Yeah I get that and I do like that style, but I can also see something more in line with one of the Flats lift bridges in the open position. A lot of exposed steel that would look awesome all lit up. I know MetroParks is planning a 'roundabout' somewhere near the entrance to Edgewater. They might have something planned, idk. Also I could see an entrance like this by the e9th st. pier to 'Voinovich Park'.

Just a quick idea

Good reminder about the progress that’s been made. Thanks Metroparks!

Over the years I've seen a whole lot of confused drivers at the park entrance, including folks turning onto the jogging path. It will be nice to actually see something that's a bit easier for visitors to comprehend lol.

Funny I thought the architectural style is right in line with the original structures at Edge.

Spanish Colonial Revival architecture was popular in the US during the 1910s especially in California and Florida, but the craze made it to Cleveland in the form of Edgewater's old bath house.

Me personally, I would like to see a bridge built in the style of Don's Lighthouse Grille, which is adjacent to the western end of the park...

Good idea.  And while we're at it can you get Don to make the clocktower show the accurate time?    Must have been struck by lighting sometime back in the 1950's....

Cleveland Metroparks to build new Edgewater Beach House with eatery, shop and elevated walkway

CLEVELAND, Ohio – First, they cleaned up the beach. Now the Cleveland Metroparks has moved on to bigger projects at Edgewater Park, which the system took over from the state of Ohio in 2013.

The Metroparks has just announced plans to construct a 12,000 square foot two-story Beach House that will include a fast-casual eatery, a sundries shop and significantly, an elevated walkway from West 76th Street to Edgewater.

"In 2014 Edgewater saw over 1.2 million visitors and in response to the public and as an outcome of our master planning process, we saw a new beach house was desired," says Sean McDermott, chief planning and design officer for the Cleveland Metroparks. "In our striving to bring first class facilities to our park guests, this was identified as a need."

On the first floor, the Beach House will include a shop for souvenirs and beach necessities; new restrooms; new rinsing stations; and a concession stand for ice cream, hot dogs other fast foods.

The renderings don't give much detail, but I'm skeptical about the elevated walkway. Is that really needed? Those are expensive and that money could probably be used to create a kick-ass one of kind playground (one of those cool kinds that pop up in european cities and would attract families from all over the place). But maybe it would be cool and worth the investment..I wonder. Hard to tell from the little that is shown. Still, is it really worth it given the short span from the upper portion of W.76th tunnel? Need more details.

Ive attended several meetings regarding this building and contributed to the feedback the architects requested.  The way the tunnel is orchestrated, you exit the lower portion and the path doglegs east significantly as the elevation goes down..you would then be at ground level maybe the length of a football field away from the beachhouse.  if there is a fork in the road where you exit the tunnel, you could have a direct path and be on the second level of the beach house.  They did not share the renderings of the bridge from the tunnel...but I think it could work.  You can make the argument people should just walk around and then up...that's fine, but the architects clearly saw some opportunity to create something easy for users and hopefully neat to look at.

It is also for handicapped accessibility.  the restaurant will be on the second floor.  The walkway replaces the need for an elevator.  Elevators are not cheap.

Especially at this location. Digging an elevator casing for the hydraulic pole here means keeping the lake out of the casing and/or the surrounding soil. Then there's the freeze-thaw cycle here with the surrounding soil freezing/thawing expanding/shrinking constantly.

That's not entirely true as there are holeless traction elevator options available.

Went to the planning meeting last night

West shoreway/edgewater/Shoppes at Clifton.

Nothing new.  Roundabout will be 1 of the first things done...finished by june 2016 using 1.6 million the state gave them during the handoff.

They are starting now with shoreway construction.  Maintain 2 lanes of traffic during construction.

Lucky's grocery should be started by the end of the year.  The church is coming down....starting any day now.

All I can say, is thank god for the Metroparks.  They know what they are doing, and they are doing it well.

And while Matt Zone is a politician... he at least understands density and urban planning.

Good report, thanks. I agree, the Metroparks taking this over is one of the best things that could have happened. I will take my son there this summer for the first time.

I was actually approached by two metro parks employees while walking my dog the other morning who asked how I was doing and was I enjoying the park.  These weren't guys in khaki's and golf shirts, they were a couple dudes with weedeaters and Metroparks Tshirts, just in the midst of their day cutting grass there.

I thanked them profusely for their work!

Thank god the State of Ohio is out of there.  The park is becoming a major game-changer!

I agree. In two years the Metroparks has come a long way in transforming Edgewater from semi-neglected greenspace into a lakefront destination, and they show no signs of stopping.

Every time there is news of improvements, or comments from people saying that the park looks much better and cleaner than it did two years ago... I'm always half-tempted to forward those articles and comments to a coworker of mine, who back in 2013 said the only thing that will change about Edgewater is the garbage cans will have the Cleveland Metroparks logo on them. How wrong he turned out to be. :D

I'm super excited, partially because it's walking distance from my apartment. I always found OH 2 expressway neglected - the barriers are in pieces, the pavement is fairly rough and the lights are hit and miss - and maybe it's been neglected because there is little reason to spend money to improve it if it's going to be reconstructed into a boulevard.

Probably. Clifton in Cleveland was like the surface of the moon for the last few years for that very reason.

Updates on the Shoreway conversion....

Yesterday, I took my cousins from Philly to Edgewater. It was he first time I had been since the metroparks took over. Wow. What a difference. The water is stilled filled with trash unfortunately but the beach and the park are immaculate. And it was packed and vibrant. My cousins were really impressed, commenting that they liked it way better than the Jersey Shore.

^thats awesome. In due time there will full connections to the neighborhoods too which will enhance the urban park experience even more. It truly is a great piece of green space, glad they were impressed. Can I ask,  where did you see trash in the water? Near the beach? Marina? Rocks?  I may have to ask them some questions on that, shouldn't be there.

It was floating in the water at the beach. a ton of it. Kinda gross

I was there last weekend and was impressed too. There was trash and debris on the dog beach part but the trails and the main beach were very clean and it was also very vibrant.

The beach itself was very clean and there were workers walking around actively picking up anything they found, including the water within a few feet of the beach. The trash I saw floating was most likely not from the beach but had floated in with the tide somehow. Maybe the recent storms has exasperated the problem some

Anytime their are big rains Lake Erie gets that way near the shore.  Unfortunately people are dirty and their garbage and waste get washed out there via streams, rivers and sewers.  Also makes for some dangerous boating!

Don't think there's a Euclid Beach Thread, but I went for the first time in at least a year for Euclid Beach live and the transformation was evident there as well! Aside from the park being packed because of the event, the park was clean, new paths, landscaping and even a new bridge over Euclid Creek had been built. I know there's still issues with the safety of the water there, but I walked away very impressed with the park's condition.

Why don't we have a Euclid Beach thread??

I rode by Edgewater Park on the #55 yesterday and snapped this pic:

What time was that?  I was there from 2-5 and there was easily 3x (probably more) people. We had to walk all the way down to the last lifeguard post to find any space to claim

It was just after noon.

We went again yesterday and I'm happy to report that there was absolutely no trash in the water. Must've been the storms and flooding.

There was an awesome sand castle building contest going on. Some really artistically creative stuff

we went yesterday too. enjoyed it so much we're back here again today.

Yesterday was a perfect day to be at Edgewater. The AIA Cleveland chapter, which I'm part of, had a sandcastle competition and volleyball tournament. It was great to see so many people be out on the beach enjoying it. I got too much sun yesterday, but I don't think that's a bad thing.

I can only imagine how ruthless the comments were from each architect toward the competitors' sand castles. I once participated as a judge for a competition by architecture students designing big-city train stations. I was the only non-architect on the judges' panel. And my fellow panelists were absolutely ruthless in their commentaries -- I felt sorry for the students!

Anyway, back to the park. These were photos shared on Twitter on Friday evening, albeit not of the beach....

I am surprised the beach house hasn't started yet. Back in June they predicted a post Labor Day groundbreaking with a '16 summer completion. Money shouldn't have been the problem as it was coming from the 14 mil from the state sale. Hate to see all this good construction weather go the waste. Anybody hear anything?

I heard that the CM estimating it blew the estimate, so it has caused some delays in order to try to get back to where they need to be.

^Nice...

Is the Edgewater willow the most iconic tree in the city? https://t.co/bsIYjd2PkI

Edgewater is a real asset that sets Cleveland apart from the rest of Ohio. It's one of the only urban beaches on Lake Erie. Most of the good beaches are far away from the big cities, so Cleveland is lucky to have one so close to downtown.

Nope. Can't be. Still standing.

Really looking forward to beach weather this summer.  I feel like the clean up at Edgewater has added a whole new layer of options for my family on the weekends.  Kids are always down for going to the beach and not having to trek all the way out to Headlands makes it much easier for us.

So true, these sentiments are a welcome change. Last year when I saw people bringing kids, blankets and bottles of wine to the beach I was in utter shock. What a transformation.

Anyone know anything about this Cleveland Waterfront District Plan poster: http://planning.city.cleveland.oh.us/lakefront/iactive/poster/waterfront_poster.pdf

I'm guessing its an "idealized Cleveland waterfront", from some point in time in the past. But, does anyone know if that is used sort of as a guiding blueprint, such as how does this next decision work to accomplish this vision? As far as that waterfront poster goes, that's a pretty awesome vision for the lakefront. I do like the "future transit station" markings.

Lastly, I'd say that Edgewater is my favorite Cleveland-area beach by far. Its great for weekend family day at the beach, and Edgewater Live is good when you can bring a crowd and hangout on a blanket. Whenever we've had a friend in town, on a Thursday, its usually our first recommendation for what to do. One recent memory from Edgewater Live is that cavs game 6 was on a Thursday, and they promptly closed down Edgewater Live at 8:30, to let people scatter home to watch the game. Maybe there can be future public screenings of big games / distributed public watch parties. (As opposed to just the gateway plaza).

Also, sometimes I wonder if there's potential for a resort-hotel near Edgewater, for people that want to have a stay-cation, or tourism. Maybe instead of that, building a first-class indoor/outdoor pool + sprayground.

How about a full-scale music festival, like Comfest?  Edgewater seems perfect for that.

The only thing they have to solve is the constant combined sewer overflow issues that closed the beach a lot last year. Considering we haven't had much rain this summer/spring, that hasn't been a problem this year.

That's from Mayor Jane Campbell's Lakefront Plan. I wouldn't call it a guiding blueprint as it had no teeth; it didn't have any force of law supporting it. The Edgewater portion was influenced by a since abandoned idea floated to relocate Port operations to an island.

Basically a lot of time, resources and effort went into that idealized, ambitious, yet toothless proposal.

That's a great idea.
