Posted August 5, 201113 yr This was the third ship named after the city of Cleveland. Slide show here: http://www.signonsandiego.com/photos/galleries/2011/aug/04/uss-clevelands-bittersweet-homecoming/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Cleveland_%28LPD-7%29
August 5, 201113 yr One would have to have a heart of stone to not be moved by images taken from the moments when sailors return to their home port to see loved-ones for the first time in months. Interesting that the Cleveland is the type of ship that it is. In the '80s a whole class of attack subs were given the names of large American cities. Presumably, since the name USS Cleveland was already in use, it was not one of those named. It will be interesting to see if the name will be recycled.
August 5, 201113 yr The USS Cincinnati was an SSN (attack sub, designed to fight subs and sink ships) . The USS Ohio is an SSGN (carries cruise missiles) but used to be an SSBN (carries ICBMs).
August 5, 201113 yr The USS Michigan was converted to a Guided Missile sub, as well. The Michigan being an Ohio class, of course. I wonder if only the newest Ohios are still SSBNs?
