Sounds like something that could be done fairly cheap by a city that owned and operated its very own public utility company versus paying a private utility company. Good luck finding one of those

Edit with some of my thoughts: It doesn't feel as big all laid out as it did in my imagination, a good portion of the area is either private or public parking. Hopefully some of those parking lots go away, my preference is that they get absorbed into the park, particularly the public ones. The one across from the Flat Iron is particularly egregious. That service road for the Sherwin Williams R&D center would be nice to see closed. I'd like to see some way to continue down the boardwalk across Center St. other than walking through a parking lot (preferably still near the river). February 17, 20232 yr My thoughts would be that it'd be great if those private parking lots got turned into retail/residential buildings so people could live by the park when it's fully done. Also wish they had a better timeline available. I know they're working on across the river right now but would love to know when the ECD was for the other parts of the park in the picture. From what I remember they still have a road and a parking lot they have to get rid of and turn into park.

Hopefully it meshes well with Settler’s Landing and they feel like one unified park. I’m glad there’s a play space. There are still not a ton of outdoor child-oriented activities downtown. I love seeing the space for a water taxi. I think that could be such a cool feature of our city; just hopping on a boat and going down the river to the Flats or Wendy Park or Edgewater. Does anyone with better train knowledge than me know how the CVSR to the B&O Terminal would work? Like how much space would it need and how disruptive to this plan would it be (if at all)?

The line west/north of the B&O station was abandoned and removed in early 1980s. After 40 years, the B&O's two bascule bridges are thoroughly rusted in place. I was curious what this would look for with the extra parking lots removed, so I did a quick mock up... It does look much bigger to me. Some ideas for the extra under bridge space, more playgrounds, sculpture gardens, shade gardens, picnic tables, workout equipment, public art, fountain, plenty of options. I left the main parking lot, because realistically some people will still drive here. (Though it'd be nice to remove as well) Alternatively the metroparks could acquire the currently private lot, and green up the current primary parking lot. I'd still love to see the park (and boardwalks) extend along the south bank, but I stuck to the project area here.

They built those docks lower on the one side on purpose so people could use them for kayaks and stuff so yeah it does look higher since we're so use to seeing a lot of the side walls above the water.

March 27, 20232 yr A few shots and observations taken from my walk home to Lincoln Heights from the Agora. Having lived in Boston for ten years, I can say that Canal Basin will be like our own little North Point Park, which is among my favorites anywhere. My inner skateboarder was also very happy to see a waxed ledge (parks should be spaces for creativity!). My hunch and hope is that more people will find reasons to linger in the Flats once they get a taste of this park - CBP is just a beautiful space. Living just up the hill on Scranton Road, I can also say that (1) the Flats have become a respite because of these amenities, and (2) the walk to downtown is notably more convenient, pleasant, and cohesive because of the trail network. I find myself entering / exiting tower city's back entrance more often, which gets me excited about Bedrock's plans. All said, Cleveland is hitting the mark with the Flats >> the walk from Lincoln Heights to downtown is now one of my favorite things to do. Once we get the Detroit Superior Bridge activated underneath, a full buildout of CBP, and Irishtown Bend, the Flats' ascension as a premier neighborhood will be meteoric. I also hope that the redevelopment of the Ferry Cap & Screw Company on Scranton helps to reactivate the warehouse buildings just across the street, which could make for a dynamic commercial space. The entire bridge is being blasted and repainted right now which is quite a bit of work. I can get into the details of everything that’s happened at some point, but the really really short version is that movable bridges are very finicky to work on, especially ones that are 120 years old.

Sounds right, here's the aerial from 2023 to compare: They haven't closed off West St yet which is why the central lawn oval is partially complete from part 1. Part 4 which is next would be the completion of the oval and the "forum pavilion" I reckon.
July 3, 2024Jul 3 The main website for Canal Basin Park has been updated (link below). They are seeking input on how to finish the park. See survey. They have three proposals, but it looks like they are starting blocks from which to mix and match. Not sure if this is taking steps backward, or just fleshing out before the next phases are started. Hopefully the latter. You can download a higher res version of these at the link below as well. I'd be happy with any of them, though I think some combination of the three is probably best, and probably what we'd get. https://www.canalwaypartners.com/advocacy/canal-basin-park Edit: look for the final design to be unveiled later this year.
July 15, 2024Jul 15 my vote is version #1 — it seems more formal. the water feature in the middle in #2 is interesting, but i’d rather more useable park. it’s funny how they just can’t shake the parking lot in all 3 versions. instead i’d make their lot part of the park and let parking be the full little triangle on the lower right at carter/columbus. or maybe its better where they have it under the rta bridge, i dk, i just found it funny how welded it was in that same spot in all versions.
