^ there was like a skeet shooting range next to it too and that probably protected the shoreline area a bit. i dk if that is there anymore. doubtful. anyway its good news and it will be interesting to see what becomes of that prime waterfront site as time goes by.

One guy's eyesore is another's navigational aid (VFR pilots use Avon and Eastlake stacks frequently for reporting points).

oh geez well at least there was one good thing about it lol.

i am sure there have been quite a few lost large industrial chimney stacks lost over the years in the area. lorain tore their old waterfront power plant down a while back, not to mention the old steel plant stacks. and cleveland's old power plant is gone now too of course.

i guess you have to go back to tabbing church steeples up there!

Whoa, you just unlocked a repressed memory of sneaking onto the no-trespassing beach and hearing the gunshots haha

Not the only good thing...that hot water jetting out of the plant meant winter surfing in 70 degree water vs. 40...and summer surfing in 85 deg water...just like Costa Rica, but nope, you’re surfing in Avon.

^ oh nice. you couldn’t surf like that around lorain’s waterfront power plant because it was surrounded and calmed by breakwalls. but it was the best fishing spot in town in the winter. yes the site was called ‘hot waters’ lol. its still a boat launch and fishing piers, but of course being lorain the power plant site sits empty. hopefully something impressive and mixed use goes in there someday, its an excellent waterfront site too.

We will get buy, but unlike your random church steeple or factory, these stacks were ACTUAL FAA VFR reporting points.  Don't worry though.  The FAA will just remove when torn down.   I did like one suggestion in the suburban development thread to use the taller stack for an observation tower.

Disappointed to see this historic building, called the Traveler Building, 2843 West 25th Street, be slated for demolition. Tremont Animal Clinic owns it. I've tried reaching out to them to find out why they want to demolish it but no luck so far.....

Apparently a small deli as recently as 2014.

Neat example of Google Maps lag if you go to E. 156th and Waterloo.   The gold building on the NW corner was approved for demolition and on the verge.   From the east the rebuild is just beginning, from the west the work is further along.   Stuff is savable almost until its gone, in many cases.

Clearly there has been some recent work done, but either they found something or this was triggered by the construction out front.

I know I've posted it around here before, but another tool (and perspective) is the county's aerial imagery. Go to maps.cuyahogacounty.us and click the Eagleview tab - you'll be able to see the building from multiple angles at 45* view. Imagery goes back for years so you can really see the transition of different areas.

I doubt it.  It was vacant and in horrible condition.

Also, it's amazing to me how often we have cars driving straight into buildings around here.  People are just out of control.

Sad to report the loss of these brick townhomes at 1478 Crawford in Hough. A demolition permit has been submitted for them. They're under state forfeiture and nature is reclaiming them. They're across the street from the high-rise Addison Apartments. But for some good news, the nearby Rudy's Deli, 7038 Wade Park Ave, is going to be renovated.

Huge list of state-funded demos just dropped. Most on the East-side, not surprisingly. Also a few coming down on West 25th opposite Metro. Unfortunately, including the ‘LINCOLN’ building that I really hoped someone would do something with one day.

That's a huge list, without any breakout to make it easy to tell if any of these buildings are really significant.  It looks like a bunch of residential properties for the most part.

How that big apartment building on Lakeshore just east of 140 dodged the list I have no  idea.

Unless demo permits have been applied for, it's uncertain.  They could have major rehab in the works, or just be trying to clear out squatters.

But IIRC they tried to redevelop this street back in the 90s.

Photos: The Cleveland Play House, Now Being Demolished, Through the Years

By Brett Zelman

The Cleveland Clinic has begun demolishing the Cleveland Play House, which the hospital system bought in 2009 and which has sat empty since 2011. It would have needed $40 million in fixes, the Clinic said in community meetings last spring, and, even then, the building's layout would make it unworkable for use.

The 12 acres will be a staging area for future Clinic construction in the short term and then serve as surface parking, though the Clinic has said it could be the site of long-term development.

Built in 1926 by the theater company that now calls the Allen Theatre home, the building was an architectural landmark and has hosted a roster of legendary performers through the decades including Paul Newman, Alan Alda, Margaret Hamilton and June Squibb.

Are they starting to take down the East 115th St. homes?  Or is that something different?

it was a 1 story UH building at 2071 Cornell rd. It had been fenced off for a few weeks. I haven't heard what might be replacing it. Of the homes on E 115th, most of those continue to decay, but no fencing has gone up on any of those.

Appears to have been a modular building.  No loss...

Nor do these two buildings at 3005 East 116th. Demolition permit was submitted for 3005 which is the building one-off from the corner. Ironically the worse-looking building at the corner, 3001 East 116th, doesn't have a pending or approved demolition permit application. However there is a search warrant application pending that could lead to the building's condemnation and demolition.

3005 has been shut down since 2011, 3001 even before that as per Google Maps.  The latter was a convenience store which a lot of public traffic likely, that warrant could be for any number of things.

198-year-old Sheffield Village house to be torn down

By MARTIN MCCONNELL | [email protected] |

April 14, 2023

The house at 5478 Detroit Road in Sheffield Village has stood for nearly two centuries.

Formerly known as the Dechant Farm, the white farmhouse has been a fixture of the village’s stretch of Detroit Road since 1825, according to city records.

The house will be torn down sometime this year, according to former owner Charlene Dechant.

The structure has been in the Dechant family’s name for generations, until it was recently sold to a development group headed by Pat Perrino of Perrino Custom Homes.

^ Looks re-muddled beyond recognition - I can see what I assume is the original 2 story farmhouse, but with the awful additions I wonder if any original details remain.  One of the storefronts was a barber shop for a while.  Not sure the last time it was a residence.

Truly sad.  I went to the estate sale and the bones of the house were amazing.   For whatever the new owner is paying to tear it down and build new, they could have totally pimped out the existing structure.   I partially blame the city of Cleveland, which allowed newer homes to built with a much further setback, blocking the views from this much older home.
