Well, yes and no.  It's like having a deferred paycheck.  I don't get paid now, but the more people that move downtown, the better my property value, so I get paid later.

I'm so used to PR shiz at this point I just kinda shrug my shoulders and say "Okay".  Living downtown literally makes you an instant PR case.  The 19 Action News people apparently want to film a news segment of the Buff Brides Bootcamp I'm in at 1-2-1, and my trainer was all nervous about it.  I'm just like "as long as my crotch isn't on the news, whatever!"

Sweetie it's all about residuals!

Here's a peek at the 2010 LiveCLEVELAND! guide:

45,000 copies have already gone out with the May issue of Cleveland Magazine, and another 12,000+ copies will be distributed throughout the next year.

Wow! That is really nice, thanks for sharing the link.

As someone who has been in (and heavily promoted) the theatrical productions Rocky Horror and Sexually Explicit Material, my crotch has been on the news plenty of times.  Now that I'm over 40 though, nobody wants to see it anymore :)

Plenty of people have seen my crotch (well, covered by a leotard) over my life as a result of dancing on stage for many, many years......  I feel like that time is over, hahaha.

I'm glad you said leotard and not G-string.  Ba-dum-bum!

The director of LiveCLEVELAND! asked if I knew any women that live downtown,  and I immediately thought of docta and contacted her, and she was on board.

Doc broc, way to be an excellent ambassador for your neighborhood.  I bet your story will have people looking into downtown as their next living destination.

Well, that's the hope.  The journalist who interviewed me was just like "Why don't you just go ahead and talk instead of me asking you set questions?"  I had a mental freak out for a couple seconds cause I was expecting to be asked specific questions, but it turned out okay.  We literally had a photo shoot for that picture - we walked around the area for a good half hour and snapped pics on E. 12th, at the Galleria, and more.  I should e-mail the photographer to get my hands on some more of those......  The picture they ended up using was the shot I had initially suggested, because I had taken a picture from about that spot when the townhomes were under construction to show family members, so I knew it was good :).  The mister was shaking his head at me because I was bossing him around during the shoot cause I knew what the photographer wanted us to do even before he fully explained it.  I really think I missed a calling as a photographer, lol.  Here's to getting that Nikon D90 for a wedding present!

I was wondering if all those aerial shots of the Rock Hall during the nationally-televised Cavs game would help Cleveland tourism at all.  Interestingly enough, I just found this recent article coming from, of all places, a Massachuesetts newspaper:

^Aw, I thought the video of the kids was really cute!  I was in Tower City the day this was going on but had no clue what was happening and just ignored the whole thing.  While I wish they would get excited about something besides a sports start who isn't going to be here much longer, at least they did something fun and cute.  And I really liked the Pos Cleve video.  I posted both videos on a couple of websites.

Night image of Cleveland to grace wall where LeBron once reigned

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The downtown Cleveland building that once featured a huge image of LeBron James could soon display a different civic image: A night view of the Cleveland skyline, courtesy of the Sherwin-Williams Co.

The paint and coatings company is asking city design and planning officials to approve plans for the huge banner, which would cover a wall left empty this summer after James announced his decision to leave the Cleveland Cavaliers for the Miami Heat.

Instead of a basketball player tossing chalk, the banner would show illuminated skyscrapers as seen from the Cuyahoga River. Above them, the words "Our Home Since 1866. Our Pride Forever." In one lower corner is the Sherwin-Williams name and logo.

Sherwin-Williams owns the building, the Landmark Office Towers where the company keeps its headquarters and about 2,000 employees. Since crews tore down James's image in July, the company has been considering options for the blank space, a wall designed to abut another tower than was never built.

there is a picture of the proposed image as well on the site.

I thought Forest City owned Landmark Office Towers.  I guess I should retract some of the comments I have made in the past about their failure to clean the south wall and redirect them at Sherwin Williams.  I do like the idea for the new banner.  Nice shot to use (although I feel the view from the Superior viaduct is better) -

No I told you that.  When SOHIO Vacated/reduced office space.  SW bought the leases, then the building and the building mgmt division.

Ick. I think this campaign is pretty lame.  I don't know the psychology, but shouldn't a campaign be credible?  "THE" medical capital?  Right.

Medical Capital project aims to stretch Northeast Ohio's reputation as health-care powerhouse

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Northeast Ohio has a serious identity problem when it comes to health care: Only 10 percent of people outside the area associate the region with the medical industry, a recent nationwide survey found.

The response will be unveiled today at the City Club of Cleveland.

It's called the Medical Capital, an effort by health-care communication professionals to shape the national perception of the region as a powerhouse in the health-care industry. Ultimately, the goal is to bring money, entrepreneurs and established organizations to Northeast Ohio.

Article continues at: http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2010/09/medical_capital.html

The blog is at: http://www.themedicalcapital.com/blog/

The City Club had a forum on "The Medical Capital" effort but I only caught the last 5-10 minutes on WCPN.  Apart from one guy being a dick with the way he chose to ask his question it sounded pretty promising.  I had the same "ick" type thoughts about the idea but the way folks were talking was that it was more on the backs of the institutions and businesses pushing this idea than a cheesy marketing scheme.  They specifically detracted from the insinuation that it's a branding campaign.  We shall see of course.

Hopefully I'll find a link sometime soon.  I assume it's a recent forum since they mentioned that they were just now letting the public know what the local medical industry has been talking about internally.

It's amazing and sad how people on this forum disregard efforts like this campaign without any thought. Why don't you check it out thoroughly before you say it sucks. I mean I think hundreds of professional people in the industry have just a bit more knowledge of what could work. It really brings down the credibility of this site when you constantly read this type of crap. I mean as soon as you hear "ick"? Please, what are you a sophmore at St Joe's?

The idea of rock 'n' roll music should expand throughout Cleveland to become more of a theme

Cleveland needs to increase rock 'n' roll profile

Posted: 10/14/2010

By: Leon Bibb

CLEVELAND - I grew up listening to rock 'n' roll music. I was a child of the Motown sound and its smooth and heartfelt quality is still a part of me. When I am walking along any street, I can hear the music, but it is usually in my mind.

I wonder why aren't there stronger rock 'n' roll sounds emanating from the city, especially because Cleveland is the rock 'n' roll capital of America -- really of the world.

Cleveland is blessed to have the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum located in this city. It does a wonderful job of promoting the music and the culture that surrounds the many, many decades of the various sounds under the rock umbrella.

But why aren't there stronger references to the rock 'n' roll capital at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, Public Square, and the many shopping malls, amusement centers and other places where people gather?

http://www.newsnet5.com/dpp/news/local_news/cleveland_metro/the-idea-of-rock-n-roll-music-should-expand-throughout-cleveland-to-become-more-of-a-theme

^ I agree totally.  When I visited Memphis, TN this summer, they had rock 'n' roll and specifically Elvis-themed crap EVERYWHERE.  It was gaudy and obnoxious and people loved it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Memphis probably has a better national reputation than we do, and that's a city with serious problems.  They have out-of-control crime, areas of the CITY that are basically the stereotypical rural Mississippi dilapidated-trailer-park-overrun-with-kudzu urban "prairie," and the biggest draw downtown is a hotel where you can watch ducks ride an elevator to the roof.  Yet you say Memphis to people, and the first thing that comes to mind is Beale Street and Graceland.

I think that we have more control over our image than we realize.

^ I would argue that Memphis and Cleveland have a similar rep

In terms of what?  Music?

Yeah Cleveland certainly doesnt capitalize on the many things that it could.  The Rock and Rollthing being one of them.

Agree about Memphis, but certainly Memphis is over-rated (a sh#$hole) and Cleveland being under-rated (not as big a sh#$hole as one might expect).

Downtown Cleveland Alliance touts growing businesses in new Cleveland promotion

Saturday, December 25, 2010, 10:00 AM

By Michelle Jarboe, The Plain Dealer

Ads painting Cleveland as a business destination are popping up in the regional editions of national magazines. During the next few months, that message will appear in local publications, on banners on downtown buildings, on YouTube and other websites and on mobile devices across Northeast Ohio.

In the first year of a long-term marketing effort, the Downtown Cleveland Alliance is spending $1.2 million to open a business-development center, highlight growing companies downtown, reach out to businesses across northern Ohio and trumpet a new image of the city ...

... Read more at http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2010/12/downtown_cleveland_alliance_de.html.

As someone who visited Cleveland for the first time six years ago because of the marketing efforts, I feel I can give some perspective on this topic. Due to an insert in the Detroit Free Press, I decided to go on a weekend getaway to Cleveland instead of Chicago. It was marketed as a fun weekend getaway and affordable. This was a six or eight page color insert in the Sunday paper. It got me there and I went back several times. These marketing efforts work!  Michigan funded their "Pure Michigan" campaign for awhile and tourism increased.

Cleveland has  a lot to offer and many people even those living withing 250 miles don't know about it. For those looking for an urban getaway for an extended weekend, it is a perfect trip.

Man.... that one commenter on cleveland.bomb is on a mission to make sure no one wants to be his neighbor

Some of his later comments show that his heart is in the right place but man that was a lot of venom to see past...

Hts, you said it.  I used to read CDC all the time (in the days before UO) and I felt like I needed to take some aspirin beforehand to avoid cardiac issues.  My blood would just boil.

As for marketing this great city, I had a thought...  I currently live in Washington, DC and "talk up" Cleveland to my friends all the time.  I've found that "google earth" tends to be the best way to show people the unique place that Cleveland is.  Seeing 3 major stadiums, beautiful old architecture, lake views, and urban streetscapes all condensed downtown with transportation connections to a world class cultural campus (UC), market district, little italy, and more gets people excited and they immediately forget what they initially thought of the city.

The pdf's recently published for the group plan by LMN that contained ideas for connecting Cleveland included a heavy emphasis on streetscaping and urban furniture that make regions unique.  The WHD, EC, Playhouse Sq., UC etc.  I think we need to continue to promote these as distinct regions, and make sure tourists and visitors know "where they are" within the city at all times.  "Sell" the idea of "Go Fourth" or "The Nation's other Broadway", and think BIG.

People will have their opinions regardless, (just read CDC) so we might as well promote Cleveland as a place you'd never want to leave once you get here.

Agreed. That's what I like about the new marketing campaign ... They're capturing the stories of people who really could set up shop anywhere and have chosen downtown Cleveland. And they're doing a good job of capturing why they made that decision. The Valerie Mayen video in particular speaks to your point about people who come with no long-term intent to stay and accidentally fall in love with the place.

I also just love the aesthetic of the videos ... Kind of understated but beautiful and cinematic. Would love to see CDCs mirroring marketing efforts like this outside of downtown, particularly UCI (the only other one I can think of that's done similar video work is Ohio City). My one note for DCA would be that I'd love to see a little more diversity in future video series. The current "We Are Downtown" campaign has 6 spokespeople: 5 white men and one Latina. I would love to see more variation in age, gender and ethnicity that is more representative of diversity downtown. Otherwise, I think this is a really remarkable campaign and a welcome departure from previous attempts to market downtown, the city and the region ... Certainly a step above "Cleveland's a Plum" :D

I just have to add to his particular topic.

I read the above linked article and watched the attached videos. Incredible! I loved the videos! And I agree with all the comments above regarding marketing the city.

I particularly agree with Burnham_2011. I too live outside of NE Ohio for the time being. I am living in Charlotte, one of the so-called 'up-and-coming' cities. One thing is for sure, it does not have the assets Cleveland does. Don't get me wrong. It's a nice city, but it has no character. No culture. It has no E 4th Street or W 6th Street. It has no theater district. It's downtown is small and compact. 95% of the buildings are new skyscrapers. Charlotte saw no need to preserve its historical buildings. I could go on and on but I'll spare everyone any further obvious bias I have regarding how great Cleveland is.

One thing is certain - Cleveland has so much going for it. It has so many things other cities and regions wish they had. I'm glad to see the DCA is using these assets in it's marketing campaign.

Like Burnham_2011, I promote Cleveland to everyone down here. I'm one of those relentless 'nothing is better than Cleveland' boasters. (All my friends down here hate me for that!!!!) I can't help it. Cleveland is in my heart, and will be, forever. It is my home and a place I can truly say I love. (Sorry for the mush!)

^ Great post!

Whenever I think of Charlotte, I think of Amway conventions and some people like Pastor Gas.

:-) Just kidding....its a nice city, but I thought of this stuff because when I was actually involved with Amway a long long time ago, the tapes they gave us were from Charlotte, and the conventions were often in Charlotte.....And, many of the members at the conventions were arm swaying and really big into "praise the lord"

Also, I agree with how you have described it in contrast to Cleveland. It lacks the bones and feel of something that has been established a long time and with permanence.

link doesn't work. This is the 2nd one today on here that goes to a blank page. I think it's because the period at the end of the sentence is being included in the link?

It doesn't work.  It's 8 shades of gray's post, he needs to fix.

Fixed.

What's up with the PD printing a curse word in it's unedited form (in a quote) in this article?  Perhaps they are trying to appeal to a wider audience? :-D  I'm surprised this made it past the  PD editor, but it was an amusing surprise.

HAHAHAHHAH Bob Evans only!

And they list one in Columbus first?  That's the worst list of "Area Restaurants" I have ever seen.  And that came out of CLE+!

That's a lot of "+".
