Surf,

Any resolution with the metroparks about surfing when they close the beach due the size of the waves and riptide?

Good reminder about the progress that’s been made. Thanks Metroparks!

Still working on it CBC. One good thing is that surfing is mostly an off season activity here. So when the waves really start up in September/October it should be a non-issue; there won't be any lifeguards or swimming limits. But we've already had some really nice conversations with metroparks and we're off to a positive start. Even despite the headaches, majority of the surfers and SUP'ers are super glad with the changes that are underway.

^ being open minded and willing to have the conversation is something i expect a good organization like the Metroparks to engage in

Surf,  just a thought but you may want to call the Cleveland Sports Commision and bring them into the discussion. See if they have an interest in exploring a possible GreatLakes surfing event that could be held at Edgewater. If the Metroparks can see a revenue opportunity in the future they may be more open to the idea of surfing as more than just recreation.

Great suggestion! Thanks. I will contact them.

p.s. I actually live in San Diego now but much of my heart is still in Cleveland. Edgewater is one the most unique surf spots in America, and it's my passion to see that this tradition is rightly recognized and preserved for future generations.

It's incredible how free the beach is from litter now. Yesterday evening the beach was nearly void of all user garbage, I've never seen it like that before. Perhaps the broken windows theory is working here. The cleaner the beach, the less likely people are going to litter, and when someone does litter, it's removed promptly.

Too bad MetroParks can't also take over the city-owned and controlled portion of Gordon Park.  That place is just a wreck.  Parking lot and roadways are approaching a moon-like, cratered surface.  Baseball diamonds are in beyond poor condition; restrooms are a wreck; just an overall tired, worn appearance.  Not to mention the lack of any sort of security presence.

I spent much of last Saturday at Edgewater and was impressed. It's really beautiful. I walked down to the smaller beach west of the main beach and this area didn't seem to have been cleaned yet. It was covered with driftwood and quite a bit of litter actually... There's a sewer outflow grate there and there was trash in the water by it. Does anyone know the area I'm talking about? Hopefully it's addressed soon because the rest of the park looks AMAZING.

Yeah. That area hasn't been touched yet. There's a ton of driftwood and flotsam over there. I wish they could remove all that and use their beach combs all the way to that side. Hopefully that's in their future plans.

This is the section I always go to and was going to say the same thing. I haven't seen the cleaned up beach because there are way too many people there for my liking.  Even the "beach rangers" do not run their ATV's over to that section of the beach. They go about as far as the sewer grate and turn around.

Careful, that can be considered heresy around here.

Yeah, no one goes there anymore because it's too crowded. Thank you, Yogi Berra.

I am continually amazed at the metroparks (which is a sad commentary on how low the state set the bar). Just drove by and there was a crew out performing maintenance on the chain link fence against the shoreway and they were painting the posts silver. The park keeps looking better and better.

Go to hear.... although chain link fences and the metroparks is a bit of a sore subject for me.  They still haven't taken down that hiddeous barbed wire topped fence around most of Acacia.  I would've thought that would be a top priority.

Alongside the Shoreway, or around a golf course that charges to play?  Both make sense.

^Acacia is no longer a golf course.

The Acacia one should definitely come down, but the Edgewater Park chain link fence needs to stay.  Not because of the Shoreway, but because it's the West Side. :P

thats an awesome picture.

I happened to be walking by the other night during that. There were a lot of photographers. I just assumed it was some sort of promotional shoot. Nonetheless it was very cool to watch and sunset made for a great backdrop.

On a side note, the constant northerly winds the past month have made for some very poor water quality conditions. It was very hard to find a spot at Edgewater that didn't have a lot of muck to wade through.

Cant find the news link yet but a young man was found dead earlier tonight in the upper shelterhouse of Edgewater.  Looks like it might've been a drug overdose.  Very sad scene

Metroparks Ramping up Lakefront Spending, Turning Edgewater into ‘Hub’

Posted by Sam Allard on Wed, Feb 26, 2014 at 1:17 PM

The Cleveland Metroparks has announced that it will spend an estimated $17.6 million over the next three years on improvements and enhancements at the six lakefront parks it acquired from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources last year. New projects costing upwards of $9 million could break ground in 2014.

At Edgewater Park, beyond ongoing sand maintenance and bathroom upkeep — Herculean feats, make no mistake — one of the dramatic proposed enhancements is a revamped parking lot and a reconfigured bike trail connecting the park’s upper and lower levels. The notoriously steep hill will be less steep and closer to the shoreway, in current renderings.

Discussions are also underway, hidden deep within the Metroparks’ board meetings’ audio files, about re-imagining the lower level between the parking lot and the beach. CEO Brian Zimmerman and the profit-hungry board of commissioners naturally intend to include food service in some form. Commissioner Dan T. Moore, the military-helmet-pad magnate, continues to assert that restaurants and alcohol are money-making cure-alls. Zimmerman has been quoted (by Scene) prophesying “cabanas” at Euclid Beach, so there’s no reason not to expect something similar at Edgewater.

I'm really confused at what the writer is getting at. It seems a not-so-very-clever, pretentious cheap shot more than anything else.

Lots of fun going on at the Park recently. On Thursday I stopped by after work. Beer trucks, live music, people with bottles of wine and thousands of people all over. I would've never believed this could be happening at Edgewater.

Cleveland's becoming Biker big city, USA... I think it's great.

2. clvlndr's dream.....BIKER BIG CITY USA

My friend's parents went to Edgewater tonight and said it was slammed with people.  It sounds like their Thursday night events are an instant success.  I'm hoping I can make it there soon.

^ went to both of them and there are lines to get into the park on the Shoreway from E and W.  It's gonna get real screwed up though when they close that Eastbound exit in a few weeks, line is going to be terribly long to get in.

Everyone is really chill and extremely diverse group of people.  It also feels like we are being treated like adults with beer and wine available.

Something that's been missing from Cleveland events for years.    Glad to hear they are bringing it back.

I went last night and was pleasantly surprised that they didn't put us in a cage to drink our beer.  Hopefully they don't have any issues because this is a great event that should draw huge crowds all summer.

That's so awesome.  So overdue in making Edgewater a real hub of activity in the city.  So pleased with the Metroparks progress and what they've done at Edgewater already in terms of cleaning, updating, policing & programming, etc

Here's some cell phone shots from Edgewater yesterday.  It was definitely great to see crowds and a great atmosphere!  Looking forward to going back all summer!

I should add that my friend's parents drove from Strongsville to attend the event.  They aren't the type that steers clear of the city but figured it was worth noting.

Wonderful!!

Quick note to those driving to this event in future weeks- drive and park in battery park and walk down. Easier in and out

It's gotten so much better in just a year.

I wish we could give more city park space to the metroparks.  The City of Cleveland parks and rec doesn't seem to be able to keep up with maintenance.

Can you explain or give greater details on what park/parks and rec centers have poor maintenance or are being (to a degree) mis-managed?  What do you think the Metroparks can or are able to do, that the City cannot?

I think the Metroparks have a better attention to detail and more persistence than the city park workers, but I do like some of the city's recreation centers-- each of which has a go-to person who oversees them. But let's not forget that Edgewater Park was previously run by the state, not by the city (of course, prior to the 1980s, Edgewater was a city park).

That's a city-owned park. See a list of all city-owned parks here:

Exactly.  Cudell Rec is one that comes to mind for me--when I walk through always lots of trash, etc.  The turn around at Edgewater is amazing.    I think part of it is a cultural thing--Metroparks employees are not the type to walk by trash just because their job description is grass-cutting.  City employees, on the other hand, tend to stay in their designated lanes (and drive very slow).

Aside from any differences in management and personnel quality (which I know nothing about), Metroparks has the advantage of a secure, predictable funding source while the city parks (I assume) are funded out of the city's general budget.
