December 16, 201113 yr Another unique donation I seemed to have missed before: World War II aviator and nurse Dorothy Ebersbach gives CWRU $2 million for flight nurse program Published: Thursday, December 08, 2011, 6:26 AM Updated: Thursday, December 08, 2011, 9:07 AM Karen Farkas, The Plain Dealer By Karen Farkas, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- An aviator who served in the Women Airforce Service Pilots during World War II, then spent her career as a nurse, has donated $2 million to a Case Western Reserve University program that encompasses both of her passions -- flight nursing. The Dorothy Ebersbach Academic Center for Flight Nursing will be established at the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing, where Ebersbach earned a nursing degree in 1954. She died last month at 96. The center will expand the Advanced Practice Flight Nurse Program's mission of training graduate-level nursing students to provide on-site care during emergencies and transport to medical facilities. She worked for her father's construction company in Tampa, Fla., a job that required her to learn how to fly an airplane. She earned a commercial pilot's license at the University of Tampa. After the United States entered World War II, she applied to and was selected to be a member of the Women Airforce Service Pilots, or WASPs. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2011/12/case_western_reserve_universit_30.html

January 10, 201213 yr CWRU to establish on-campus response team: Higher Education Published: Tuesday, January 10, 2012, 7:55 AM Karen Farkas, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio - Case Western Reserve University is establishing an on-campus Community Emergency Response Team. Response teams, which have been created in several cities and counties in Northeast Ohio, and at Cleveland State University, are small groups of volunteers trained to serve as auxiliary first-responders during disasters. CWRU received a $568,090 grant from the U.S. Department of Education Safe and Drug Free Schools, Emergency Management for Higher Education program in 2010. The CWRU team will include up to 50 employees, who are currently being recruited. According to the university, those accepted into the program will learn about fire safety, hazardous material, terrorist incidents, search and rescue and disaster medical services. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2012/01/case_western_reserve_universit_31.html
January 12, 201213 yr Babs is a babe: Power 100: Barbara Snyder By Jennifer Keirn Snyder is building support for the strategic plan the university launched soon after she assumed the presidency in 2007. The plan, which runs through 2013, sets high goals for CWRU’s future — greater selectivity in admissions, more interdisciplinary cooperation, more focus on international student and faculty exchanges and a $1 billion capital campaign to fund scholarships, research and new faculty hires. “What I have as the president of CWRU is the power of persuasion,” Snyder says. “Our success depends on our ability and my ability to persuade people that the work is important and that the university is worth their investment.” The plan is a vision for the future, but it’s also a roadmap to CWRU’s recovery. Snyder arrived five years ago at a university in crisis, where she was the sixth president (including interims) to serve in less than a decade. http://ibmag.com/Main/Archive/Power_100_Barbara_Snyder_12057.aspx

February 10, 201213 yr Word on campus is that clinical trials on humans will begin in the next few weeks -- they are further ahead than most people think. Case Western Reserve University researchers use skin cancer drug to reverse Alzheimer's symptoms in mice Published: Thursday, February 09, 2012, 6:00 PM Updated: Friday, February 10, 2012, 8:54 AM Brie Zeltner, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Case Western Reserve University researchers have found what may be a new treatment for early-stage Alzheimer's disease. The drug rapidly clears out the sticky plaques that build up in the brains of those with the disease and improves memory and thinking. But they caution that their stunning results -- total plaque clearance and symptom improvement in a short 72 hours -- need to be put in perspective: They've only tested the drug -- an already approved cancer medication called bexarotene -- in mice. It may be years before the treatment is ready for people, if it proves to work the same way in human trials. Alzheimer's disease, the most common cause of dementia, affects 5.4 million Americans and is newly diagnosed every 69 seconds, according to the Alzheimer's Association. There is no cure, and the few available treatments do nothing to stop its progression. http://www.cleveland.com/healthfit/index.ssf/2012/02/case_western_reserve_universit_5.html

February 27, 201213 yr More donations today for CWRU: University announces more than $11 million in gifts for engineering school Posted: February 27th, 2012 | Author: thedaily | Filed under: news | No Comments » A $5 million commitment to Case Western Reserve University’s Think[box] program is among more than $11 million in gifts for the Case School of Engineering announced during this weekend’s Board of Trustees meeting. Trustee Larry Sears and his wife, Sally Zlotnick Sears, made their $5 million pledge this month as a challenge to inspire additional support for Think[box], an initiative to encourage creativity, invention, and commercialization of technology. Its goal is to build a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship through experiential education, project-based learning, and broad-ranging collaboration. “The generosity of Larry and Sally Sears will help us realize the university’s long-term ambitions for Think[box],” said Gary Wnek, the Joseph F. Toot Jr. Professor of Engineering and the faculty director of Think[box]. “We expect that this program will lead to the creation of products, companies and, ultimately, jobs. It truly is a unique opportunity for innovators and entrepreneurs from a variety of disciplines to bring their ideas to life.” The School of Engineering also received $6 million in pledges for scholarships and programs. That announcement includes a $4.5 million anonymous gift from a Case Institute of Technology (CIT) alumnus for student scholarships, a separate $500,000 commitment for Think[box], and a series of other gifts totaling $1 million dollars for scholarship and academic programs focused at the Case School of Engineering. http://thedaily.case.edu/news/?p=5757
March 13, 201213 yr Graduate school rankings were released last night. Some good, some blah for CWRU. + means better. Social Work: 9 (unchanged) Weatherhead MBA: 52 (+28) (That's up 28 spots (!) - but not entirely shocking since other publications rank Weatherhead around 40, and USNews was the outlier for whatever reason) Law: 67 (-6) Law subcategories: Health Law: 8 (+?) International Law: 11 (+5) Clinical Training (first time ranked!): 23 IP Law (first time ranked): 24 Medical: 24 Medical Subcategories: Primary Care: 35 (+20) Family: 12 Pediatrics: 16 Engineering: 47 Biomedical: 10 Nursing School: 15
March 13, 201213 yr ^ As a law student, not surprised at the drop. I am surprised it wasn't worse, frankly, given how absolutely hammered this school has gotten in terms of LSAT competitiveness. The median is now 158 (I think it was 159 last year, and 160 in my year), and the 25th percentile is 153, meaning the school had to accept a number of lower scores just to fill its class. Applications were down nationally, so Case actually didn't get as hammered as it could have. It's nice to see the specialties recognized - the school markets them pretty aggressively. I hear they're absolutely carpet-bombing scholarships to get the LSAT up, but we'll see what happens. Ohio law schools all fell this year. OSU fell 4, to 39, and Cinci fell 8, to 69. Akron ranks 119, Toledo 129, Cleveland-Marshall 135. Dayton, Ohio Northern, and Capital are unranked.
March 13, 201213 yr Surprised the engineering program is not more highly rated. I always thought that was Case's strength outside of its medical school. The law school needs to ease up on their "clinical training" and give their students more time to work in the field while in school.
March 13, 201213 yr My fiance graduated this spring from Case's social work program and the Social Work ranking was #9 when she was there as well.

The law school needs to ease up on their "clinical training" and give their students more time to work in the field while in school. I agree - but there are a lot of us who do paid part-time work rather than clinics; the clinics aren't mandatory. In fact, they're discussing lessening some of the 'required' classes to give us more flexibility. Several of the clinic professors are really outstanding - it gives the school a chance to employ experienced lawyers who don't fit on the tenure/publish-or-perish track.
March 24, 201213 yr Great initiative happening at CWRU ro spur initiate, creativity, and business: Case Western Reserve University opens high tech workshop for students, faculty and staff Published: Saturday, March 24, 2012, 12:00 PM By Karen Farkas, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio - Case Western Reserve University has created a high-tech playground for students to design and develop prototypes that may one day be produced commercially. The think[box] includes $500,000 in equipment, including a circuit board printer, a computer-controlled table router that cuts a sheet of wood or plastic and a 3-D printer that can create plastic pieces with moving parts. It is open to faculty, staff and students from all university departments and other institutions in University Circle. Most importantly, it encourages them to collaborate. http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2012/03/case_western_reserve_universit.html

May 7, 201213 yr It seems the future is bright for Case Western -- the most qualified incoming freshmen class in school history: CWRU sets enrollment records, welcomes most diverse, academically accomplished class in history Posted: May 4th, 2012 | Author: thedaily | Filed under: news | 3 Comments » President Barbara R. Snyder announced today that the first-year students who arrive this fall will be part of Case Western Reserve’s largest, most diverse and most academically accomplished class in history. Based on deposits as of May 1, the university expects to enroll at least 1,350 students—about 180 more than the previous record class, which enrolled in 2005. More than 12 percent come from underrepresented minority groups. Finally, the group that arrives in August will have SAT scores at the 25th and 75th percentiles of 1280 and 1450. A perfect score for the SAT critical reading and math portions is 1600. “These results are a credit to our faculty, staff, alumni and current students, all of whom came together to show young people and their parents what an extraordinary place Case Western Reserve is,” President Snyder said. “We have a great story to tell, and each year we have done a more effective job of conveying it to prospective students.” The class also is more geographically diverse. Nearly three quarters of the students who arrive in August will come from out of state. In 2007, that figure was about half. In addition, about 80 students will come to Cleveland from other countries. http://thedaily.case.edu/news/?p=7425

July 2, 201212 yr White House highlights CWRU broadband initiative posted Jun 14, 2012 6:32 AM by Kristen Kolenz WASHINGTON, D.C. – Case Western Reserve University’s efforts to provide high-speed internet access to residents near campus won White House recognition and a $300,000 federal grant today. The news came as President Obama signed an Executive Order to make broadband construction involving federal property – including roadways and buildings – 90 percent less expensive. The President also announced US Ignite, a partnership to promote new applications that use broadband connectivity in health care, education and other fields. Case Western Reserve is one of 60 research universities involved in the coalition, which also includes government agencies and businesses, among other organizations. “CWRU is the acknowledged leader around the country in the innovative use of advanced technology that advances both research and the community's priorities on topics such as health and wellness, science education, neighborhood safety, and energy management,” said Lev Gonick, Vice President for Information Technology Services and Chief Information Officer. Two years ago the university led the launch of the Case Connection Zone, an initiative that connected just over 100 residents near campus to ultra-high speed broadband via Gigabit fiber. August 12, 201212 yr NIH Awards $64.6M Grant to Case Western Reserve, Largest Ever in Northeast Ohio Contacts: Kevin Mayhood Liz Lear CLEVELAND – August 10, 2012 – Case Western Reserve University's ambitious collaboration to bring medical discoveries to patients has won an extraordinary endorsement: a $64.6 million federal grant that is the largest ever awarded in Northeast Ohio. "Five years ago Cleveland's leading biomedical institutions came together in an unprecedented partnership that put improved health at the center of everything we do," said School of Medicine dean Pamela B. Davis, MD, PhD, the grant's principal investigator. "With today's award, the National Institutes of Health sent a powerful message to all of us: Keep up the good work." Known formally as a Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA), the grant exists to advance efforts among scientists and physicians to take promising breakthroughs out of laboratories and into hospitals, clinics and doctor's offices – that is, to where innovations directly benefit those who most need lifesaving treatments. National Institutes of Health (NIH) leaders launched the CTSA program six years ago to accelerate the transition of research ideas to medical applications; today Case Western Reserve is one of 61 lead institutions across the country fostering this pioneering work with hospitals and other health care partners. In this region, the alliance includes Cleveland Clinic, MetroHealth System, University Hospitals Case Medical Center and Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center. Richard A. Rudick, MD, vice chair of the Neurological Institute at Cleveland Clinic, serves as the effort's co-principal investigator. In 2007, the proposal he and Davis authored won $64 million from the NIH, which at the time was the single largest federal research award to the region. "The purpose of this new federal grant model is to push institutions to focus ever more squarely on tangible impacts to individuals and society," said Case Western Reserve president Barbara R. Snyder. "We are pleased that the NIH recognized the remarkable efforts across all of our major partners and the individuals within institutions and community organizations. Together, we all are committed to make even greater progress over the next five years." http://casemed.case.edu/newsroom/news/announcement/
August 29, 201212 yr Case Western Reserve stays atop the "For Good" rankings of national universities: Case Western Reserve University ranks No. 7 in national magazine's list of top universities Posted: 08/28/2012 Last Updated: 7 hours and 23 minutes ago By: Carrie Nagorka, newsnet5.com CLEVELAND - Case Western Reserve University remained in the national top 10 this year in Washington Monthly's annual rankings of colleges that contribute to the best interests of students and the country. Last year marked the first time the university broke into the magazine's highest tier, leaping from 17th to seventh. For 2012, Case Western Reserve stayed in the same spot, while institutions such as Harvard and the University of Michigan fell out of the top 10. Also this year, Stanford University moved from fourth to third, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill jumped from 12th to fourth. Washington Monthly's ratings focus on three primary criteria: research excellence, social mobility of students, and campus commitment to service. Case Western Reserve's data placed it particularly high in service-related categories. September 13, 201212 yr I think CWRU was expecting to move up more with the launch of the $1 Billion fundraising campaign, most accomplished freshman class ever, and highest percent jump in applications. Nonetheless: Case Western Reserve climbs to 37th in U.S. News’ Best Colleges 2013 rankings Posted: September 12th, 2012 | Author: thedaily | Filed under: accolades, news | No Comments » Case Western Reserve University moved up another position to 37th among national universities in U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges 2013 Edition. The increase comes after last-year’s three-slot jump and reflects the institution’s continued progress in admissions, alumni engagement and overall academic reputation. “Our board, faculty, staff, students, graduates and other supporters all play a part in these improvements,” President Barbara R. Snyder said. “Thanks to extraordinary efforts by all of these individuals, our campus is gaining increasing recognition across the country.” After earning recognition as one of The Huffington Post’s top nine “trendiest” colleges and The Washington Monthly’s top 10 schools that contribute to the common good, Case Western Reserve this year set its third straight-record for an all-time high of applicants. At nearly 14,800, the figure more than doubles the total applicants from five years earlier (7,280). In addition, the class admitted this year represents the single largest, most diverse, and most academically qualified in the institution’s history. It includes 74 valedictorians, 42 salutatorians and 65 National Merit Finalists, as well as young people who have won national athletic championships, performed at Carnegie Hall and the Hollywood Bowl, penned a 50,000-word novel and invented a touchscreen technology for Braille that has a patent pending. http://thedaily.case.edu/news/?p=9823
