Lake Erie incredibly warm for this time of year, shattering record

Updated: Nov. 20, 2024, 11:03 a.m.

Lake Erie isn’t just a touch warmer than normal. It is much warmer than normal with the surface water temperatures at record warm levels by a significant margin.

Lake Erie’s average surface water temperature on Sunday, Nov. 17, was 57.1 degrees. It is incredible that a Great Lake has almost a 60-degree water temperature in mid-November.

I hope the warmer water is not due to the cruise ships tourists taking over our Gteat Lake - coincidence I hope. Seriously though, we hope they are flushing their ballasr water before entering the seaway to the great lakes as stated by Nat Geo....

Insignificant volume.  Erie is warmer than the others because it is shallower and further south.  The southernmost point of the lakes is somewhere near Huron.

This would explain why Lake Erie is warmer relative to the other Great Lakes, not why Lake Erie is warmer than its historical average temperature...

was in jest - but not the part about ballast water has been our concern for decades (see zebra muscles and other foreign species that stow away in the ballast) expecially in this the shallowest of all Great Lakes. The upside as the shallowest is Laker Erie can completely refresh itself in less time than the others

New York State was ready to make a big deal out of ballast water, there was some suspicion it was to make Great Lakes ports less competitive vis a vis NYC.

Found while cyber-slacking this afternoon.  Interesting if you have some time to read about local shipwrecks.  Apologies if this has already been posted here somewhere--I didn't see in a quick search.
