I'm guessing they're not too upset to have the biggest market in the country in the Super Bowl instead of #27.

 

Yes but having a West Coast team represented keeps interest levels higher on the West Coast...regardless of what team is in it.  For example, if Cleveland or Indy made it...you'll most likely bump viewership in Cbus, Cincy, Detroit, Pittsburgh, etc, etc.

 

Boston is a great market to have, but NY will most likely draw in large portions of the East Coast...not all, but a good amount.  This year leaves the Midwest, South, and West all without a nearby representative.  I'm not so sure they're thrilled about that.  It should help having the Pats going for history though.

^ I think that logic is more present in MLB & NBA, because each year can have a big shift in ratings based upon teams.  However, I think that the teams in the game have less effect on the ratings of the Super Bowl.  I understand your point, but I don't think that you're gonna get someone in San Fran to watch the game simply because the Chargers are playing in it.

Plus the real money the NFL makes is off the commercials, and those rates are determined mostly by demand of the available time.

The network is the one that makes money from the commercials. I don't know the number but the NFL does get a percentage of that money.

20 Years of Superbowls Yielded 1400 Commercials and 1.72 Billion Ad Dollars

 

According to TNS Media Intelligence, advertising during the Super Bowl game has accounted for 682 minutes, over 11 full hours, of commercial time throughout the past 20 years (1987-2006). Those 11 hours represent 221 different advertisers, more than 1,400 commercial announcements and translate into $1.72 billion of network advertising sales.

 

The top five Super Bowl advertisers of the past 20 years have spent $613.4 million on advertising during the game, accounting for 35 percent of total advertising dollars spent in the game.

 

The FedEx Corporation, as the fifth top advertiser through 2005, was replaced in this year's report (covering 1987-2006) by Walt Disney. This is especially interesting as FedEx Corporation has advertised with the Super Bowl for 19 years, while Walt Disney has only advertised with the Super Bowl for the past seven years.

Each year, about 62 percent of the network TV ad money invested in the game comes from incumbent marketers who ran commercials the previous year.

 

Jon Swallen, senior vice president of Research at TNS Media Intelligence, said "While that's a very high retention rate, it's actually lower than the comparable rate for two other showcase TV events. Over the past 10 years, the average dollar retention rate has been 78 percent for the Academy Awards and 67 percent for the World Series," said.

 

The cost of an advertisement in the Super Bowl has more than quadrupled in the past 20 years, reaching $2.5 million in 2006 for a 30-second unit. For the 2007 game, CBS is reportedly fetching over $2.6 million for each 30-second spot.

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was photographed Monday with what appears to be walking cast on his right foot.

 

The Boston Herald and Boston Globe had the photos — credited to infphoto.com — on their Web sites. A video of Brady walking with a slight limp from an SUV to girlfriend Gisele Bundchen's apartment in New York is available on TMZ.com.

 

The Patriots beat San Diego 21-12 on Sunday and play the New York Giants in the Super Bowl in two weeks.

 

"Ah, you know, there's always bumps and bruises. I'll be ready for the Super Bowl," Brady said Monday during his weekly radio appearance on WEEI — before the photo and video emerged — when asked if his leg was injured. "I'm not worried about that. I'm not missing this one. I'd have to be on a stretcher to miss this one. There will be treatment this week. In games like this, you get a little nicked up. It's nothing serious."

 

Patriots spokesman Stacey James wrote in an e-mail to the AP late Monday night that the team had no comment on the photos.

 

Brady threw three interceptions against the Chargers in one of the worst performances of what has been a record-breaking season for him. Brady has started in 124 consecutive games, the third longest streak by a quarterback in NFL history.

Haha I used to be a Times man, but being in the city, the Post is really growing on me.

Every time I see him playing, all I can think about is how he dumped Bridget Moynahan for Gisele Bundchen. Sure, Gisele is super hot, but so is Bridget. I guess what I'm saying is, when you've got two women who are that hot, what's the difference between the two?

Giants-Pats was most-watched Super Bowl By DAVID BAUDER, AP Television Writer

 

The New York Giants' thrilling win over the New England Patriots was the most-watched Super Bowl ever, with 97.5 million viewers, Nielsen Media Research said Monday.

 

The game eclipsed the previous Super Bowl record of 94.08 million, set when Dallas defeated Pittsburgh in 1996. More people watched Sunday's game than all but one American television broadcast ever, the "M-A-S-H" finale in 1983, which was seen by 106 million viewers.

 

The game had almost all the ingredients Fox could have hoped for: a tight contest with an exciting finish involving a team that was attempting to make history as the NFL's first unbeaten team since 1972.

 

But the Giants ended New England's bid for perfection, 17-14. Throughout the game, the teams were never separated by more than a touchdown.

Favre reportedly to retire after 17 seasons

FOX Sports first reported Tuesday that the Green Bay Packers quarterback informed the team in the last few days. ESPN.com said that according to Favre’s agent the quarterback told coach Mike McCarthy of his decision...

Jets Acquire MVP Quarterback Brett Favre

Jets fans are cheering this morning upon hearing that three-time Most Valuable Player Brett Favre was acquired by the New York Jets late last night – reportedly in exchange for a draft pick.

 

Favre came from the Green Bay Packers, where he had played for 16 years...

Favre is past his prime.  Last year was nothing but what should have been a Cinderella ending to his career.  The Pack was barely 500 in the last three years, and considering what their record was last year, that is not good.  Again, past his prime.  He owes alot to the Pack being that after he announced his retirement the first time, they spent alot of money aquiring Aaron Rodgers.  It's about time this guy gets a chance.

Who cares, go back to retirement favre.

Green Bay got a 4th round draft pick.  3rd if he plays 70% of the snaps, 2nd if the jets make the playoffs and a 1st if they make the superbowl.

It's freaking 21-6 as I write, a tough row for McNabb to hoe. Pittsburgh should be your champions, I like Ben (I'm @ Miami writing this) but really Steeler fan is about as annoying as Bosox fan. Bandwagon.

Philly puts up 19 unanswered points.  Gentleman, we have a game.

The Cards just marched down the field and scored a TD with a two-point conversion to go up by 7 points.  With the way things have been going I think McNabb is going to march right back down the field and score again to send the game into overtime...that is if Akers can make the extra point.  Maybe they'll just go for two and the win.

The Cardinals did it...Kurt Warner has probably secured his spot in the Hall of Fame now.
