restrict the RAM to being considered the only "user serviceable" parts inside the unit itself.

LOL, that's nuts if it's true.

You should consult the user manual/materials relevant to your specific model.  The user serviceability has varied over time with the evolution of the product.  I believe the models for at least the last few years restrict the RAM to being considered the only "user serviceable" parts inside the unit itself.  Opening the unit will not void your warranty but replacing the HDD might.

Agreed!

It's the trade-off you make for giving up a standards compliant box.  It's the trade off you make whenever you push form up against function.  You should really just be thankful that Apple hasn't locked the whole damn thing down with pentalobe screws (yet).

I did a little cursory digging and was reminded why the HDD is not user replaceable.  In the more recent designs you can only access the HDD by removing the LCD panel and that requires a suction cup tool to do properly.

I have the suction cup mechanism that should work okay.  I bought it awhile back since I live in a highrise and need to lift the glass out and into the apartment for cleaning.

Okay, I read the documents and I should distinguish between Apple Warranty and Apple Care

While under warranty, you may not remove the LCD panel to replace parts.  Since one year has passed, I'm free to open up the computer since the warranty no longer applies.

However, I still have Apple Care.  Under such, I may open my computer.  All original components are covered.  However the new hard drive I install is not covered since it's not an original component.  I will be replacing my existing WD 500 GB drive with a 2 TB one.  I haven't decided what to do with the existing hard drive.  Maybe I'll reformat and see if I can install it in my Desktop at work.  I'm near 3 TB of files at work!!!  I have 3 passport drives on my desk to hold half of that.

When I built my current desktop, I found a nifty gadget -- a hard drive dock that installs in a desktop 5.25-inch external bay just like a DVD burner, and connects to a motherboard SATA port. I can plug any SATA 3.5-inch drive into it and it functions just like an internal drive.

Stop right there.  You obviously don't have a Mac! :)

You're absolutely right, and I'm not even ashamed! :-D

LOL, I don't want to be a part of the great debate.  I use both machines everyday, technically PCs more.  But when I get home, I appreciate the minimalism of macs.  I'm so bombarded everyday by technology it's nice to have an iphone that does it all, and an all in one computer that is powerful enough to render and leave 300 photos open in photoshop.  This hard drive is my only big deal.  Like most people who use computers.  I buy, minimally upgrade, and after 4 years, donate and replace it.

So my dad got my mom an iPad for her birthday and omg. Never really used one before and now I'm hooked. Those things are awesome.

Speaking of drives...

When they first came out I thought they were a vanity device. Something for people that want every tech gadget. Cool concept, but redundant.

Now I have one, and I can't think about how I consumed media on the internet before. It's too painful. Revolutionary.

That's where the internet is going. In the next year or so, more people will be surfing the web on their phones and tablets than on their pc's. Exciting time for me since I'm in school for web design.

The samsung tab 10.1 is much better in my opinion.

This is what I'd get second to the ipad, or equal to it at least.  I tried the samsung galaxy at the mall and liked it, but I couldn't really put one device over the other.  Though I thought the "this device can go to flash websites"comment was kind of unnecessary.  Yes...because it's 2006, right?  Most web designers know flash is well on it's way out.  It would be absolutely silly to do a flash website nowadays.

I have been thinking about getting that over the iPad, but Android has issues.

I love Android, but if I'm going to shell out 500 bucks for a tablet, I'll go with iOS. If I had the cash to get both, I would for developing purposes.

Issues, what issues?

Finally got my iphone 4s at work today!!  Now I just got to transfer over my music and apps.  And go buy a case for it.

^ what phone are you coming from?

^ what phone are you coming from?

An LG phone, but all my apps are on an ipod touch.  the itouch is 60 GB where my new iphone is only 32, so I will continue to use the itouch extensively.  I need to do this icloud thing.  Or will my apps just automatically go over to my iphone???  I just sat down in front of my computer and all of sudden all the devices just started "talking to each other" lol

What about my computer at work?  The itunes library has different music, but the same apple ID

Welcome to the world of android, where weve been doing this for years!  LOL

Here's a couple photos I shot in non-HDR format on my 4s.  The phone does a good job with light balance...actually surprisingly well, very much on par with my Nikon DSLR.  I immediately took them into photoshop for iphone and upped the contrast a bit, and then posted it to flickr.  All while walking a single city block.  Absolutely how much smart phones have improved over the past decade.

I cranked the contrast up to 75 on this one lol

You people and your iPhones.  I love that little park in front of the Park Hyatt.

Yeah, the Photoshop APP tends to be deceiving.  The originals were much more balanced.  But then again, I always tend to oversaturate my photos a bit.  That park now has bright artificial lighting at night with TopShop/TopMan's blazing bright facade that replaced the old Borders.

That video was funny, but where were there digs at Google? ???

I wrote digs but meant references.  Sorry

I didn't even notice any Google references.

Lawd.

  • Search for flower shops
  • Google anger mgmt
  • Searching for place to hide

How is saying "Do you want me to search for flower shops nearby?" a Google reference?  The map could be, although they showed a generic map and never mentioned Google.  The only one I see is the "Google Anger Management".  Either way, I think it was completely irrelevant to the gist of the video.  I was expecting to see a video slamming (or praising) Google from your comment.

That's the way Siri works, it queries search engines like Google and Wolfram Alpha.  These aren't really digs at Google. By the way, a lot of the fun things that Siri does come from Wolfram Alpha just very few people know that it exists or really how to use it.

"search" on a mobile phone pretty much translate into "Google search".  More of an insider/industry thing.

As said to Jam, I meant "references" not digs.  I've updated my original post.  Trust me I'm an android fan.

That's not an insider thing, that's common knowledge.  And that's exactly why I don't even consider it a Google reference.  It was just coincidental that a feature of Siri used in the joke also happened to use a well-known Google feature.  It was almost unavoidable to make the joke without it.

Trust me I'm an android fan.

Well at least you have some redeeming quality. :)

My apologies, I got distracted mid response and came back later without checking up *Rick Perry Oops*

... and by distracted I mean I had to actually do some work for a change.

Welcome to the club!

If you mean the Apple club, I have been using Macs since 2005. But this is my first apple desktop and this thing is unbelievable. Along with being so used to a laptop for all these years, it's definitely a big change for me.

I mean the 27" club! Lawd.

Hahaha ok. Yeah that's another thing. This thing is HUGEEE. Considering it's sitting where my laptop used to sit, it's big. It dwarfs my 20" cinema display haha.

^^^ Haha yeah.  I remember when I got my 19" monitor in 2004 I thought it was huge.

When I got my 24" iMac in 2009, it dwarfed that.

Eventually I'll be getting a new iMac for the updated hardware.  But it's crazy how this machine still runs like the day I got it.

Yeah this thing is great. I have a feeling I'll be getting a RAM upgrade sometime soon. After using notebooks for 5 years, I cannot believe how cheap ram can be for desktops. I only have 4 gigs so I'll probably upgrade to 8. OWC has a 16 gb kit for 100 bucks so I might bite the bullet and do that. But yeah I have no complaints at all. I got both the magic trackpad and the mouse. The trackpad is perfect for photoshop or anything like that because I don't have to move the physical hardware, which can get annoying. Plus the gestures are awesome. The mouse is cool too.

Needless to say, I am very happy.

I dunno. Me and Apple do not get along. Every time I try to use my wife's macbook I feel like an ex-con that just got paroled after a 30 years stint and is trying to use the ATM to make a collect call.

It's an acquired taste, no doubt. But once you go Mac, there's no turning back...
