If - and that's a big if - a McD's was to go on the site, a traffic study would have to be taken. In there proposal, an access road that would connect to Bliss lane would have been built which would ease traffic onto LSB for BP, Walgreens, as well as any future development on the Alexanders site

Former Alexander's Restaurant building in Euclid demolished

By Chris M. Worrell

Published: Thursday, December 15, 2011

Last week the former Alexander’s Restaurant in downtown Euclid fell before the wrecking ball. According to Roy Larick, Bluestone Heights director and local historian, the tudor revival structure was originally constructed as Smith’s Restaurant in the 1920s.

Frank Pietravoia, community services and economic development director for the city, believes the current owner, Miles Carter, preferred razing the structure to incurring violations and fines for a building that he did not intend to keep.  The director says Alexander’s had once been a popular restaurant, but the site deteriorated after being shuttered several years ago.

So THAT'S where Frank Pietravoia went!

Shame to lose any 1920s architecture. It always has a special place in my heart.

My boss.

I agree. However, that place was lost ten years ago. Been in a sad state of neglect ever since.

I forgot about Smith's!

I do remember when Alexanders was in the corner of Shore Center

Starting today at 9:00 AM, the city will be taking applications from those who wish to open an Internet/Sweepstakes Cafe'.

At 7:30 AM, as I pulled into the parking lot, I saw this line forming at the door... in the rain.

(sorry for the pic quality - it is raining after all)

Great...

Yep, probably a few wanna-be mobsters-in-training in that group!

I don't understand how these places expect to stay in business with the casino scheduled to open so soon.    I guess it brings up the question, do we want these to stay open to cater to lower-end customers with nothing better to do with what little cash they have then to mindlessly play a "game" that's pre-programmed to take their money as soon as they purchase credits?

"lower-end customers"???

Please explain. Have you done the market research?

No.... but you should come to this

Is it cross related to any transportation discussions we have had?

I could not find anything specifically referring to a new Lincoln Electric investment, facility, or any company planning to open a new facility in Euclid. But this MAY be a clue.....

Kenersys plans units in North, South America

By Michael Gonsalves Sep 15 2011 , Pune

Wind turbine manufacturer Kenersys Group (Kalyani Energy Systems), a fully-owned subsidiary of Pune-based $2.5 billion Kalyani group, is expanding its manufacturing footprint in South America and North America.

“We are planning to set up a new manufacturing unit in Brazil this year and one in the US next year,” Kenersys group CEO Paulo Fernando Soares said. He said with the lowest wind power tariff in the world, Brazil will be a big market for the company. At present, the firm has invested $100 million (about Rs 480 crore) in setting up its two world-class manufacturing units in Munster, Germany, and Baramati, India.

Soares said the firm entered American soil by setting up its first giant K100 2.5 MW turbine in Ohio. Lincoln Electric, a designer, developer and manufacturer of welding products, has installed the utility-scale wind turbine at its headquarters in Euclid, Ohio with an investment of $5.9 million. The giant turbine is expected to generate up to 10 per cent of the energy used for Lincoln Electric’s main plant and save up to $500,000 a year in energy costs.

The project, conceived as a partnership between Lincoln Electric, which funded $4.5 million and the Great Lakes Energy Development Task Force the remainder, aims to create a viable market for renewable energy in northeast Ohio. “It is a great breakthrough for us as the turbine in Ohio is one of the largest in the US and America will be a big market,” Soares said.

Lincoln Electric installs wind turbine made by Kenersys Group of Germany

Published: Saturday, June 11, 2011, 5:05 PM    Updated: Friday, June 24, 2011, 1:09 PM

By John Funk, The Plain Dealer

EUCLID, Ohio -- A towering wind turbine rose on Cleveland's horizon last week, a symbol of Ohio's potential future as a center of alternative-energy manufacturing.

...It's the largest wind turbine in Ohio and one of the largest in North America. It was manufactured in Germany by Kenersys Gmbh, a small but growing company that wants to build a factory in the United States.

...The Ohio Department of Development's Strategic Business Investment Division has talked to the company to discuss incentives, said Rob Nichols, spokesman for Gov. John Kasich.

Soares said Michigan's tax credit offer did not mean Kenersys had decided to locate there because taxes are not the issue.

"It's not about tax abatement policies. It's a gut call at the end of the day," he said. "Ohio has offered me something more valuable: A demonstration project is very important, and Lincoln has supplied us with a site."

So is there still news and a press conference?  ( I know Newt was in the area, but that should have been unrelated)

So today's "big" announcement isn't about Kenersys? If so, that's a bummer.

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

It's still on. But not about Kenersys. Unless the ordinance is all code words.

That grant isnt really very big potatoes, so if its just that Techalloy moving operations from Baltimore, it should be about 55 additional jobs, unless theres more to it of course..

Thats good news, most of their wire manufacturing is being done in Mentor.  Techalloy is a good product, and LE should be able to make it grow

EUCLID, Ohio -- Lincoln Electric will spend $40 million to renovate its facility in Euclid, adding 200 jobs over three years and bringing a company here from Baltimore.

In the new plant expansion, Lincoln plans to renovate part of its Euclid works to absorb and expand the Techalloy Co., a 50-employee business it bought for $37.9 million in summer 2010.

The second phase of the Sopko/Stampco wind turbine installation began today. The second of the two turbines is currently being installed. Not nearly as tall as the LE tower, but still pretty massive.

So how many turbines are going to be in that area now?  Is it three?

This will be the fourth one.

^Tri-C?

I was just going to post about this in the wind thread. I saw them setting up the new tower as I was driving home last night. It was good to see the small one on that site spinning too. It has been locked down pretty much since they put it up last year. I imagine they had to get their situation straighten out to put power onto the grid.

I like what the wind turbines are doing for the image of Euclid.  I don't think there's another place in the region with three large wind turbines which 100,000 people pass everyday.

From what I've heard, the main issue regarding the lock as well as the delay in the one currently being erected had to do with power generated being "transported" over a parcel line (in this case the abutting parcel owned by the same family). I believe the state defines this as a utility and then a whole crazy set of regulations kick in. Sopko/Stampco needed to get around that hurtle first.

ODOT is moving their Mayfield Village facility to Euclid. The land purchase was finalized last week. I believe they look to have it open sometime by 2013. The new facilities is to be located at the corner St. Clair and Babbitt Road.

^That lot has been vacant for a while- I wonder what was there before?  And to have ODOT directly next to one of the RTA Park-and-Ride stations is a bit ironic!  LOL but nevertheless good news for Euclid!

Port authority to build highway maintenance complex for ODOT

EUCLID, Ohio -- The Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority will build a highway maintenance complex in Euclid for the Ohio Department of Transportation that will cost up to $5 million and will be sold to ODOT upon completion.

The cooperation between the port authority and ODOT is the result of a state law, which took effect in September, that allows public agencies to engage in design-build projects, said Brent Leslie, the port authority's chief financial officer. The agreement was reached last week.

Sorry for the late reply.  "Market research", I have not personally done it, no.  But I worked for someone who did, who owned space that an operator wanted to lease.  As little respect that I have for actual gambling, I have even less for "sweepstakes" posing as gambling.  An incredibly strange form of entertainment, and the clientele that I saw in my one visit at behest of my boss did not strike me as the kind likely to leave and explore other downtown establishments or make a night out of a trip to the casino.
