Old Westland driving range on track for 286 homes and apartments

A former driving range and putt-putt course on Columbus' western edge soon be home to residential units.  Westerville-based Metro Development LLC, an affiliate of Donald R. Kenney & Company Realty, has been working for about a year to rezone the 41.6-acre former West Broad Golf Center at 5960 W. Broad Street.  The plan is to invest about $39 million into building 286 homes and apartments in the development, which it's calling Crown Pointe.

The developer plans to build an $18 million, 192-unit apartment complex on the southeastern 9 acres of the land, with 94 single-family homes on another 32.5 acres.  The homes will cost about $21 million and be completed by a homebuilder that has yet to be selected. About 12.5 acres of space will be retained as open space, according to plans filed with the city's development department.

The property is also within the Big Darby Accord Watershed Master Plan, which recommends mixed use for the site, but also includes some small portions of land that are in part of an environmental conservation zone, which stipulates restrictions on groundwater recharge and preservation of wooded space.  The developer has submitted a request for rezoning for the property for Columbus City Council but that has been tabled pending a few final details.

They seem to be completing the apartment section of this. No work on the housing part. They should just get the whole thing rezoned for apartments and finish it off-they can add more units total and we need more units. Plus who wants to buy a new house in this part of Prairie Township?  With rates like they are now? And Westland High School(as it is now)?

^ The above residential development - now called Sugar Farms and Renner South - has been approved by Columbus City Council.  More about it (and a current site plan) from Business First below:

1,100 homes greenlit on Columbus' western edge

Columbus City Council has approved construction of nearly 1,100 homes in a $300 million development on the city's western edge.  The council approved rezoning for 369 acres of land for the two developments – Sugar Farms and Renner South – along both sides of Renner Road, east of Alton Darby Creek Road and north of I-70.  Two developers, Harmony Development Group and PulteGroup Inc., are teaming up to build 1,098 houses and apartments on existing farm land.

The approval follows almost two years of work and negotiations between the developers, city and neighbors opposed to the project with traffic concerns as well as worries of how it will impact the Big Darby Creek watershed. ... The developer has had discussions with the Big Darby Accord Advisory Panel, the Columbus Development Commission and the Far West Side Area Commission, and made improvements based on input from those groups.  All but the area commission signed off on the project.

Changes included fewer lots near the existing Renner Road homes, lowering heights on some of the multi-family buildings, and preserving 170 acres of open space, including 81 acres for parkland that will be donated to the city. ... City Council approval lets the developers secure financing for the project to get started in early 2021 for a build-out over 8 to 10 years.  They must return with some final architectural renderings for the multifamily units, as well as some final clearances from the city.

This is the development at the corner of Renner and Alton & Darby, right? I was out that way visiting family last month for Xmas, and I couldn’t believe the size of this development.

Environmentalists say massive sewage system expansions threaten Big Darby watershed

"Madison County is asking for more than $127 million in loans through the state for a massive expansion of its sewage treatment system because of an expected surge of development in the growing county.

But environmentalists fear this will pave the way for thousands of new homes and businesses with parking lots and roads that will create more runoff into the Little and Big Darby Creek watersheds and threaten the wildlife there, especially mussels sensitive to environmental changes.

That's because once new sewer lines are extended, it opens up vast areas for development, said Anthony Sasson, a member of the Darby Creek Association, which sent a letter Jan. 18 to the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency about its concerns about not only Madison County's proposed expansion, but a $43-million request for loans from Logan County, northwest of Madison, to expand sewage system service there.

The group asked state officials to postpone any funding of the proposed large-scale sewage system expansions until "credible and comprehensive" stormwater planning, similar to what the state required in Franklin County, has been completed for Madison and Logan counties."

$200M mixed-use development with 800 housing units planned in Galloway

“Dublin-based T&R Properties Inc. and its affiliate, Braumiller Development LLC, are getting ready to start the first phase of what will become a more than $200 million project on the east and west sides of Galloway Road. When complete, the development will feature a mix of single-family and patio homes, townhomes and multifamily rentals, as well as commercial space.

T&R will begin with 93 single-family homes and 72 townhomes on the west side of Galloway Road. Those lots will be sold to D.R. Horton and Fisher Homes, which will build the homes for prospective residents. The development will sit on more than 40 acres of what is currently vacant land.

The single-family neighborhood will be known as Chase Landings, according to T&R Properties Property Manager R.J. Sabatino. He said construction of that portion of the project will begin "imminently."

The other phase of the project, tentatively named Galloway East, will be a 134-acre development featuring 635 housing units. It will include 289 single-family homes, 240 apartment units and 106 patio homes, which are attached to one another but are owned by each resident. The east side development will also include a 15-acre commercial area with frontage on Galloway Road.”

Now how did I miss this?  This is huge and I have been wondering when they are going to fill in out to the actual  little hamlet of Galloway.  Now I know.

Also they are building stuff south of 40 just past the recreation center(where everything just ends)and I am not sure what it is? I know they have had different plans for that area between the Park and that subdivision Summerlyn. There is at least one multi-level building up already. I can't tell if they are starting on the home section of the area across Broad as they are doing work on the road but it looks like they may be starting on the housing section of that.

It's called Darby Crossing. You're probably seeing the affordable apartments.

This is onethe South side of 40, right? Just down from and across from where they build the last apartments? How many will there be?

4 hours ago, aderwent said:

Ah thanks. I knew they had something in the works but I did not realize this was it. 260 units of affordable housing is great for that area. i hope they extend the COTA line out a bit now. And finish the sidewalks, and get the bike lanes extended, and some landscaping in the median like Prairie Township did on it's stretch of 40.

So...

800 units on that Galloway development that I did not even know about until today,, 260 here, about 150 homes on the area north of this, and that new development planned for Galloway next to Columbia Heights Church. We are looking at 1500 plus units so far...not since before the recession has the far west side seen this kind of growth-and I am all for it.

ok a total of 1,897 housing units for along and south of 40 on the far west side with these. Yes to it all. and bring on more.

*I just spent half an hour trying to convince some West Jeff residents about the need for housing and even *gasp* apartments and what a waste these people hate Cbus and regard it as a Christian regards the Devil. And that is whom the want to keep out-Columbusites.

.

So this 800 unit Galloway project will fill in between existing development and Galloway Road and the railroad tracks and that part will be Galloway East, and then they will also apparently be filling in the field south of the Galloway sports complex and that will be Chase Landings.

With the affordable housing area, and the area being built with over 500 units south of and around Columbia Heights church, there are few areas left.

-The field south of the tracks between the golf course and what will be Galloway East

-the small area just north of the sports complex.

-the square area of about 160-200 acres just south of O'harra Estates(El Nora and Tamara drives) and Alton Hall Elementary school.

Then that's about if for the far west side south of Broad except for small infill parcels. It will be built out as far as anything with any remote sense of density can be given the Hellbranch Run barrier.  The Far West/Southwest Side will be all full.

*I do hope they fill in the area south of Tamara Drive-they could solve the drainage/flooding issues there with the adjacent development's drainage and retention system.

I am so glad to see the plans finally being put forward. It will benefit nearby businesses and Jesus knows we need more housing.

*Has anyone heard of whether or not they ever plan to extend Alton Darby Creek Road south of Broad/40? There is a light there already and a road would effectively divide development from the park space to the west. I always though that extending that south and then having it meet with streets from the west and the east in a traffic roundabout would be a good way of handling traffic in that area once it is developed

It looks like they have modified 40 along this stretch and have added at least one street access point. They must be getting ready to start on the homes part of this. They also extended sewer, etc. lines down this stretch.  Hopefully they start building homes soon.

*the access point is just where it is on the map.

There are definitely two access points for the rest of this development unlike what is shown on the map. I wonder if there has been a change in plans? I kind a wish they would put in more apartments-more housing units can go in than SFH construction. Across the street the affordable housing continues to rise. I wonder what the residents of the Summerlyn subdivision think about it?

Girl Scouts of Ohio's Heartland has launched a $16 million fundraising campaign to build a hands-on educational center, makerspace and commercial kitchen for scouts to learn technical, leadership and entrepreneurial skills.

The Ohio's Heartland council, encompassing troops in 30 Central and Southeast Ohio counties, has raised $9.5 million so far in the campaign's four-year quiet phase, with a lead $3 million donation from Columbus research giant Battelle. Other top sponsors are the foundations of American Electric Power, Nationwide, and the Kokosing group of companies.
