Interesting...

They plan to close Euclid and East Cleveland?? Where in the hell are people, especially transit dependent ones, in those areas supposed to go?

I guess I shouldn't be surprised about the Pearlbrook office closing.  They have a great painting of industrial Cleveland in there.

Not to mention the Glenville and UC post offices.  That means there are a lot of people who wont have access to a "local" post office.  I assume the people in UC, EC will be moved to the CH post office.  But where will people in Bratenahl, Eastern Hough, Forest Hills, Euclid Green and Parts of Collinwood go for their postal needs?

Euclid has another post office close to E. 250th and the marginal.  I'm assuming that the one in North Collinwood (44110) would be the one on E. 185th... I'm hoping that that particular post office stays.  Though the street still has a decent amount of businesses, the area has seen enough losses.

^I bet they will be doing the same thing they are doing today - continue to not go to the post office.

Surprised Isle St George even ever qualified to have a Post Office.  I don't think more than 10 people ever lived there at a time.

Looks like Cleveland is hit the hardest on this list, though there are quite a few C-bus and Dayton, too (and tons of rural places).  Question for Clevelanders--does it seem like there are excess post offices up there?

Umm no.

But the number of post office is not the issue, its postal business.  The Post office working with an antiquated business model.

People and corporations are using the postal service less and less.  The US Postal service was late to the game and for many years turned a blind eye to the increasing use of electronic mail.

I see a different slant to this list.  I think it shows how the USPS has become irrelevant to modern business.  If I understand the locations of the proposed offices, there are at least 3 in downtown Cleveland and a couple in the University Circle area.  These are two of the most promising areas for both business and population.

Yes but quantity of people, does not equate to volume for the USPS.  For example, our businesses have reduced USPS usage as more people want their magazines online or via mobile access.  USPS mail volume has decreased almost 30% in the last 5 years.  The majority of important online communication takes place through email, whether that be B2B, C2C or B2C.

In the past the USPS has kept postage rates down because they had corporate accounts, everyone - residential and corporate - had to use the USPS to mail a letter.  Fax machines put a small dent in the USPS, then external corporate email made a small dent, but the USPS laughed it off.  in the 90's AOL gave everyone an email address.  Now anyone has the capability to email and that has eaten into of USPS commercial business and residential postal business.

As the population of those who have never had the need to use a USPS building (I.E. my nephews generation), the need for a brick and mortal USPS buildings and mail carriers will decrease.

Question?  How many people have been to a post office building for business, more than one time, this year not including Tax season or Christmas?

^ I use the post office a lot when I sell old books on Amazon, since they have special "media mail" pricing for like $4.  I also prefer them for home delivery, since they have a key to the building and my mailbox.  I tend to live in ghettos and can't be having UPS or Fedex leave packages at my door.  I do think the post offices themselves are becoming less and less necessary, as a kiosk could handle any need I've ever had for a post office.

the post office was not slow to adapt, there is no place for them to adapt to digital communication. however, there will always be a need for the post office for packages and other paperwork delivery. they have a lot of competition for that and so there is nothing surprising in these cutbacks, which were long in coming.

looking to the future, despite the rise of the internet and increased privatization of deliverly services i do not think the post office should ever be dissolved entirely.

From:  Nine Ohio mail-processing centers will close

"USPS announced today that operations from Athens, Chillicothe, Dayton and Ironton will be moved to a Columbus facility.  Its Cleveland facility will handle processing previously done in Akron, Canton and Youngstown.  Steubenville’s processing operations will go to Pittsburgh.  The work from Toledo will be split among the Columbus facility and two in Michigan.  The Cincinnati processing center was spared.  The study found consolidating that work wouldn’t significantly boost efficiency or service."

I will miss getting a chuckle about mailing stuff to my friends down the street.  My neighborhood is split between the Akron and Cleveland processing centers.  So my mail would go: My house - local PO - Cleveland - Akron - Neighboring PO - house down the street

I don't see how this saves much money when fuel costs are going higher and higher.

Labor is often more expensive than fuel. The price of fuel would have to go much higher, which isn't impossible based on what the former CEO of Shell said here:
