Just your periodic reminder that a mansion in Detroit went from this:       to this:     Nothing, and I repeat, nothing is "unsalvageable". It just comes

^well, at least from that perspective you will not be able to see it with the overhead walkway blocking the view

Overhead walkway as of now isnt happening, unless you kknow something?

^Meaning it was affirmatively rejected or pulled off the table?  Or just that they haven't yet been given approvals?

Well, last I knew it would have been an uphill battle, and they hadnt made any real moves yet to initiate the process.  I havent seen anything recently either way though.

I know they will likely that Forest City will lose historic tax credit for the Higbees building, but I think they knew that all along.

The bridge was aproved by the planning commission, they did ask for it to look a little nicer, but I have not heard anything that says they will not proceed with it.

Neither have I.  Im just saying there are many steps they would have to go through for this "bridge" to be allowed to be built, none of which to my knowledge they have proceeded with.

The planning Commissions approval means little in regard to this process.

^Got it, thanks.  I wasn't sure if there was some affirmative news I should be celebrating, but even the absence of bad news in this regard is a bit of a relief.

Yeah I guess my post could have been construed various ways...  I just meant that they have an uphill battle and a schedule to keep, and I that I

havent seen where they have made the required moves for this, which I'm maybe at least wanting to view as good news...?

From the Uptown thread:

Pictures of the area you're referring to? Or something to Google Maps?

I don't know the exact address but its on the same side of the street as the Cleveland Free Clinic. There's the Free Clinic, a dingy old strip mall, and then this gigantic warehouse looking building that I'm talking about, right before you get into East Cleveland. Here's the address to the Free Clinic for using Google Maps. Hope this helps.

12201 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio 44106

Decided on my walk back from work to walk over there and check it out.  As you may have already guessed due to the thread I am posting in, it is to be demolished.  Either Case Western or one of the Hospitals owns it.  The demo workers told me it was Hospital owned, but I find it very hard to believe.

Here are some pictures I took about 15 min ago:

Hmm, ok. I figured something was about to happen to it. Did anyone tell you what was going to replace it or is this coming down just because?

^ Nope they didn't say.  My guess is possible temporary parking, but I haven't heard anything.

The old ZBT house on Case's campus is being demolished in a week or two.

I was wondering what was going on here. So, with the two homes over at 108th & Magnolia possibly being razed and now the ZBT house on Bellflower probably being razed...that's 3 mansions in this historic area that we're going to lose.

Despicable.

The march goes on and on...

Did the church get approval to demolish those two homes on 108th and Magnolia?  Or am I thinking of a different demolition proposal?

Here's an update...vote is tomorrow??  It would be better if more than the 10 parishioners from the Mt. Zion church weren't the only public there...

Cleveland's proposed historic district near University Circle plan draws protest

CLEVELAND, Ohio --Protesters opposed to creating an historic district on the edge of Cleveland's University Circle rallied Tuesday before a City Council committee considered the proposal.

About 10 people gathered on the front steps of City Hall at noon. They carried signs calling for the ouster of council members Jeff Johnson and Kevin Conwell, sponsors of the legislation.

The property is owned by the Medical Center Company (a non-profit energy provider for UH, Case, CMA, etc.) who is planning an advanced energy facility of the site.

Voting is supposed to be today:

What houses were at risk?

If the church really wanted to have the Landmarks commission allow them to demolish those houses, they should have just set aside spaces for casino parking.

While this may place some financially strain on the church this is very good news for this neighborhood and preserving its historic character.  This area has some of the best homes in Cleveland.  I hope the church can think more creatively in expanding its ministries but doing it within a historic framework.

It's not that I want to see this house demoed (it's pretty impressive from the street), but I'm still pretty wary about permanently freezing the circa 1900 suburban nature of this part of University Circle.

I thought it was funny...

Don't worry, MTS thinks The Green Lantern is a good movie, so his judgement has been called into question.

way to 'demolish' a comic book franchise

eh? eh? Meh!

OK.... haha.... who took the dump on Gilbert's Welcome Center site?

Looking at that picture really drives home just how limited the parking was for that area. Thank god we're getting more.

It has become clear to me that people who plan these types of developments (casinos) are convinced that "adequate" parking for a facility means no more than a 200 yard walk from the car to the facility, preferably entirely enclosed if possible.  Indeed if there was some way to have a parking space next to each individual slot machine they would be in heaven.  Don't even try to sell them on the fact that there are thousands of spaces located within a walking distance shorter than the average urban office worker tracks every day in all types of weather.

I imagine most of these guys were developing suburban shopping malls in the past.

Both of these things have already been confirmed.  The first being one of their requirements already mentioned and the second confirmed by KJP a while back.

This page, albeit short, contains posts from suburbanites or expats.

Is it any wonder parking is the main worry of any developer?

^I really have no idea what your point is here.  Could you please clarify?

I was thinking the same thing.

Honest, I think AJs post was sarcasm.  You know he's a very witty fellow!

actually... it's 50 yards that they consider the threshhold for parking... 200 yards would be considered "obscene"

It really is laughable on this message board when the forumers wracking their brains to find all the solutions, or the ones with the most angst at the moment, or, to the other extreme, unduly cheerleading so as to sugarcoat a situation ... are the suburbanites or expats.

Many times the solution might be looking in the mirror.

Hey expats!  Move home.

Hey suburbanites!  Move to the city's core.

What's wrong? Isnt Cleveland good enough for you?

Ok...that's you point....I was going to respond but see no reason to start a senseless argument and go off topic.

Pretty sure that Gilbert wants to attract patrons from outside the City core regardless of where Htsguy, Willyboy and myself choose where to live.  Critical mass or not, this parking deck in one form or another was going to happen.

You don't know me! I could be a parking magnate!

Back on topic, that's some mighty fine leveling they did on that site.

a sea of parking lots!  I have always questioned the practicality of the preservation of just The Stanley Block surrounded by nothing but parking structures. The City owned parking structure never made money for Cleveland but somehow adding more parking will. Was losing The Columbia Building really necessary? Who uses The Old May Company parking structure? Is this structure full 24/7?

I think it's time to move on from the Columbia.  It is a particularly bad chapter in the history book of how developers can convince Cleveland City Hall to sell out long term vision for short term cash.

Amen!.... to your first sentence

And Amen to the second.

what did they tear down the gigundic cold storage building for? is that site being redeveloped???

and where will those outrageous billboards go now? ha.

for the new interbelt bridge.

Does anyone find this ironic? KA Architects wins Adaptive Reuse Award for the Higbee Building from

Cleveland Restoration Society & AIA Cleveland Honor in May of 2009 and now the Higbee Building runs the risk of losing its historic tax credits due to KA Architects designs to mar the original facade with the raised walkway/welcome center.

Why are they not tearing down that ugly building in the middle of where they are going to but the parking garage?

^Go at it guys...I don't have the energy.

That is the Stanley Block.  You can read all about it in this and the Cleveland Demo thread
