Altoona tried the downtown mall thing in the 1970's with Station Mall; the dead mall was recently converted into a medical mall.

Most of the stuff on the right side of the street is now a 1970's housing tower

An example of collateral damage caused by government's use of taxpayers' money to cripple or destroy a private enterprise and the communities it sustained. Massive federal spending on construction and operation of interstate highways continues to subsidize the trucking companies in direct competition with railroads, using three to five times as much oil per ton-mile of freight hauled as part of the bargain.

The outdoor exhibits at the Railroaders' Museum look in desperate need of TLC, but the visitors' center at Horseshoe Curve and the viewing pavilion accessed via funicular are well worth a visit for anyone who likes to watch heavy trains working up the mountain.

Altoona shares a Roman Catholic diocese with Johnstown, and there's a second, less-imposing cathedral, St. John Gaulbert, at Johnstown.

You found the secret rowhouse street!

Great pics, Ink. Thanks! The city still has some decent architecture left.

I visited the Railroaders Museum in 1990 and it looks pretty sad nowadays, by comparison. I also visited that mall, and there wasn't much happening there, so I'm glad to see it's found new life.

Sigh , sadly thats what most of the Dense towns in PA look like there dying....being choked by the Suburbs / Sprawl.....

  • 1 year later...

Was wondering if a UOer had posted pix of Altoona....sure nuf....actually this place looks neat....these PA towns have a lot of good generic architecture (like those rowhouses and commercial buildings on the top two posts.

Altoona is on my itinerary for my upstate NY/PA road trip.  I was wondering about that Railroaders Museum...might be a chance to see a GG1, but wonder about the exhibits.

Rob, if yr reading this, thanks for the intel you posted on Horseshoe Curve as I was planning on driving up to that on my way to Johsntown, that and the Portage RR historic site.
