Posted June 5, 201114 yr Dreary day, great town Just like Cleveland Brown University Well intergrated downtown mall Just like Dayton
June 5, 201114 yr Nice! Providence gets ragged on a lot, but it's one of my favorite cities. It's a densely populated city with diversity that surprises a lot of people not familiar with Rhode Island, not to mention the cost of living is inexpensive, and it's a skip and a hop away from Boston. Some of the best seafood I've ever eaten was in Providence, along with Baltimore. Btw, how did you enjoy your stay in Providence?
June 5, 201114 yr It's a gem. "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
June 5, 201114 yr I'm blown away. I've seen pics of Providence before, but you really captured a great sense of place in your photos.
June 5, 201114 yr Btw, how did you enjoy your stay in Providence? I really enjoyed Providence. I was in Boston and hopped Amtrak down for an afternoon. The city is extremely walkable and well integrated with the shopping mall, Brown University, and Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). Downtown is packed with great architecture on narrow streets. I am a fan.
June 6, 201114 yr Where are the surface lots? How are people supposed to park there with all those buildings in the way???
June 6, 201114 yr Excellent! Providence has been on my must-see list for a long time, and this thread moved it up a couple of notches. Where are the surface lots? How are people supposed to park there with all those buildings in the way??? That probably explains why there's no one downtown.
June 6, 201114 yr Great tour! The "just like Dayton" building looks pretty interesting. I have really got to make some day trips to Providence. There's no excuse! Where are the surface lots? How are people supposed to park there with all those buildings in the way??? That probably explains why there's no one downtown. In any case, how would they even get there now that one of the highways has been removed from downtown??

The building that is just like Dayton is an aracade, a vacant arcade (just like Dayton's). In reality, Providence does have some surface lots and there is some bad urban renewal, particularily on the South and West sides of downtown, but the core is strong and beautiful.
June 10, 201114 yr Nice! Providence gets ragged on a lot, Wow, why? This place is great! That density downtown reminds me of Cincy a bit, but with those crooked narrow streets. This place looks great
June 10, 201114 yr The building that is just like Dayton is an aracade, a vacant arcade (just like Dayton's). I believe that arcade suffered a pretty devastating fire several years ago which may or may not have something to do with its current level of use, not sure. Providence is great. Seems to have enjoyed a pretty serious building boom downtown over the last few years too, including several large residential buildings. You'd never know Rhode Island was so in the pits economically by the look of its largest city, which is interesting in itself.
June 10, 201114 yr Yeah, Rhode Island isn't exactly a model of economic vibrancy, but Providence is seemingly an exception from all outward appearances. I appreciate the detail and the work that went into their sidewalks. It wouldn't hurt other cities, like Cincinnati, to install and properly maintain their brick and paver sidewalks.
July 7, 201113 yr nice job -- given your threads its a surprise to see you out of ohio. providence is a great place. density its got, but downtown can seem a bit awkward because the interstate highways really did a number on dividing up the city. outside of downtown and brown, federal hill is the perpetually hopping shiznit of little italys and they have an interesting warehouse district too.
