May 28, 201213 yr That is disgusting. I thought Lakewood was supposedly enlightened? The Theatre was a terrible loss. There was, imho, a very good chance for the place to re-invent itself and to draw new crowds. The way it went down it's obvious the owners gave McDonalds the inside edge, as their closing was a sudden surprise to many. Now on the other hand, the new owners of another Lakewood institution, Mahalls Bowling, are going all out to make this an incredible space. http://www.coolcleveland.com/blog/2012/04/a-new-life-for-mahalls-20-lanes/ Watch this video on your Cool Cleveland mobile app. Cool Cleveland’s Thomas Mulready talks with Joe Pavlick and sister-in-law Kelly Flamos, the new owners of Mahall’s Twenty Lanes in Lakewood, who moved back to the region from Brooklyn, NY to turn an aging bowling alley into a hipster hangout. They’re breathing new life into a venerable Cleveland institution by bringing in live music & a simple menu and basically not changing anything else.

June 12, 201213 yr Stanley Block building owners fined $15,000 a day for violating court orders Published: Tuesday, June 12, 2012, 4:32 PM Updated: Tuesday, June 12, 2012, 4:37 PM Michelle Jarboe McFee, The Plain Dealer Follow Share Email Print CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A judge has slapped $15,000 in daily fines on the company that owns the Stanley Block, after the downtown Cleveland property owner failed to file reports on safety procedures and repairs at the historic building. Cleveland Housing Court Judge Raymond Pianka found Macron Investment Co. in contempt last week, after the company missed several reporting deadlines. An attorney for Macron, which owns the historic building, also missed the June 6 contempt hearing. As of Tuesday, the fines had mounted to $90,000 -- a hefty tab for a company whose only asset is the Stanley Block, a vacant, four-story structure wrapped by the Horseshoe Casino Cleveland's new welcome center and valet-parking garage. http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2012/06/stanley_block_building_owners.html
June 12, 201213 yr This now makes Cleveland a claimant against the building, and gives the city a stronger legal stake into whether the building is demolished, rebuilt or sold. June 13, 201213 yr Currently, the school isn't in the best shape. Many of the windows are broken, and there's been chain-link fence around it for the last 2 years. However, in it's location- there isn't too much of a market for ANYTHING besides sheriff sales right now.
June 15, 201212 yr Businessman Tony George wants to lease, remake the Stanley Block building in downtown Cleveland Published: Thursday, June 14, 2012, 7:23 PM Updated: Friday, June 15, 2012, 10:04 AM By Michelle Jarboe McFee, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Businessman Tony George hopes to lease and redevelop the Stanley Block building as a restaurant, conference center and meeting space. The chairman of the George Group, a cluster of businesses based in Lakewood, recently signed a letter of intent to lease the Stanley Block from Macron Investment Co., according to court testimony and a document filed Thursday. And he's willing to front the cash for repairs and chase historic-preservation tax credits for complete restoration, a potential $2.5 million project. O'Donnell, who handles business cases in the Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court, warned in April that a warrant would be issued for the attorney's arrest if Eisler failed to appear at a May 16th contempt hearing. June 15, 201212 yr Attorney for Macron Investment Co. arrested at end of hearing on Stanley Block shareholder case Whoa!! While I've needed to take a shower after speaking with Tony George, the guy does know how to develop restaurant and entertainment-related businesses. He never gets emotional with his businesses, so I don't know how well he would care for the historic Stanley Block. But this is now a very high profile location with lots of pedestrian traffic and is embroiled in legal troubles that makes its owners desirous of "getting out". So the Stanley Block is artificially devalued and its redevelopment has a much bigger upside now. June 15, 201212 yr City of Cleveland should've gotten tough with the owners of the building much sooner. Located right in the center of the proposed casino welcome center and the location has been known since 2009? For that matter, Cleveland should've gotten tough with the owners of dozens of buildings around the city much sooner. Too many owners sit on properties, with no maintenance, as if they were simply a vacant lot. Waiting for something to trigger an increase in value. While I'm glad Cleveland is finally taking firm action to get the building maintained or sold to new owners, they action is long overdue. Being a "cash-strapped" owner of a building should not be an excuse to let it deteriorate so badly that it's essentially demolition by neglect.
June 15, 201212 yr I say raze the structure and let the casino complete their parking structure. I'm all for preserving buildings of historical significance, but a 3 story sh*tbox that's been neglected for decades does not fall into that category for me. Though I do find it somewhat shady that Rock gaming bought stake in the building under a different LLC. Essentially muscling their way into having it demolished so they could own the entire block. But that's business I guess.
June 15, 201212 yr Though I do find it somewhat shady that Rock gaming bought stake in the building under a different LLC. That's not shady. It is common practice. In fact, I wouldn't be suprised if that LLC is owned by another LLC which is owned by a limited partnership which is owned by a general partnership which is owned by an LLC and on for a few more 'corporate web' levels beyond that.

I'm all for preserving buildings of historical significance, but a 3 story sh*tbox that's been neglected for decades does not fall into that category for me. Good point! The 30 years of neglect does negate the 140 years that the Stanley Block has stood, all that has happened there and the solid, beautiful architecture that can't be replicated today. We should feel honored to allow the expansion of this historic and culturally enriching parking deck that has only fallen down once in it's first year of existence.

On Thursday, a city commission narrowly rejected another attempt by the Euclid Avenue Church of God to secure permission to demolish its building. The tiny church, a protected city landmark, sits empty at East 86th Street and Euclid, in the shadow of the Cleveland Clinic's main campus. The congregation's pastor says the Clinic has offered to pay $500,000 for the 0.16-acre property beneath the church, if the building is razed.

July 13, 201212 yr Well the next time it will be approved. They just keep putting it on there and letting it further deteriorate. Initially it was unanimous to not allow it, now it was nearly an even split due to the increased level of deterioration. Unless they find a use for it in the next few months it will be a goner the next time that they put on for demolition.
July 13, 201212 yr Maple Heights High School is about to be torn down (except for the Wylie Athletic Center which is a separate building). It's actually the last of six schools in Maple Heights (2 junior highs/middle schools and 3 of the 4 elementary schools) to be torn down during the last couple years. Ironically, the two oldest buildings are intact: the original "Little Red Schoolhouse" hosts the historical society and Granger School was converted to school board offices a couple decades ago. The last of the alumni tours is going to be July 22 at 11am. Over 300 people showed up for the July 7 tour so I doubt they are checking credentials.

July 19, 201212 yr ^^where is the new high school going? On the same site? Next to it. On the other side of the gym building closer to Lee Road. They are putting Milkovich Middle School by Stafford Stadium (where Stafford School used to be, more or less) and three elementary schools (separated by grade groups) on a campus where West Junior High and Dunham School were. West Junior High could be in textbooks as an example of how not to mothball a building. It was less then twenty years old when it closed. But they shut off the heat and not the water, you can guess the rest.
August 2, 201212 yr Via an e-mailed press release........ FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: August 1, 2012 Demolition Funding Awards Announced CLEVELAND-On Wednesday August 1, 2012, Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Bill Mason announced the selection of several cities that will share $1,000,000 in earmarked demolition funds based on applications solicited throughout the County. The $1,000,000 is part of a $5,000,000 grant that Prosecutor Mason made available to the Cuyahoga County Land Reutilization Corporation (“CCLRC”) which will be utilized as local funds to match an additional $5,000,000 from the Ohio Attorney General’s Moving Ohio Forward Demolition Program. As part of a large mortgage fraud settlement by Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine, Cuyahoga County is eligible to receive $11.8 million from this fund provided Cuyahoga County can match it with local funds. Prosecutor Mason provided $5 million of this local fund to the CCLRC, and the CCLRC is providing $6.8 million. Of the $5 million in local matching funds, Prosecutor Mason earmarked $1 million to select cities requiring blight removal and/or stabilization. Prosecutor Mason stated, “We received some quality and very specific applications from our municipalities. The targeted grants to these cities will assure that demolition funds are well spent, but also that cities in urgent need will get their share.” The grants will be administered through the CCLRC which itself will engage in over 1,200 residential demolition projects throughout the County in the next eighteen months. “The Land Bank is the best organization to administer these grants because of its exceptional business and procurement practices, as well as its cutting edge knowledge on land banking, environmental regulations and land repurposing,” said Prosecutor Mason. The cities receiving funding are listed below along with the amounts of the specific awards: Cleveland Heights $100,000 Euclid $100,000 Garfield Heights $100,000 Lakewood $50,000 North Olmsted $50,000 North Royalton $50,000 Parma $100,000 Parma Heights $90,000 Shaker Heights $100,000 South Euclid $100,000 Village of Newburgh Heights $100,000 Warrensville Heights $70,000 The remaining communities which applied for funding have been referred to the Cuyahoga County Land Reutilization Corporation to address their specific needs. August 6, 201212 yr This one was kind of interesting. McDonald’s on Euclid Avenue in Willoughby. Operating early last week, perhaps as late as Wednesday. Fenced off Thursday. Demolished Friday (as in the building was there when I went past on the way to work, nearly gone on my way home). Still fenced off and the Golden Arches sign is still there. My guess is they are building a new one.
