It's great, I was there in July....the view is spectacular and the staff is giddy to be showing it off.  I <3 Cleveland!

Love it when we get to "look down" on your beloved city like you did! Thank you for your sky-high peek at DT Cleveland!

Sunday afternoon on the deck...

Rob, thanks for the 1985 comparison! I can almost hear Wham!, U2, Tears for Fears, Debarge, Duran Duran, Til' Tuesday and Depeche Mode playing on the radio right now!

It's a good thing those Warehouse District developers decided to sow the seeds of love for those buildings!

The comparison between the two photos above is definitely intersting, but what city or county official do we burn in effigy by agreeing to allow a cement silo to be built on one of the most crucial pieces of property on our lakefront. That should be the ceremonial  front door to our city, welcoming visitors with a beautiful park or a water fountain proclaiming "Welcome to Cleveland". Does anyone know about when that was constructed? An article recently said that the silos were the reason Eaton decided against building their HQ in that area because it would have cost 15 million to relocate the silos.

I'm glad it brought back memories. Previously I posted a set of photos from TT taken that day, and didn't want to resurrect the whole thread here. However, that photo links to the 1978-2003 set on my web site. Click it to revisit thoses photos.

I think the silo was built shortly after the Waterfront Line started running in 1996. I remember seeing it under construction from one of the trains, but now I'm not sure. That area was considered for the World Trade Center as well as for a new aquarium (which is why the elevated Waterfront Line widens for to accommodate station platforms, and has underpasses below it).

This graphic is of the proposed World Trade Center from the mid-1990s....

Well, remember that the waterfront was historically an industrial location, prime for barges and other vessels to come to the edge and unload or load bulk materials. I don't see a problem with locating both industry and other facilities - parks, commercial structures, residences, etc., but there obviously needs to be a balance. There is much land in Cleveland on the waterfront that is underused - and industry does bring in more tax revenue than say, park land or residences.

The silos don't even take up that much room as it is.  It's not like that road loop they have going on there is required to access and operate the silos.

Thanks KJP, very interesting.

I understand that this is a working port, but I would have loved to have been in that room when someone signed off on that space for a 50 year lease.  It is an important piece of property and with Wendy Park and the light house there I think we should strive for something better. And why am I thinking this was a Jimmy Dimora decision with all of his concrete buddies, just so he could get a new patio at the old Dimora compound. lol.

OK,  back to the photo thread. Great photos btw.

yikes!

OH NO, the world is getting dimmer and more overcast! :-)

You guys can be depressed at the comparison but it was the big red crane that caught my eye first. Then I noticed a shiny new building (Whose name I've forgotten and am too lazy to look up). Then I saw a couple of older buildings that looked painted and spiffed up. I don't think it's a terrible comparison. Obviously it's not ideal, but stop being so gloomy about it. The weather in the 2011 picture is gloomy enough. Sheesh.

the port looked busier and thats what caught my eye first. man they really need to give up at least some of the prime waterfront property. a silo? slag heaps on the best corner? it just looks like much of the port property is sitting there doing nothing and going to waste. ah well, in time.

Part of the 2011 photo cuts off...so we're not seeing the whole scene as we are in '85.
