and add to that how many coaches also played the game, yet white nfl players do not even make up 25%.

systematic racism remains a serious issue in the nfl higher ranks, not to mention elsewhere.

I think that article is rather intellectually dishonest, but it sounds like the author has made a career out of it so he has to keep doubling down. I think we need to reject the notion that different outcomes are de facto evidence of discrimination. Is the racial makeup of, say, NFL cornerbacks evidence of systematic racism? What about tight ends? Or are there other explanations?

Anyways, as I said before - I think the bigger impact this will have is exposing teams that have seemingly paid bonuses to players and/or coaches for tanking. I saw this rumor alleging that the Browns did it in '16 and '17:

another whataboutism fail -- try to stay on topic instead of pulling a dishonest trump tactic.

as you were absent from school above apparantly, once again -- there is along history of systematic racism across the upper ranks of the nfl.

thank your privileged white power shield that you can hide your head from it.

But at the player level, about 70% are black.  Couldn't one argue that white players are underrepresented in the NFL?

for the third time, the issue is at the upper levels.

to put it another way, its what women in business would call a glass ceiling.

This Super Bowl feels like the biggest I can remember. From the most heavily bet in history to the most expensive tickets in history. This will also be the “real” global debut of the most expensive stadium ever built in SoFi. Along with a huge star studded half time show all taking place in LaLa land. I’m excited!!!  It’s also making the Winter Olympics a zero factor lol.

I am surprised but pleased that a Super Bowl featuring two lesser-storied teams is this big.

What an amazing building. Who ever is hired as the creative director for the 2028 Olympics opening/closing ceremonies is going to have a blast using this facility.

Have there been any travel articles highlighting Cincinnati prior to today's game? It's always nice to see national news covering the city and not just the team, but I don't think I've really seen anything this time around.

Rod Watson: Bills déjà vu as opportunity slips away – again

Now, our 13 seconds begin.

As every Buffalo Bills fan knows, that’s how long it takes for euphoria to morph into regret as promise and possibility slowly become a huge missed opportunity.

Granted, the elation is palpable this week after the state, county, team and National Football League all approved the deal to build a new Orchard Park stadium. Risking permanent shoulder injury, Gov. Kathy Hochul and County Executive Mark Poloncarz are reaching as far around as possible to pat themselves on the back.

^ I'd like to see St. Louis back in the NFL.

  • 4 weeks later...

^ yeah, its weird with no st louis team.

that’s really greedy and dum for the nfl to still be talking about expansion.

they should be talking about contracting a couple teams.

youth football participation has dropped by at least half since the oughties, so they would just be ruining the game due the diluted talent pool (just like the nhl did when it went on an expansion orgy, although unlike the nfl at least they had some international talent to pull from):

https://www.statista.com/statistics/191658/participants-in-tackle-football-in-the-us-since-2006/

so maybe much later on the nfl can expand, like if and after the nfl takes off in places like london and africa (they keep trying don’t they? ha!).

^I can already tell the size difference at the mid-major schools.

Anecdotal, but youth football participation is surging in NKY post-pandemic.

^ Question: How many superbowls do the Pats win without the Bill Belichick's defenses? In other words I think using that as a metric for "best qb ever" is not the best one.

https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/34553680/chicago-bears-say-singular-focus-suburban-arlington-park-site-new-stadium

Chicago Bears say 'singular focus' is on suburban Arlington Park site for new stadium

McCaskey said the Bears will "seek no public funding for direct stadium structure construction" but would need assistance in order to complete the rest of the multibillion-dollar project. The necessary infrastructure, like roads and sewers, is what the Bears will need taxpayer help with or "will not be able to move forward" with the project, according to McCaskey.

How convenient the Bears couldn't ballpark what this "necessary infrastructure" would cost and actually entails.

And as for "the new stadium would make up less than half of the development, which would include restaurants, retail and office space, housing, a hotel, fitness center, new parks, ponds and open areas," who pray tell would be funding these amenities. They don't sound like "direct stadium structure construction" to me.

Jimmy and Dee are following this nonsense closely.

I'm sort of glad  John Madden isn't here to see what's going on right now with Brett Favre.

If you didn't see it live, I recommend finding a rebroadcast of the Vikings-Bills game from today. Easily the game of the year. WR Justin Jefferson should earn offensive player of the week.

Baker Mayfield, wife Emily hit the town to celebrate improbable Rams win

By Jenna Lemoncelli

December 9, 2022

Mayfield went 22 of 35 for 230 yards and a touchdown with zero interceptions in his Rams debut — which came three days after he was released by the Panthers on Monday, following a mutual decision to part ways.

The quarterback asked to be released after learning he was not in Carolina’s quarterback plans going forward.

Just like his Browns comeback against the Jets in 2018, it's all downhill from here!

Nostalgiac for the days when the Browns didn't have a serial sex offender starting quarterback, and the owners/players/fans didn't have to invent excuses to themselves and their families. Some fathers those people are...

I do hope Baker has a successful career. Clearly Carolina did not go well, but Thursday was a good start.

And I do hope our starting line eventually finds their moral compass with every play that involves Cleveland's current Weinstein/Cosby. The sooner I hear about a preventable compound fracture, the sooner I may start supporting the team.

here it is in all its glory — the dec 1972 immaculate reception — ps the winner went on the play the winner of the browns-dolphins playoff game (which was miami 20, browns 14 waa waaaah!).

rip franco:

I still remember seeing that play when I was downtown with a buddy doing some Christmas shopping.  We were walking down Euclid Ave and stopped to watch on a TV in a storefront window (yeah, there were stores on Euclid then). That was the start of something big for the Steelers in the 70s.

As a child Franco was the enemy.   The Steelers were on their way to 4 Superbowls, and the Browns were, well the Browns.  I have many childhood photos of me in Dallas Cowboys gear because I rooted for Staubach, Dorsett and Pearson to beat up on the Steelers.

With this being said, Franco was an all time great and the immaculate reception will stand in the top of all NFL legacy plays.   RIP and condolences to the Steeler nation.
