Alrighty, it was one heck of a hot day but thankfully Tremont has plenty of spots to duck into to get out of the heat. One special treat this time around - I've always wanted to see the inside of St. Theodosius Russian Orthodox Cathedral and they were open.

Some apropos music for the first dozen or so photos:

I live about a mile from the center of all the action, so the first stop is the tried and true (and wonderfully air conditioned) P.L.A.V. Post 58. Love this place for many reasons - and the cheap beer isn't even on the top of the list!

Gentlemen, thank you for your service:

Alright, out onto Professor to grab some food. A few empanadas, a shredded papaya salad, pierogis and avocado/chicken salad later, it was time to duck out of the heat again. This time, St. John Cantius church (on the left):

The steps of the church serve as impromptu bleacher seating:

I remember when Tremont had maybe a handful of notable eateries; now there are a few dozen.

Iron Chef Michael Symon (and others) put in a lot of hard work:

It was a scorcher (I think temps in the low 90s and humidity) but that didn't keep the crowds away:

We decided to hike south to Starkweather - some new infill going in here:

And across the street, St. Theodosius - built in 1911, was featured prominently in the movie "The Deer Hunter" with Robert DeNiro and Meryl Streep:

Fantastic photos, as always. Thanks for sharing!

Great thread. It's hard to imagine the hours spent by the most skilled craftsmen to decorate St. Theodosius, even after the marvelous structure was complete. And Polish enclaves usually are good for eye candy, regardless of one's preference.  :-)

I felt a little burning in my face looking at those church photos.

It was, as always, a joy to see you and yours. Great photos!

MayDay went inside, not one, but three churches in one day and did not immediately burst into flames?!  :wtf:

Lawd!

Great pics pumpkin!

Fantastic pics. I've never been in any of those churches. Now I feel like I have. Thank you. I was going to make the short trip but I didn't think the two year old could handle the heat.

He's a flamer only when he's outside of the churches. But anyway......!

Seriously, those are fantastic photos of St. Theodosius. And I love the neighborhood/crowd shots. It's awesome that so many people turn out for Cleveland's neighborhood festivals. To me it shows this is still a city that celebrates its neighborhoods, or at least some of them.

EDIT: I'm surprised St. Theodosius isn't making more noise about this being their 100th anniversary. I would have expected more tours, more fundraisers, and more media attention. I think many of us know next year is the West Side Market's 100th anniversary, but how many people know this is St. Theodosius'?

Beautiful photos.  Tremont looks like a wonderful area.  St  Theodosius has an unbelievable interior, which is completely unexpected.  I always wanted to take a peak in there as well, having seen the outside many times as a kid when going to Cleveland.  The workmanship is amazing.

Cleveland never fails to impress.  Or maybe it's just your photography!

Excalibur photos!  I have to get over there and tour the area!
