WOW! Thank you for this fabulous artistic rendering of Cincy--even back then it was a gem along the beautiful Ohio River.

That's sharp. It makes for a nice desktop. But is that considered a real map. It reminded me of the the Visionaries and Voices artist Courttney Cooper, who does these over-the-top pen drawings of the city. By hand I think.

^ They didn't make birds-eye photos back in the day. The Wright bros. didn't even do their first test flight until 1903. This is the era's equivalent of Google Maps satellite view. The perspective has to be distorted some in order to capture the most information (especially making the most streets viewable). Why not use the distortion as an opportunity to stylize a bit and make it look nice?

 

I don't believe there was much expectation for absolute precision on things like this in those days. Not even on official reference maps and whatnot.

 

Can't really say I know what you mean by "real map", anyhow. I don't think this was meant to be used for navigation (I don't even see street names).

That is phenomenal.  The guy also has 19th century maps for Columbus and Cleveland up, too (posted threads for them).  Very very cool.

Yeah, it used to go to Norfolk.  I emailed the guy yesterday about it and he fixed it.
