I love this! I've never been to Binghamton, but I saw pictures about five years ago, maybe on SSP. I've got to go there. You took some great shots, with some great angles. What is that building in the fifth shot from the bottom? I think it's one of the most beautiful buildings in America.

Looks like with a little improvement it could be a nice city , hopefully the Train line to NYC with spark that.

Thanks for sharing. Those are excellent pictures, and the shots and angles really capture the personality of the town. I've never been to Binghamton, but I know it's not a big town, only about 40K people if I'm not mistaken. However, with the layout, architecture, and density of many of the buildings, Binghamton easily looks like a town of 80-100K from the pics. I love how many northeastern cities feel larger than they actually are, although many WERE considerably larger at one point in time.

Yeah, the population is just over 40k in a metro of 250k. I wouldn't say the town is thriving by anymeans, but seemed to offer more and had a decent amount of activity when compared to Ohio's second tier cities - Lorain, Elyria, Springfield, Hamilton, ect. The building stock was an awesome surprise, even if run down.

 

Wow great tour and great looking city. I have only seen Binghamton from the NY17/I-81 interchange so this was a real treat to me. With a little TLC, this city could be absolutely gorgeous all the way through.

Lots of great architecture Binghamton boasts.  Handsome city.

The city benefits from having one of the higher esteemed SUNY schools housed there (my brother went there). That said, Binghamton faces a lot of the same problems many other central NY cities face : their underlying industry is gone, and they're just plodding along, trying to survive. I think IBM still has some presence there (IBM was conceived in the area, as I remember it).

 

So....watch out, Utica!

Revisiting this thread brought the Greyhound station to my attention again. That building kicks butt! I've seen a few of the standard blue tiled Art Deco ones (Fort Wayne had one), but never before a Deco limestone one. Classic!

Looks like a PA mountain city, but in New York State.  They even have a Boscovs downtown, like Scranton. 

 

And they have something Dayton doesn't have, a locally-owned bookstore, apparently....that River Read Books place...

That means its sort of in the Huntington/Ashland size range.  What was the big industry there, or why did the place grow?  On the map it's in the middle of nowhere.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Binghamton has a state university. It also had a nice little tech industry for a while. As I mentioned above, IBM was founded in Endicott, which is just to the west of Binghamton. The city had a number of technology firms, like Lockheed Martin, BAE, etc. that had operations there. A lot of that has moved south completely, or downsized. Now SUNY Binghamton (which is one of the better schools academically in the SUNY system) is really the anchor for the city.

i wouldnt say it has more to do than similar ohio cities at least as far as recreation options, its about the same.

 

oh yeah i almost forgot - they like their spiedies, i hope you got to try one while you were there.
