January 12, 201411 yr And then there's that whole crazy situation with the former Millikin School. What's the latest with that? The last I heard, after all the accolades about how win win the solution was for the Mosdos school to rent and renovate the building, I heard there was a big hassle and construction never began, etc. Haven't seen anything new in maybe four months.

The last I heard, after all the accolades about how win win the solution was for the Mosdos school to rent and renovate the building, I heard there was a big hassle and construction never began, etc. Haven't seen anything new in maybe four months. Looks like Mosdos won't be moving in. From other articles I've read, it appears that they received a higher than expected estimate to renovate the school, so they tried to get CH-UH to renegotiate the original lease agreement. I guess that went nowhere and the district made other plans (as discussed in the following article). Instead, the Heights Youth Theatre, formerly located at Wiley, will be moving in: http://www.localjewishnews.com/2014/01/12/millikin-building-may-house-heights-youth-theatre-community-playground-may-also-be-built-on-millikin-property/
January 17, 201411 yr I see this just made it into the Orthodox community's e-newsletter but not in other media yet, as far as I've seen. Perhaps Cleveland Jewish News today? However, I haven't seen it in the CJN's "Boker Tov" daily news items so probably not. Anyway, this is important enough it should be announced in the Hts. papers right away.
March 26, 201411 yr I'm cautiously optimistic about BW3s in that area, but that signage--particularly the colors--just seems really out of place.
March 26, 201411 yr I think it is a great fit for the space. I always get confused...... is Buffalo Wild Wings and what we used to call BW3's (i.e. the place that used to be above the old movie theatre at Euclid Hts/Coventry) the same restaraunt/bar?

I always get confused...... is Buffalo Wild Wings and what we used to call BW3's (i.e. the place that used to be above the old movie theatre at Euclid Hts/Coventry) the same restaraunt/bar? Yes. The BW3's nickname came from the original restaurant's name -- Buffalo Wild Wings & Weck.
March 31, 201411 yr I think it is a great fit for the space. I always get confused...... is Buffalo Wild Wings and what we used to call BW3's (i.e. the place that used to be above the old movie theatre at Euclid Hts/Coventry) the same restaraunt/bar? BW3 = Buffalo Wild Wings. However, I'm not sure they ever had a location on Coventry. There used to be another wing place in the spot you're describing, but I can't remember what it was called.
March 31, 201411 yr It was a BW3. The space mightve been filled by abother wing joint at one time or another in its history, but no doubt was a BW3 in the 90's
March 31, 201411 yr The "3" is from the original name -- Buffalo Wild Wings & Weck -- kummelweck is a kind of roll/bun for sandwiches with salt and caraway seeds. I suspect that they got tired of having to explain weck to people and dropped it. Nice to see this project moving along.
April 2, 201411 yr New bleachers, turf field, and track for the stadium at the high school http://www.cleveland.com/cleveland-heights/index.ssf/2014/04/heights_high_football_stadium.html#incart_river_default The new bleachers are sorely needed. I was talking at a game with a few people last year about how much 'give' there was in the wood as you walked along those bleachers to your seat. The metal frame was OK, but the wood platforms you actually walked on had to be cause for concern, especially given the size of the crowds lately which have filled the bleachers to the point where people arriving late were made to stand along the fence. The Glenville game was particularly packed, with people standing almost all the way around the track, as was the playoff game against St. Edward a few years ago. I'm not sure how I feel about the turf. I assume it will be similar to what they used at Denison, which I like. But I'm just a natural grass kinda guy for football. Before they do this, I'm gonna have to go and pick out a few momentos..... to remember the glory days when I'm old and fat.
April 12, 201411 yr Just spoke with the property manager at Severance. He is confirming that Burlington will be opening in the old Walmart space in September and Big Lots will be taking over the old Boarders space around the same time. On the other side with Daves, Villa will be opening where Blockbuster was (squashing the rumors that Skechers was opening there) and Citi Trends will be taking the empty spaces between Payless and the corner. And then on the side with Aarons and Key, there are negotiations for another gym to take over the old Ballys/Red Fitness space. There have been rumors for a few years now about Burlington and Big Lots, so its quite nice to have a date put to it now, but we will see when September rolls around... as for Citi Trends and Villa, those have also been heard before (yuck!) But its much better than empty space.
April 23, 201411 yr Been looking forward to this for ages!! Buffalo Wild Wings opens at former MYXX location in Cleveland Heights By Chanda Neely, Northeast Ohio Media Group Email the author | Follow on Twitter on April 22, 2014 at 12:38 PM, updated April 22, 2014 at 2:04 PM CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, Ohio –- Buffalo Wild Wings opened Monday in the Cedar-Fairmount business district, adding a new hangout for Cleveland Heights residents and a boost to the city's economy. "With almost 100 employees, that's good for Cleveland Heights," Mayor Dennis Wilcox said. "They've put a lot of money into fixing up the facility and they're a good franchise." How much money the company spent is unclear. But the sports bar and casual dining restaurant boasts 55 flat-screen televisions, a rear patio for outdoor dining and a private party room that seats 30 people.
May 5, 201411 yr See Turkey Ridge development plans (slideshow) CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, Ohio –- Get your first look at design plans for the controversial $8 million Turkey Ridge housing development project here. The city will unveil the plans to the public during a community meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the College Club of Cleveland, 2348 Overlook Road. The project includes 10 housing units -- built in five duplexes -- on part of a 1.7-acre wooded lot on Edgehill Road, north of Cedar-Fairmount, in an area known as Turkey Ridge. http://www.cleveland.com/cleveland-heights/index.ssf/2014/04/see_turkey_ridge_development_p.html
May 5, 201411 yr Kind of underwhelming designs from the outside, IMHO, especially given the price point.
May 5, 201411 yr ^At first glance, I like them better than the townhomes on Edgehill just over the border (or at least I think they are on the Cleveland side of the border).
May 5, 201411 yr In other news, I drove by Heights High the other day and it seems like work is beginning on the football stadium renovations. If I remember correctly, they will be finished in time for the first home game of the year.
May 12, 201411 yr World Gym to open at Severance Town Center; potential tenants looking at former Walmart The national gym franchise applied for signage permits at the former Red 24/7 Fitness location, according to Cleveland Heights Planning Director Richard Wong, who didn't know when Red closed. Red moved to Severance in February 2013, when it took over the former Bally Fitness' lease. Markowitz said there are some prospective tenants looking at the former Walmart space, but declined to comment further. http://www.cleveland.com/cleveland-heights/index.ssf/2014/05/world_gym_to_open_at_severance.html#incart_river_default
May 13, 201411 yr Kind of underwhelming designs from the outside, IMHO, especially given the price point. Are you really that surprised from the same firm that has brought us gems like, Tremont Pointe and The Avenue?
May 13, 201411 yr Since this thread is alive and kicking, I wanted to point out that although BW3 has moved into the new Myxx space, it appears that there is still a sliver of a vacancy just to the west in that building. Any ideas on what might go there or what might be a good fit?
May 13, 201411 yr ^I'm not sure but I think Keller Williams might be going into that space. I saw a sign driving by but it was dark and I am basically blind (which is nice for all my fellow drivers).
May 14, 201411 yr That is a bummer that Keller Williams is going there. I would have liked to see some retail/restaurant go there.
May 14, 201411 yr Oh you know what, now that I think about it, I do recall seeing the "KW" sign, but I think I thought they were just trying to lease the space.
May 15, 201411 yr ^ I disagree - adding daytime workers is always good in my opinion. I agree that workers and nonvacancy is always good, but a restaurant or shop would also add workers, and it would attract people. Keller Williams will attract some people, but it isn't any sort of destination. So while it is good, it could be better.
May 15, 201411 yr Should be interesting to see the effect KW has on Howard Hanna. They poached some of their more well known agents. I heard one of the conditions for the agents to switch over to KW was that KW had to open a CH office - so kudos to them for that!
May 15, 201411 yr ^^One of those agents was actually my agent in just recently buying a condo. This person is the one to open the new KW office with their spouse. They are really great people who care a lot about urban development and restoration, so this is really great for them!
June 3, 201411 yr Funny having a Keller-Williams office so close to a Howard Hanna which, incidentally, didn't have any house images in their show windows the other day. Did they stop showing houses in their street windows? I remember when they stopped including the asking prices.
June 16, 201410 yr I am the president of the Cedar Taylor Development Association and we are presenting the results of this study to area merchants and residents next Monday at 8:30 am at Melt in Cleveland Heights if anyone is interested.
June 18, 201410 yr Gotcha. I live in the Tudor apartments just north of there (tons of empty storefronts as you probably know). I cant wait to see them filled. Three businesses have opened since I moved here, but at the same time, one has closed and another moved out to Tremont. I have seen a few people coming around showing interest in them, which will hopefully come to sometime! I will hopefully still be at the meeting though!

I have seen a few people coming around showing interest in them, which will hopefully come to sometime! I will hopefully still be at the meeting though! Hope to see you there. At this point, our district does not extend up there. As you can imagine, it is a lot of work to start a non profit and undertake a streetscape study for our neighborhood. We didn't want to extend ourselves too think by having too much geography to cover. Better to start small and expand if and when able.
July 11, 201410 yr Southwest corner of Cedar and S. Taylor looking better. Sure wish something wonderful would be done with northwest corner of Lee and Cedar. That was a beautiful, dignified, stylish building at one time, with beautiful windows, etc. A shame! Southwest corner would look a lot better with old-style windows and cleaned terra-cotta.
July 11, 201410 yr What's the latest with the Turkey Ridge project? A "citizen" at a recent City Council meeting implied the developer would not be getting the greatly desired tax abatement he was seeking and possibly "depending on."
August 10, 201410 yr Since no one has responded in all this time, I have found out the State didn't approve the Planning Department's rationale for a tax abatement incentment and the City was given six months to try to change the State's opinion.
August 26, 201410 yr District unveils proposed design for new CHHS exterior On Aug. 19, architects hired by the Cleveland-Heights University Heights City School District unveiled their proposed new design for the exterior of Cleveland Heights High School. The design calls for the removal of the 1959 science wing addition, to reveal the historic façade on the school’s Cedar Road side, which has been hidden from view for decades, and the construction of two new wings on the east and west sides of the building’s historic core. As proposed by the architectural firm Balog, Steines, Hendricks & Manchester, the new additions are designed to complement, and will not block, the original façade, which will be restored. http://heightsobserver.org/read/2014/08/26/district-unveils-proposed-design-for-new-chhs-exterior
August 26, 201410 yr I was under the impression that design had been approved several months or a year ago. Maybe just the final details got ironed out?
August 27, 201410 yr I was under the impression that design had been approved several months or a year ago. Maybe just the final details got ironed out? Same here, but my guess is that those renderings were just some basic sketches thrown together to show voters what could be possible if the bond issue passed. Side-note, the football stadium is close to being finished and it's looking great.
September 27, 201410 yr Historic Alcazar hotel in Cleveland Heights sold to apartment investor Kirt Montlack (gallery) By Michelle Jarboe McFee, The Plain Dealer on September 27, 2014 at 5:00 AM CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, Ohio -- After 61 years under the same ownership, one of Northeast Ohio's most unusual properties changed hands last week. A company tied to East Side apartment owner Kirt Montlack paid $1.3 million Monday for the Alcazar hotel in Cleveland Heights, property records show. Montlack didn't respond to calls seeking comment about his plans for the building, which has housed a mix of long-term residents and travelers since 1923. Spanish in style, with a touch of Florida flamboyance, the Alcazar is a striking, pentagonal presence at the juncture of Surrey and Derbyshire roads. Cole Porter, George Gershwin and Bob Hope stayed there. According to lore, Porter wrote his popular song "Night and Day" at the hotel. At least, that's how the story goes. October 14, 201410 yr While not cleveland proper, I have just started a gofundme for streetscape improvements in the Cedar/Taylor neighborhood of Cleveland Heights and University Heights. I am board president of the Cedar Taylor Development Association and we have CDBG funds coming from the city, but we need to raise some matching funds as well. Please consider a donation. http://www.gofundme.com/cedartaylor
November 16, 201410 yr What would it take for old-style balconies to reappear at the Alcazar. They had added a lot to the charm and the romantic element of the structure. I recall when the Gaede and Serne firm worked on renovating it and the decision to remove ALL of them, and not replace any, came up, and it's obvious what was decided. The Landmark Commission was unable to have influence in this matter. Ah, what money can do for the finer things in life.... :-(
