July 7, 20168 yr Basically a lot of time' date=' resources and effort went into that idealized, ambitious, yet toothless proposal.[/quote'] Its was a great plan. I'd say 99% of proposals/plans are "toothless"---they're just plans. I still favor moving the port to an island and freeing up the land downtown.

July 8, 20168 yr IIRC, it was a Howard Johnson's. I had no idea, so digging further. According to this site, the Howard Johnson's was just a restaurant, and had shops: http://wikimapia.org/1224060/Don-s-Lighthouse-Grille
July 8, 20168 yr Interesting. I always thought that Edgewater would be a great place for a Kalahari type resort. Either there or Nautica.
July 10, 20168 yr A typical Kalahari-sized resort would absolutely dominate Edgewater Park. The hotel space could be compacted, but the building with the pool and water slides would take up a large portion of land. To say nothing about parking, which even a multi-level garage would take up space. Though an outdoor pool and sprayground would be good for the park, IMO. Not everyone wants to swim in the lake, swimming is forbidden for days after a rainfall due to the nearby combined sewer overflow, and the NEORSD isn't making any plans to move it somewhere else. So a permanent swimming area would be perfect.
September 30, 20168 yr Work has begun on a revised Edgewater Beach House. Although still at 14k sq ft the second floor is no longer enclosed in glass, which to me is disappointing. That could have been a great year round event space. But the scope of the 4.3 mil dollar project now includes improvement to the surrounding Parking lot, trails etc. They hope to have it complete for summer 17. http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2016/09/cleveland_metroparks_begins_wo.html#incart_river_home

January 22, 20178 yr Two images I snapped today. Steel beams for the roof have begun to be installed, so structural work is almost done. The base for the pedestrian bridge that will connect the West 76th bike/pedestrian path with the second floor deck of the beach house is also being built.

This could be a really good look for the city. August 2018, that's plenty of time to make sure the place is in top shape. There sure was a lot of garbage on the beach last week. It's a constant issue, I'm afraid. Anyhow I miss seeing the city and the lake on tv for the Cleveland Grand Prix.

Also I should have specified that the vast majority of this trash are plastics from the river, lake and likely storm drains.
April 12, 20178 yr I'm pretty confident that the Metroparks will have it in top shape. By then the beachhouse will be up and running, the roundabout and surrounding parking lots and facilities will also be complete. Not to mention the majority of the shoreway should be complete and open. Should look good. And I agree about the Grand Prix and there are rumors of its return. But I have this crazy idea about running the race not at the airport but on the new Shoreway. Imagine the cars running in that space with Edgewater as the event space. It would be a nice backdrop on TV.

August 14, 20177 yr It has been so much of a hit that it is beginning to impact accessibility. I'm wondering if it's becoming too popular. The traffic is a mess and poorly handled during peak times. Yesterday the trooper was giving the WB entrance preference over the EB entrance and then later they closed off the 73rd and Shoreway EB exits forcing everyone to go Shoreway West to get out.

Yesterday the trooper was giving the WB entrance preference over the EB entrance and then later they closed off the 73rd and Shoreway EB exits forcing everyone to go Shoreway West to get out. This just gave me an idea--what if the Metroparks cut a deal with Edgewater yacht club for a single dock and access through a gate. Then they could run their water taxi service from the Flats, enable people to use the Waterfront Line connecting to the river taxi to the park. Only hangup would be the stupid NS rail bridge at the mouth of the river.

Only hangup would be the stupid NS rail bridge at the mouth of the river. See the freight train Lakefront Bypass thread. Then tell your elected leaders to look at it. :) Of course, I'd love to have the freight trains rerouted inland away from the lakefront entirely has KJP outlined in detail in an article for the local "Greenie" publication nearly 20 years ago... But currently I don't see the Iron Curtain bridge as being a major hang-up for a Metroparks water taxi over to Whiskey Island or Edgewater Park, as well as up the river to, say, Merwin's Warf restaurant. The trains, though frequent and several miles long, at times, only last a few minutes and the then the bridge goes up rather quickly. The Goodtime III and Nautica Queen often have to wait for the bridge, but it isn't that long ... The biggest problem is there needs to be more than one boat. Certain local businesses subsidized the boat ride so it is now free to ride, but if there's no boat to ride... We often get caught up I the concept of a public transportation service being "free" without first focusing on the quality of the service. I'd rather have a comprehensive river taxi service even at cost rather than having a free service, like what we have, that basically useless an effective cross-the-river transportation service especially when there's any kind of crowd and lines. Edgewater Park has become one of the most desirable assets of Cleveland and, really, there's no viable public transportation means of getting to-from there. The water taxi would make sense especially since both Edgewater and the water taxi are now run by Metroparks.
August 15, 20177 yr ^ exactly KJP....as I layed on the beach Sunday and watched trains go by all day long....What would it take to have a station right at the tunnel behind Battery Park?! The traffic on weekends is a nightmare As you may know, GCRTA already has a bus stop on the Cleveland State Line at the bottom of the Shoreway ramps for Edgewater Park, but for Saturday's hourly service only. The Cleveland State Line does not offer Sunday service. But for something more noticeable and less-prone to having buses get caught up in traffic, a station could be built above the new Beach house. This might consist of concrete bus pads with long merge-in lanes, a standardized Cleveland State Line transit waiting environment on each side of the Shoreway, and stairs/ramp to the tunnel under the Shoreway. Might cost about $1 million... csu-brt-batterypk-ohiocitys by Ken Prendergast, on Flickr I did a mock-up of the proposed station at West 50th Street. A proposed Edgewater/West 76th station might be even simpler since no new grade-separated crossing of the West Shoreway is necessary. This is the West 50th station concept.... clevelandstatebrt-west50thstop by Ken Prendergast, on Flickr "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

Cue the obligatory "It's too crowded, nobody goes there...." adage. But i believe you're exactly right. The Park isn't designed to be as popular as it is. It's a good problem, for sure. But one that should by all means be solved. The watered-down Shoreway Blvd. is a big time aesthetic improvement. It's interesting to think about what further proposals (rail, bus, on street parking changes, etc) can lead to better access along the way.
August 15, 20177 yr ^ I immediately noticed people improvising ways to get to Edgewater. The parking along Herman Ave. was always crowded on Thursday nights. Giving them about a mile walk to the park. Additionally, I noticed a lot of people getting dropped off by the Capitol theater and just walking.

We've been driving into Battery Park, parking, and using the tunnels which feed directly into the new EP beach house and the beach. After the beach, there are 3 different restaurants to choose from in Battery Park. We noticed a number of people are parking in BP. Because of the growing housing density in BP -- including the new apt building going up -- along with the growing popularity of Edgewater Park, it's only a matter of time before BP starts restricting parking there... Public transit could/should be more available and accessible besides the CSU/BRT pullout stop KJP noted... Maybe a Tower City to OC/Hingetown to Edgewater Park then Edgewater Neighborhood LRT would be viable (using the old Shaker Tower City station and the Veterans Memorial Bridge subway then the boulevard of the new Shoreway blvd).
August 16, 20177 yr My family and i went there to meet some friends at the marina on Sunday afternoon. While there was a line of cars waiting to get off the exit from Rt 2, it only took us about 15 minutes to get in to the park. I drove around along the beach, and while it certainly was packed, there was still parking that could be found, so it wasn't a nightmare, just a little bit of a hassle. As we were waiting in line on the exit, CPD came down to the intersection to help the flow of traffic and things moved along much better after that. Maybe the city just has to step in and provide assistance regularly. It was a beautiful day, and it was really neat to see the beach so active, with all the foodtrucks, and activity on the park, etc. Very vibrant.
August 16, 20177 yr This has been the best weather possible for water quality at Edgewater too. Not too hot and not much sewer overflow, due to the lack of rain.

May 29, 20196 yr https://www.cleveland.com/news/2019/05/rain-causes-raw-sewage-overflow-at-edgewater-beach.html By Laura Johnston, cleveland.com CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Stay out of the water at Edgewater Beach today, since the heavy rain Tuesday caused an overflow of 142,600 gallons of raw sewage and stormwater. Severe storms hit Cleveland Tuesday evening, pelting the city with more than an inch of rain, according to the National Weather Service. The combined sewer overflow ran into Lake Erie at 8 p.m. Tuesday, according to a news release from Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District. **** My questions: - When the big NEORSD storm sewer tunnel project is complete, will it completely eliminate these events or just minimize them? - When will that project be complete? I'm happy that the overflow events are much less frequent. I'm relieved that the Ohio Supreme Court ruled in favor of NEORSD a couple years back so this project could keep moving. (Wow does it bug me that there are people that think it's OK to just dump raw sewage in the lake.) I'm just anxious for the project to be done so that we can enjoy the full benefit of all the money that is being spent. When is the last time I-71 turned a profit?
May 29, 20196 yr Check out “Project Clean Lake” and they will have the right info. i believe it is something like 97% of all sewage overflows will be eliminated

But we might not get to 97% if the climate change forecasts are correct in calling for more extreme rainfall events than we've seen historically.
May 29, 20196 yr 97% of what? How many gallons or whatever units of raw sewage from sewer overlflow goes into the lake from CLE each year?
May 29, 20196 yr 1 hour ago, Pugu said: 97% of what? How many gallons or whatever units of raw sewage from sewer overlflow goes into the lake from CLE each year? So, the website says “capturing 98% of all combined sewer flows for treatment.” It’s also says CSOs will be reduced to 450 million gallons, which is a 90% reduction of what it was when the project started (2010).
May 30, 20196 yr 1 hour ago, Pugu said: a 90% reduction is great, but 450 million gallons of CSO is still a lot! I made a mistake, it’s actually 494 million. But I agree. The consent decree itself is more complicated, there appears to be specific requirements for each individual outfall location.
