Wow, wow, wow. State Route 13 definitely doesn't do that town any justice at all. Beautiful area! Thanks for this.

Beautiful thread, Marc. I knew Ithaca only by reputation, and it exceeds my expectations. Excellent photos, lots of people, lots of life.

My fiance went to college at Ithaca, she's been waiting to take me for years now but we've never had the chance. This year we're making the time at the end of July. I'll have to show her these pictures, she'd probably love them.

An iconic American college town.

Wow, Ithaca looks so, so... beautiful and vibrant with all the student life.

Great photos... I love Ithaca. I had the pleasure of spending a couple days there in 2005 when I was seriously considering Cornell for grad school, but you obviously saw much more of the city than I did.

^

Funny thing is, I was only there for 5 hours!

Where did you end up going? Cornell is a good school (In the Architecture and Planning fields anyway)!

Wow! Another place I need to visit.

thanks, what a spectacular setting. But as an aside, if you ever meet someone who went to Cornell try and cut your conversation short. They'll spend hours telling you how fabulous it is, and how fabulous he/she and everyone who goes there is. We get it, it's Ivy League. I suppose as a retort you can point out to them it's not one of the top Ivies

God I miss college. And, I miss upstate NY. Beautiful photos.

I think its actually a land grant college, but after looking at these pix, heck, yeah, Cornell is fabulous.  Take a look at that setting!

I ended up that the University of Cincinnati, albeit several years later.

Cornell is one of eight universities that form the Ivy League (the other seven are Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Princeton, U of Pennsylvania, Brown, and Dartmouth) as well as a private land grant university. Several colleges within Cornell University are state-supported and offer substantial tuition discounts to New York state residents.

"Ithaca is Gorges"

New York State has no shortage of beatiful small towns. I've been to a few but I haven't had the luxury of visiting Ithaca yet. It's certainly on my list of places to visit. A few of the pictures show a slight resemblence to Western North Carolina, although when you combine the historic charm and natural scenery of Ithaca, it blows anything WNC has to offer out the water.

Definitely a beautiful and unique town.

^ I wouldn't sell Asheville so short...

Both beautiful places, but with the gorges/waterfalls right in town and the large lake near by, Ithaca may have the edge geographically. I preferred Asheville as a 'city'.

You probably have a point. I can't make the comparison between the two places since I haven't been to Ithaca, but outside of downtown, Asheville felt kind of bland and unappealing to me (my gf loved it though). I will say however, for a city it's size, Asheville has a very vibrant downtown, and I loved the liberal aura of the immediate area.

Not a bad looking town I guess.

Nice set, and always a pleasure to see the old hometown.  Glad you had nice weather (not always a given in Ithaca).

there is one serious downside that is not being considered with these beautiful shots -- ithaca has brutal and long winters -- ashville not so much - ha!

never been there and this is a longshot question, but did you happen to come across famed physicist richard feyman's house? just curious as ithica and cornell instantly bring him to mind for me. the story goes when he was young and first came to town to teach it was winter and everything was closed, so he had to sleep on a bench in a classroom building -- the students woke him up in the morning. "the great explainer"later opted for the caltech — as he says (in his most hilarious book of all time) 'surely you're joking mr. feynman!' — because a desire to live in a mild climate had firmly fixed itself in his mind while installing tire chains on his car in the middle of a snowstorm in ithaca. funny guy and for some reason i remember all his little stories, but he took a lot of, umm, liberties with undergrads that would get him fired today.

sorry for the little tangent -- great thread!
