October 29, 200915 yr The initial plans for this site...(the ones that are now either permanently scaled down, or put on the back-burner...which it will be, will depend on the economy) would've greatly affected something over here at CWRU. That's why we know / care about this. The pkg lot was supposed to be a very temporary thing. Now? At this exact moment in time? Maybe the pkg lot will hang around a little longer than expected
October 29, 200915 yr Of course I care about this differently than the average person, because I prefer, obviously, not to see the initial plans come to fruition...But as a UOer I also do not want that to be a pkg lot. I want the OCPM Building back
October 29, 200915 yr ^Well apparently the Clinic was hiding this from the public as I specifically recall the spokesman for the Clinic (at the time the demolition was publicize) saying that they had no current plans for the corner (this was not too long ago), but they were going to use it as a "pretty" parking lot (lot of nice landscaping...thanks) and hold it for future development.

Thats also how it was sold to design review, for demolition approval (frankly there would have been less resistance (what little there was) if there were plans disclosed to them) Clueless, something to do with the medical school partner?
October 29, 200915 yr Here: http://www.medcitynews.com/index.php/2009/10/cleveland-clinic-laboratories-loses-leader-gains-revised-plan/
October 29, 200915 yr What is the EE Building? Are you sure they are not referring to the southwest corner of the intersection? There is a parking lot there and a small building next to the parking garage. This article is from early October and states they were moving people out the building currently and would start demo after that was completed. The demo at the northwest corner was already in progress at that time.
October 29, 200915 yr Here: http://www.medcitynews.com/index.php/2009/10/cleveland-clinic-laboratories-loses-leader-gains-revised-plan/ Same intersection for sure, but are you sure they are talking about the same parcel? From the article - “The EE building is there now. We are relocating individuals in that building,” which would be razed to make way for the lab.
October 29, 200915 yr Yeah, on the clinic map it has EE on the south-west corner of that intersection.
October 29, 200915 yr I am reading this link at the same time as all of you. It was referred to me at work by someone who is "less-anecdotal". I usually don't bother him but. I think I will have to investigate this a little more. I do know that their plans for a reference lab structure were much more grandiose than is stated. This news release makes it seem the opposite. So I don't know what to think of that. Could just be some sort of spin on the subject. I will have to see if the concern for the site is warranted. :-)

November 3, 200915 yr The Reference Lab was planned for the NE corner of Cedar/E.105 and is now up in the air. For all I know, the EE building location at the SW corner of Carnegie/E.105 is the new spot. The OCPM/Carnegie Medical Building was not under consideration to my knowledge. Keep in mind, as well, that the Opportunity Corridor will be hitting the Circle here and the landscape could change somewhat significantly as a result.
November 3, 200915 yr Yes I was just at a mtg. and talked with people who would know a little on this subject. As far as anyone knows , the jury is still out on this. Considering they've lost the leader for this laboratory and there is "no firm groundbreaking" timetable...that would mean that the project (whatever project---revised or not) for the E. 105th & Carnegie area is very tenuous right now. The O.Corridor ...I don't know about that....that's years away. If that's what this land will be used for, then there will be pkg lots around E. 105th & Carnegie for a while in some fashion or another. Hope I'm wrong.

December 21, 200915 yr ^Crap. Thanks MayDay. Serious bummer to see the scrubbing of midtown of all past continue.
December 21, 200915 yr That's a nice building :( Would have been nice if they could have found a way to renovate it instead of tearing it down.
December 22, 200915 yr It appears as though city planners, etc. have drawn a line in the sand. It seems like there is a concerted effort to preserve and restore stuctures from the river to approximately E. 55th St. A lot of that is evidenced by the ongoing and future restoration plans for Lower Euclid/E.4th/Prospect. And, for the most part, CSU and the closer-in part of Midtown. Then it seems like there's a vast area between E. 55th and E. 105th that is fair game for demolition (the larger part of Midtown). THis area includes all these available parcels (we can knock it down for you and make it available) for companies/hospitals and also a carte blanche check for anything that the Cleveland Clinic wants to do. Then there seems to be a relatively favorable attitude towards preservation between E. 105th and stretching possibly into historic East Cleveland. With sensitive infill to enhance the University Circle neighborhood. Maybe I'm just speaking the obvious but it helps me accept things like this E.97th demolition better. Even though it really is inexcusable.
December 22, 200915 yr Amazing. December 22, 200915 yr WTF is the matter with these guys? ? ? ? Are they so devoid of soul and creativity that they cannot see the value in these structures that makes the pains of finding an appropriate re-use worthwhile?? Geez, why don't we just starting killing retired people instead of putting them in assisted living? That's what I equate this to. The only difference is that buildings last longer than people -- except when they're near the Cleveland Clinic or in Midtown. Otherwise they're fucked!! It's time for a DEFEND MIDTOWN! campaign -- I will be glad to help take a leadership role. December 22, 200915 yr City Planners don't have nearly the clout you're assigning to them, Clueless. It is private entities that are making these decisions that you see- The Clinic, MRN, and others according to their interpretations of their needs and/or the market's abilities to absorb certain products- rehabbed historic lofts, hospital space, single story new construction light industry, etc.
December 22, 200915 yr OK, does anyone know for a fact this area is definitely a demo? i ve been driving past this area for months now with work, and it looks like too much effort for just a demo, it appears to me as though they are completely stripping the building for a re-use, i cant believe they would put this much time and money into a demo. Considering the area, i would hate to see the architecture go, but with the placement of the building and the amount of surface lot surrounding it, i cant say that its demise would be a bad thing if, as long as it it gave way to a more urban friendly structure(s)
December 22, 200915 yr I certainly don't know for sure but was told about a year ago by a clinic employee who worked in this particular building that her department was moving out to a Clinic building in Beachwood and that after the building was vacant it was to be torn down. It does appear that they are doing much "work" around the fenced off building but this might just be asbestos abatement which is required before demo. I note that Precision Environmental is on site. I believe they did the prep work before the Howard Johonsons on 55th was demoed.

It is private entities that are making these decisions that you see- The Clinic, MRN, and others according to their interpretations of their needs and/or the market's abilities to absorb certain products- rehabbed historic lofts, hospital space, single story new construction light industry, etc. The one tool the city does have is landmarkiing, and this building certainly seemed eligible But I've heard from an informed source that as a matter of policy, the city won't do anything to impede the Clinic's plans ever because it is one of the few large scale economic bright spots. I can't totally disagree with that view either. It's just a major bummer that the Clinic couldn't find a viable use for this building. To me it's a bigger loss than the Playhouse would (will?) be because of its visibility, siting and materials.
December 22, 200915 yr I got a glance---and I mean a quick glance---yesterday driving past the intersection of 105th & Carnegie and it looks like they're putting the finishing touches on the surface pkg lot where the Art deco OCPM stood just a couple months ago. I know the usage of that land was not initially intended for this. And I know the CCF needs parking. But what Cleveland doesn't need is more surface parking! And especially to lose a gem of a building.

December 24, 200915 yr I don't know that there has ever been an entity that I have loved and loathed all at the same time, as much as the Cleveland Clinic.
December 27, 200915 yr  I know what you mean. I hate the outward appearances of their structures and how they place them on the landscape. Very cold, inward and isolationist with respect to their surroundings. But what goes on inside those buildings is awe inspiring in terms of their innovation, growth abilities, etc. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

February 15, 201015 yr I was talking to somebody at the City about this demo the other week. The basic response was that the CCF has pretty much free reign to do what it wants as far as the City is concerned. Not that the City likes demos like this, but the Clinic is just too important of an economic engine in the City for City Hall to take any issue with the CCF's vision for its UC/Midtown campus.
February 15, 201015 yr Funny, I just passed by the site about an hour ago and was going to post regarding it...have been watching the demo for about two weeks now and as it progressed noticed that it will be more than half the block. I don't believe the Clinic has any plans for the site currently so I am assuming this is going to be surface parking. Can anybody confirm? If so it is really going to look bad (ok what surface parking in a city looks good) no matter how they pretty it up. By the way also noticed the buildings are coming down for the state hospital down the street.

March 13, 201015 yr A nice write-up by Litt of the gap in design review and demo review for the Clinic's main campus, triggered by the recent demo of the beautiful old HB campus. The quotes in the article by Clinic officials make it seem as if they might have altered their plans had their been objections, but I wonder how open minded they really were. IMHO, the HB demo is far worse than the possible (likely?) demo of the PlayHouse complex, which has almost zero street presence. The Clinic's master planning on its main campus has been pretty ghastly, so hopefully we do see a design review district there soon. In any case, I look forward to seeing what the new master planning work comes up with. http://blog.cleveland.com/architecture/2010/03/cleveland_clinics_razing_of_fo.html
March 13, 201015 yr This article pissed me off. The jist of the article is that most of the Clinic falls in a zone that isn’t covered by either design review districts.. "The Clinic's main campus sits in a gap between the design review districts created for Midtown in 1995 and University Circle in 2007." (well maybe consider expanding the University circle or midtown one..?). But the city isn’t exactly interested in that, since they don’t really care about historic preservation or old buildings. More of the disturbing statements: “He said that before seeking a demolition permit, he contacted the city's planning department and the nonprofit Fairfax Renaissance Development Corp., a community development organization with which the Clinic works closely. No objections came up, and the Clinic hasn't received complaints, he said.” So neither the local Community Development Corporation or the City Planning Department had anything to say about it... "The gap in city review authority over demolitions in the Clinic zone has gone largely unnoticed. When asked about it, City Councilwoman Mamie Mitchell, who’s Ward 6 includes most of the Clinic, said she was "shocked" to learn of it." Wow she had no idea…! Its always helpful when everyones clueless "Andrea Taylor, press secretary for Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson, said in several e-mails that the city would not impose a design review district but would be open if it were proposed by stakeholders or City Council representatives in the Clinic area." The clearly just has no concern about this sort of stuff, its only history... and architecture!
May 5, 201015 yr Anyone know if we're losing any historic buildings?? Cleveland school district places 25 buildings on demolition list By Thomas Ott, The Plain Dealer May 05, 2010, 9:25AM CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Cleveland schools will add to a stockpile of closed buildings this summer, then go on a demolition spree. The district intends to level 25 buildings, including 13 of the 16 schools set to close in June, according to a plan released this week. The downsizing is part of the district's attempt to erase a $53 million deficit. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2010/05/cleveland_school_district_want.html

May 6, 201015 yr For being so broke they sure seem to have a lot of money for demo. That must be several million dollars worth of demo they're planning.
May 6, 201015 yr This city will have no history. And this idea of not paying for anything but new...just reflects a culture that has a mindset that sprawl and new growth beyond the core should always be rewarded. Yes, but they're only tearing down the part that is vacant (the more beautiful part by far, in my opinion). The part that is still being actively used will remain. Move your arrow two spots to the right (north) to get a better idea of the breadth of the part that's getting demolished and a couple more to see how, with a little love, this could be a beautiful courtyard and residential rehab just down from W. 78th St. Studios and a few blocks south of Battery Park. Instead, if this plan goes through, we'll have a better view of the godawful ugly add-on and a giant vacant parcel fronting Detroit.
