Early Action applications up 50 percent over last year

Case Western Reserve continued to see surging interest among high school seniors this fall, attracting 50 percent more Early Action applications than in 2012.

The significant jump follows a record-setting year for overall applications—early and regular—for the class that entered this past August. It also maintains a trend of dramatic annual increases that began to accelerate in 2009.

In 2012-2013, the university received more than 18,000 applications, a total that marked growth of 150 percent over the past five years—and 25 percent over the previous year. This fall, 8,872 individuals applied Early Action, nearly 900 more than the grand total—early and regular admission—five years earlier.

This is awesome, but I seriously have no idea where they're going to put all of these people!  And I'm unfortunately not far enough out of Case to be able to fund a dorm yet :).

This doesn't necessarily mean that they're going to have more students. With more apps Case can now be more selective in who it admits, thus lowering the acceptance rate. Then their ranking goes up. All good things for Case and Cleveland.

Purely out of curiosity, how many alumni do we have here?

I know of Murray Hill, Doc, and myself....

Right here

Me, my mom and my sister all worked there. My Mom retired from there about 3 years ago. So we kind of half count? ;)

Don't the kids of employees get free tuition?

I'm Case alum (2001) as well as a current student

Undergrad 1980, Grad School 83, part-time faculty in late 80's.

I started as Class of '84 and actually graduated in 1985, so we sort of overlapped.

They've been doing both the last couple years - getting more applications and enrolling more students.  The undergrads I've talked to complain a lot about the housing situation.  I am certainly happy about the need to increase selectivity regardless!

By the way, I'm BSE 2006, MSE 2007, Ph.D. 2011.

What's your PhD docta?

I think it's technically Macromolecular Science (aka Polymer Science).

This had me thinking, so I thought id have some fun and try out my own design. I thought East 114th should be extended to Adelbert, with Townhouses along the northern end.

Nice job!! I like it. Good density. Good greenspace for the students. Some market-rate hate for regular people. And I assume some street-level retail along Murray Hill, I assume?

BTW, the north end of an extended East 114th near Adelbert should probably be one-way southbound unless you envision a traffic light at Adelbert as it might be difficult to make turns onto Adelbert to due to limited visibility because of the curve in one direction and the bridge abutments in the other. A traffic light might not be a bad thing anyway as it would slow down traffic in what would be an even more pedestrian-trafficked setting.

That's what they called it in my era.  At the time, we were neighbors (mine, then, was called Metallurgy and Materials Science)

Metal and ceramics were grouped together, plastic was separate.  Ironically, I've worked in the metals and plastics industries, but not ceramics.

Woo materials people!

People do find it weird to them when I have to explain that the Materials Science and Engineering department at Case is just metals and ceramics, not polymers.

And yeah, depending on what degree you get from the Macro department, it's called something different.  I believe the B.S.E. is Polymer Science and Engineering, the M.S.E. is Macromolecular Science and Engineering, and the Ph.D. is just Macromolecular Science for whatever reason.

Case Western Reserve University receives $1 million for think[box] expansion

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Case Western Reserve University was awarded a $1 million grant from the Burton D. Morgan Foundation to create space for programs to provide mentoring, resources and advice to student entrepreneurs.

The Burton D. Morgan Suite for Entrepreneurship will be built in CWRU's new think[box] innovation and entrepreneurship center. It will include Blackstone LaunchPad and the Intellectual Property Venture Clinic, two CWRU programs supported by the foundation.

CWRU last fall began a $35 million renovation of a seven-story former cold storage building on campus, which will allow the current think[box] to expand from 4,500 square feet to 50,000 square feet.

Cleveland Clinic, Case Western Reserve University to launch health care-focused executive MBA degree

Cleveland Clinic and Case Western Reserve University continue to deepen their relationship, having just announced the two will launch this fall a new health care-focused executive master of business administration degree.

The Cleveland Clinic-Weatherhead Executive MBA’s curriculum aims to address the growing need for senior-level administrators, physicians and other health care professionals to be prepared for an evolving, complex industry, according to a news release. The degree program is also an option for senior managers in other fields looking for a career in health care.

The 20-month academic program launches this September. Classroom sessions will take place at both Case’s Weatherhead School and the Cleveland Clinic campus. The Clinic and Case said the distinction of their joint degree from others stems from a combination of specialty courses in health care strategy and economics, as well as who is teaching those courses: Weatherhead’s faculty and leaders from the Clinic.

I hear some of those people in the togas aren't real Greeks, too.

I wonder how students these days would have reacted to "Greek Week" during the early 1980s.  Specifically the beer related events.

The world has changed, and thin skin is something this generation prides itself over. Jesus wept.

Russo brothers to host 'Captain America: Civil War' screening at Case Western Reserve

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Joe and Anthony Russo will host a special screening of "Captain America: Civil War" at Case Western Reserve University on Monday, May 2.

The screening will take place at the Milton and Tamar Maltz Performing Arts Center at The Temple-Tifereth Israel.

"Civil War," which opens May 6, marks the Russo Brothers biggest film yet. The Marvel Studios production will likely be the biggest box office hit of 2016 and lead into the directing duo's follow-ups: "Avengers: Infinity War Parts I & II" (out in 2018 and 2019).

The Russo brothers graduated from Case Western Reserve before producing their first feature in 1997. The brothers went on to earn an Emmy for their work on "Arrested Development" before directing films such as 2014's "Captain America: The Winter Soldier."

The screening will serve as a fundraiser for Phase Two of the Maltz Performing Arts Center renovation and help raise awareness of the facility.

Well as crazy as the stipulations sound, this should still allow 98% of Case Western Reserve students to be eligible for tomorrow night's football home opener :)

CWRU Students Have a Chance to Kick for $25,000 at Halftime on Saturday

The Case Western Reserve University Department of Physical Education and Athletics and the Department of Student Affairs will be sponsoring an opportunity for one Case Western Reserve student to win $25,000 at halftime of the football team's home opening game against Grove City College on Saturday, September 16th at 7:00 p.m. at DiSanto Field.

A CWRU student drawn at random will have a chance to kick a 45-yard field goal on Saturday.  Should the student make the kick, they will win the $25,000 prize.

Case Western Reserve fundraising tops $1.5 billion goal

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Case Western Reserve University has reached a $1.5 billion fundraising goal a year ahead of schedule thanks to donations and pledges over six years from nearly 55,000 individuals and organizations.

"Remember, we are not finished yet," CWRU President Barbara R. Snyder said during a homecoming event Thursday night, according to a news release from the school.

"The generosity of Case Western Reserve's alumni and friends is absolutely astounding -- and deeply humbling," Snyder said. "It is also a testament to the inspiring teaching and research of our faculty, and immense talent and promise of our students."

The initial goal for CWRU's "Forward Thinking" campaign was $1 billion. That goal was reached in 2014 after 30 months. The university then raised the goal to $1.5 billion with a target date of 2018.

Though the campaign will continue, a new goal has not been set.

I think we're starting to see the synergy between CWRU and CC now that they've geographically more or less merged.  The potential could be seen over thirty years ago, but there was political opposition then.  The Opportunity Corridor completion may cement that further.

Case Western Reserve law school has figured out something out (at least in the short term) going to #1 in Ohio for passing the bar:

Case Western Reserve University law school's bar-passage rate tops in Ohio

Updated on Oct 30, 2017 at 12:23 PM EDT

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Case Western Reserve University is crediting the overhaul of its law school curriculum for 93 percent of graduates passing Ohio's bar exam.

https://articles.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2017/10/case_western_reserve_universit_87.amp

Amazing-- teach what's on the test and people can pass it.  Previously they didn't.  It's mind boggling.  This was an issue for most law schools, not just Case.  Countless times I would raise my hand after a lecture and ask what the actual Ohio law was, and the prof didn't know or care.  And this was at a state school where the overwhelming majority of grads would be practicing in Ohio.

Another change Case made was making more of their exams closed book, since that's how the bar exam works.  Well... yeah, good idea, why weren't you doing that all along?

I am a student at the law school now and did my undergrad at Ohio State. Very rarely have I ever been excited that OSU is in second place.

CWRU among the best in the country for commercialization of research

Oct 31, 2017

Case Western Reserve ranked 13th in the country—ahead of Harvard, Georgia Tech, and the University of Chicago—in a new study of research universities’ effectiveness in translating research breakthroughs into commercial success.

“This result is a testament to the dedication and creativity of our faculty, as well as the efforts of our Technology Transfer Office and leadership of Vice President for Research Suzanne Rivera,” President Barbara R. Snyder said. “I congratulate them all, and look forward to still more innovation that benefits our world.”

The Brookings Institution’s “Hidden in plain sight: The oversized impact of downtown universities” finds that leading higher education institutions located within major metropolitan areas dramatically outpace suburban and rural peers in research-related economic activity. On average, these research universities create 71 percent more start-ups and complete 80 percent more licensing agreements, among other metrics. Rockefeller University, a New York City-based institution focused on biomedical research, ranked first overall and in every category, with MIT and Columbia respectively second and third overall.

Meanwhile, Case Western Reserve ranked 13th overall, but stood at sixth for its number of patents per 1,000 students, at 4.1. Its licensing deals (2.7) and new businesses per 1,000 students (0.4) each ranked 13th, while it fell to 26th for licensing income per student, at $155. Overall, Harvard was 15th, Georgia Tech 14th and the University of Chicago 22nd.
