Hahaha .. I thought that was a parking garage. It does look really nice, though. They had some really great shots in that video! I'm excited. And it's great that Harry Smith sounded a bit hoarse. :)

Great piece. Meanwhile, I stopped by the CVB's new Visitors Center the other day, and I love it. Nice centralized place for Cleveland brochures, computer stations for looking up additional info on attractions and my favorite ... a large wall with several tongue-in-cheek write-ups about Cleveland's negatives ... the burning river, the winter and the "full Cleveland" look. Each takes the negative and spins it into a positive (spawning a national environmental movement, a local attention to a green economy and a great beer; four-season weather cycle; and a place where people can be who they want to be and wear what they want to wear). Very nice, I must say.

  • 2 weeks later...

this is funny that an article in today's PD was realeased in February! The PD needs a complete overhaul.

The good thing about this is that it appeared before the NBA finals (and the free press coverate) and the various large national events the city has hosted.

I would like to see a comparison of '05, '06 and '07 to date, hotel & restaurant bookings along with car rental and RTA Redline rides started from the airport.

Raleigh-Durham remained solidly in third place for the second year in a row, based on its low prices and discounts.

If anyone even thinks of criticizing  haphazardly the other 9 cities listed, enjoy your week off.

I will not sit around and babysit this thread. (instead, pat your self on the back and have a Cleveland+LoveFest

Well, since I have never been to 1,3,4, or 5, I will not.

But the inclusion of CLV is nothing that surprises me... or probably anyone else here  (except for maybe two people i can think of).

Anybody else get there sticker yet?

Got mine.

Also, there is a newsletter available from Cleveland+ marketing. It could be described as a "readers digest" version of everything already posted on UO. Here are some stories from the past issue:

Pass the Plus

+ August 2007 +

Cleveland Plus is catching on! Whether it's with the help of our city mayors, chambers of commerce, young professionals, convention and visitors' bureaus, companies, organizations – or The President of the United States – people are passing the Cleveland Plus spirit.

Photo featured on abcnews.com

That's right - Cleveland Plus made an unexpected national debut when President George W. Bush came to Cleveland on July 11. During his address, President Bush held up one of the new CLE+ European-style bumper stickers.  The photo graced the pages of a number of newspapers, national news Web sites and the Yahoo home page.  (Want a sticker of your own?  E-mail your contact info to [email protected])

Brain Gain: Study shows grads aren't leaving

Contrary to popular perception, the Cleveland Plus region is experiencing a brain gain. This is according to a study recently released by the Ohio Board of Regents, which reports that 75 percent of Ohio college grads are choosing to stay in the area following graduation. In fact, Ohio's brain gain is 2 percent higher than most states. YSU Receives $2 Million from U.S. Department of Defense

A $2 million appropriation from the U.S. Department of Defense has been secured to create the National Center of Excellence for Industrial Metrology and Three-Dimensional Imaging at Youngstown State University. The Youngstown Business Incubator and Youngstown-based M-7 Technologies and Zethus Software have been named as the three prime external collaborators for the new center.

Highland Heights and Twinsburg make CNN Money Magazine's 100 Best Places to Live

Congratulations to Highland Heights and Twinsburg – both in the Cleveland Plus region – for making CNN Money Magazine's 100 Best Places to Live! In fact, there were more ranked cities in the Cleveland Plus region than in 29 states in the nation. Other notables included Kent ranking within the top 25 for singles and Maple Heights, Garfield Heights and Boardman as cities with the most affordable housing in the country.

Are you never going to put on a blue tie, or hold a microphone also?

oh good, cuz george bush has a really positive opinion from the public and everyone in the country knows what that weird "european styled" sticker is not a country in europe, but instead an airport abbrevation from cleveland.

I don't care.

I still got one and put it on my car.

tongue_smile.gif

I don't know about the sticker, but I love to blow that photo into a big wall poster. That's priceless ... I love the expression on his stupid mug.

I don't have a car but I got one anyway :)

I'm going to try to get the City Wheels folk to put it on their cars!

You should give them an UO sticker, too.

How do I get one?

I really wish the the Cleveland + campaign could've come up with something more original than the whole European sticker thing. How many times have we seen this already? I don't mean this to offend anyone that's already bought one or that likes it or whatever. It's just my opinion that I just wish they would've created something that didn't involve a very tired cliche.

Having said that, I'm glad that they're doing this campaign. I think it's definitely good for the region as a whole. Any publicity is good publicity.

I hope I didn't offend anyone with my criticism. It is simply my desire to see design pushed a bit further in Cleveland. I'm only speaking out of frustration.

Musky, I was wondering about the UO sticker.....but I'll just snoop around the site to find it I guess.

^ Main page > site info

^ Got it, thanks.

But for the record (mods) the link at the top of the forum page is a 404

oh wow i didnt even realise the UO bumper stickers were available.  now one of those i would definately not mind having...

How many times have we seen this already?

I don't mean this to offend anyone that's already bought one or that likes it or whatever.

I never seen it before... except for the original deal.

And they're free.

It takes more then that to offend me - I use to be a cab driver.

You were a cab driver in Cleveland or elsewhere?

cleveland

almost four years

There is a HUGE supplement today in the pd promoting Cleveland+.

80 pages!

Wow .. nice!

Too bad it's not in another area's paper, though. :(

Wow .. nice!

Why?  The People in NE Ohio that bitch and complain that, "nothing is going on", "Cleveland is dead", etc. need to read this!  Maybe the folks in running this have finally read my letters stating we need a tiered marketing program that promotes the city/region properly starting at home!  ugh!

Is there an electronic link as I do not receive the printed edition of the (very) plain dealer!

Seeing as it was a supplement and every page had "ADVERTISEMENT" on the top, I doubt it will be online. I am under the impression Cleveland+ paid for it.

Man, the PD ad sales team must have had lobster for lunch on Friday, am I right!?! haha

Anything of interest in it?

^I didn't read every page, but pretty much everything we know here on urbanohio. From some upcoming projects, to the museums, to blurbs local cities and suburbs to the regions businesses and natural resources and other attractions. Also the ad is loaded with "The Cleveland Plus region." That term is all over the place. You even have interviews with people saying things like "We've been in Cleveland Plus for X years." More importantly though, the entire 80 page ad is pulsating with positivity!!! :-D

^ Nice! On the NBC Evening News tonight, they did a big feature on these two guys from Cleveland that invented the Swiffer and other stuff like that. They work out of an old church...near University Circle. I feel like this is the same place that was in that NY Times story a while back. Pretty neat!

it was probably Nottingham-Spirk Design, who was profiled in the nytimes article:

http://www.ns-design.com/

there was also a story on local tv a month ago on NS (maybe it was an original wkyc story that was picked up for a slow sunday).

here is the link to a reprint of a July 2007 Fortune article:

They didn't do anything.  I'm sure it was a free ad.  Besides the Publisher of the PD needs to be fired and the entire sales and marketing department needs to be restructured!

Good point, and I hope it does help promote a positive attitude among Clevelanders. It definitely should! But it would be great to spread the news to other areas as well, letting them know what's going on in Cleveland. Who knows? Maybe they already did that, and my comments are a moot point.

The Cleveland Plus campaign was aimed at other cities. I don't know how much advertising their doing in those other markets. I've seen a Cleveland Plus banner ad a few times on the Columbus dispatch website.

i havent seen a damn thing about anything in ohio in ny in a long time. last thing i saw was one cleveland clinic ad on cable tv about six months ago. nothing in print either.

however, just yesterday i saw a "come to nebraska" tv commercial. nebraska, can you freakin beleive it?

LOL. That's hilarious.

I think it's great the NY Times covered that Cleveland company. Why shouldn't Cleveland be advertising in the NY Times? Maybe not an entire section (not sure that would fly, anyway), but spread the word around these parts!

yeah, lets all gang up on poor nebraska.

It's not that Nebraska's bad. But it's a lot further away than Ohio is from NY.

i'm sure the extra 25 minutes in the plane makes a real difference to the NY-er that does decide to stop in flyover country.

I've seen the Cleveland + campaign, in various formats in western, NY & PA; Philadelphia; Washington, DC; the NC research triangle area; Boston, st. Louis, Houston & Detroit.

I understand the placement in all but St. Louis.

If I'm not mistaken it will be in London, Paris (to coincide with the new Paris flight) and China as per Continental's attempt to get the new route.

Awesome.

I've seen it in various formats in western, NY & PA; Philadelphia; Washington, DC; the NC research triangle area; Boston, st. Louis, Houston & Detroit.

By "it," do you mean "come to Nebraska" or "Cleveland+"?

nebraska, can you freakin beleive it

Is that thier marketing line?  I think I like that better than Cleveland plus, not that I hate Cleveland +, just saying

EDIT: I am totally going to Nebraska for my next vacation

"Cleveland. You bet your ass!"

Nebraska...no I can't freaking believe it!  ugh!

I've seen the Cleveland + campaign.

Ok, thanks for the clarification :)

Just a warning. Some of you might need to sit down before you read this. Because it made me angry. You have been warned. Two words: Feagler. Brett. Need I say more?

A Warning from Cleveland: Could Baseball Fail D.C.?

By Mark Fisher

The extraordinary frenzy of construction that now surrounds the Washington Nationals ballpark is a tribute to ex-Mayor Tony Williams and all those who believed that bringing baseball back to the District would end up being a smart move for the city, even if taxpayers and fans are fronting $611 million to build the stadium.

But there is nothing automatic about expanding the tax base and sparking the economic development that stadium proponents have long touted as the justification for public investment in a ballpark.
