Mold and/or asbestos could have made it impossible to bring up to code. Plus the issue with the views.

May 14, 20241 yr 3 century-old structures up for demolition on Cleveland’s East Side Published: May. 13, 2024, 3:21 p.m. By Megan Sims, cleveland.com CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Three dilapidated buildings, all a century old, are in line for demolition to clean up a corner in the Forest Hills area of Cleveland’s East Side. Plans submitted by the city to the Cleveland Planning Commission call for the razing of a two-story structure and two one-story buildings that once housed retail, a warehouse and apartments on Superior Avenue between East 124th and East 125th streets. They sit on about a third of an acre. https://www.cleveland.com/realestate-news/2024/05/3-century-old-structures-up-for-demolition-on-clevelands-east-side.html

The owner of the bar I used to work at bought the old Forest City Auto Parts building in Bedford with the intent of tearing it down for parking, after he let the fire department do some training in it for awhile. It's not uncommon with buildings that wouldn't be worth what it would cost to rehab them.

No news on what if anything would replace it. I live two buildings from this garage and I'm very happy to hear they plan to demolish it. Right now its an unlit corridor that sometimes has people sleeping in it. Its quite spooky. Personally, I think it would be a great location for a little park. The Winton Manor next door is a very large Senior CMHA building that always has folks sitting in camping chairs outside along the street and in the parking lot/garage. A park would do wonders for their quality of life as well as the people in the Osborn Building, Halle Building, the future Bolivar Apartments, as well as the other smaller buildings. Not to mention the County HQ is right across the street.

Using GIS, the park is about 5,600 sq ft, with the garage and the attached surface lot totaling around 36,000 sq ft. This is an actual baseball-toss from my apartment window. Its always has 1-4 homeless people sleeping on the benches and recently a tent has popped up. There's another parking structure that lets out to Huron and has a surface lot on its roof that is at grade with Prospect. Its been taped off for months now and I assume that its set to be demolished soon as well. Its owned by Playhouse, so maybe when that segment of Huron is pedestrianized, this lot will be apart of the project scope in some way.

Why are we pretending like a park that is less than one acre where a decrepit parking structure rots is such a bad idea? This part of downtown does not have a proper greenspace. Also, how is a cut-through road with minimal use being pedestrianized in the second largest theater district in the country a bad idea? Its just the area from the end of that screenshot to Euclid. Just kind of feels like you're not being very constructive in your criticisms.
October 29, 2024Oct 29 I think my stance on pedestrian only zones has been made clear on this site. Also it's off topic here. However, as someone who walks down Huron nearly every day, I don't understand what positive is going to come out of removing auto access and parking on the street. At any given point in time on weekdays, weekends, game days, there is likely less than 10 people walking down the already oversized sidewalks on both sides of the street as it is. I get it, some pedestrian zones are great and necessary due to the amount of people who walk down a particular street in cities. I simply don't think Huron Road, at this point, warrants removing the only thing that I can foresee giving it life; people using parking at meters, going into the little restaurant or smoothy joint, and then moving along. I'm not some advocate for cars, but it does allow the businesses on the street to be successful and I believe they would struggle without it. As for the idea of making another park on the current parking garage you mentioned, in my opinion, we should be building more residential buildings with ground floor retail to increase downtown residents and overall density as opposed to creating more under utilized green space. Not to mention that on Huron specifically there are lightly used green spaces at either end of the street.

From Ken's Article: "The goal is to effectively expand US Bank Plaza and create a venue for a street market of pop-up vendors and artists." Think of this more as E. 4th, one of the most scenic areas of downtown. This would expand retail and hopefully allow for some of these businesses to be open on the weekends or even past lunch on weekdays. I fail to see how the a couple dozen meters are keeping the business successful.... There is hardly anything there other than 1942 Mexican restaurant and the back door to get to Yours Truly. T And lightly used green spaces? The "park" I showed earlier and the US Bank Plaza are not green at all. They have trees but it's entirely brick concrete everywhere else. I don't disagree that density and ground level retail would be great here. A park was just a suggestion. Regardless, I hope they demo this garage quickly! It's particularly spooky to see the silhouettes of people in the unlit, crumbling structure.

If it's a sucess, game on.

I'd fully support removal of the vacant burger hut and renovating the west end of the plaza to provide more space for pop-up vendors. Temporarily shutting down the street (at the Euclid end) also would be a worthwhile trial. There are multiple parking garages in that section of Huron, plus deliveries to the hotel, for which some vehicle access will need to be maintained.

The Prospect side is a full story above the Huron side. And one of the adjacent buildings is another old parking garage. Building something on this site actually seems like the better alternative in this case.
