December 10, 20204 yr The 0-11 Jets looked like they would win their first game last Sunday against the Raiders. The Raiders were 46 yards from a needed TD, zero timeouts and only 13 seconds left. And then this happened: This was the reason that happened. Jets DC Gregg Williams called an all-out blitz(!) Followed a day later by DC Gregg Williams being fired(!) But the 0-12 Jets still have this guy as their head coach - at least for another four games:
December 10, 20204 yr And on Monday, the Washington Football Team beat the Pittsburgh Football Team. Meaning the final undefeated NFL team lost. Meaning Larry Csonka of the undefeated 1972 Miami Dolphins toasted the game:
December 21, 20204 yr Inexplicably, the Jets somehow beat the 9-4 L.A. Rams by a FG to win their first game of the season. And because of that win, they now have fallen to the #2 pick in the 2021 draft - behind Jacksonville, who got clobbered 40-14 at Baltimore. Below is the current draft order from http://www.tankathon.com/nfl So now the Jets might end up with a historically awful season and lose out QB Trevor Lawrence to Jacksonville(!)
December 28, 20204 yr https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/30613088/washington-football-team-releases-qb-dwayne-haskins-sources-say Wow. It's been a meteoric rise and fall for Dwayne Haskins. After one tremendous year at Ohio State, Haskins was drafted 15th overall by Washington in 2019. But after a shaky rookie season and a worse second season both on and off the field - Haskins was released by Washington before its final 2020 game in which they could win the NFC East with a victory.

Also...headaches don't stop just because you're coaching in the NFL and not the Big Ten. That's not how that works. Urban's main advantage in college was motivation and recruiting. I don't think he will transition well to the NFL. Probably a Saban-esque flameout. Talent level is fairly equal around the league. There aren't a bunch of a Bowling Greens and Florida A&Ms to beat up on your schedule. And I never really got wowed by Urban as an X&Os guy. They'll probably draft Lawrence (some people think they could take Fields since he's the prototypical Meyer QB) and run him on a QB draw 23 times a game for 2.3 yards per carry. Very Stable Genius

I see Urban following the Pete Carroll model versus Kelly or Saban. Saban made a terrible personnel move to start when he let Bree's go to the Saints. That doomed him from the beginning. I think Justin Fields would be the better option in that scenario, or the kid from NDSU.

Instead, for trading their former #2 overall pick from the 2016 draft, the Eagles got a 2021 third-round draft pick and a conditional 2022 second-round pick that could turn into a first-rounder if Wentz plays at least 75% of the Colts' offensive snaps next season. For the Colts, they get a replacement for Rivers, who retired - with the hope that a Wentz reunion with Colts head coach Frank Reich, his former offensive coordinator in Philadelphia, will rejuvenate him to something approaching his 2017 season, when he went 11-2 and helped lead the Eagles to the Super Bowl.
February 19, 20214 yr I think Wentz would have a hard time matching Rivers next season, but we shall see.

April 30, 20214 yr Congrats to Cleveland for hosting the 2021 NFL Draft. The first day first round broadcast is over and recapped below: https://twitter.com/i/events/1364969814763008000 As expected, QB's went 1-2-3, first time since 1999 that three QB's were taken to start an NFL Draft: 1. Trevor Lawrence to JAX 2. Zach Wilson to NYJ 3. Trey Lance to SF The highest rated player who wasn't a QB - TE Kyle Pitts - went #4 to ATL. The Bengals chose LSU WR Ja'Marr Chase at #5 to reunite with QB Joe Burrow. Then the wheeling and dealing began. At #6, the Dolphins traded up from #10 with the Eagles to select one of two Alabama WR's chosen in the first round. The Eagles chose the other Bama WR at #10 and got MIA's 2022 1st-round pick too (so they're feeling good!) At #11, the Bears traded up from #20 with the Giants to select OSU QB Justin Fields(!) The Bears gave up their 2022 1st-round pick plus a 2021 5th and 2022 4th to make the move. Meanwhile, the Pats just stood still and let Alabama QB Mac Jones fall to #15 - getting the QB they wanted anyway without giving up anything - because of course. In addition to the speculation and dealing, the reaction shots are always great: The Jets traded up from #23 to #14 with MIN to select an OG their fans hadn't heard of before - but they made the best of it: After collecting their haul of extra picks to drop to #20, the Giants chose a Florida WR their fans hadn't heard of before - but they didn't make the best of it: The Raiders usually make some wild overreach pick - and at #17, Bama OT Alex Leatherwood was thought to be a second-rounder. But he did win the 2020 Outland Trophy for best OL and was on that dominating National Championship team. So it seems like a good pick to me. Plus, if he inherits the energy of his family, he'll work out(!) The Cleveland crowd reaction to the Steelers pick at #24 was predictably great: The Browns pick at #26 made some history - and it wasn't because a Browns fan wearing a pumpkinhead was sitting in the Goodell easy chair on the draft stage: The Browns pick of a Northwestern CB at #26 was the 2nd NW player selected in the first-round - the first time NW had two players selected in a 1st-round. Before 2021, NW had two 1st-round selections in the previous 37 years(!) But National Champs Alabama still ruled the first round with a record-tying six players selected. That tied 2004, when Miami had six first-round players.

Now, to be fair, in the NFL, many veteran players that have helped teams win championships and been loyal to that team have been "treated badly" by the team management. Without the protection of no-cut contracts, most NFL players can be cut at any time for any reason (particularly due to injury). And even the reigning NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers found out that the NFL is not like the NBA, where players can force a trade from a team they are unhappy with. For all of Rodgers' off-season statements to try to get out of Green Bay, the only reported concession he got from Green Bay was the waiving of the final 2023 season of his current contract. So with the 2023 season waived from his contract, 2022 is now the final season that Green Bay has with Rodgers. Rodgers will play for Green Bay in 2021, with the promise that Green Bay will "re-examine" their situation over the next off-season(!) Bad for Rodgers - but good for ESPN because it will create never-ending off-season NFL content for their year-long 100-hour per week NFL programs 🏈🏈🏈
August 1, 20213 yr I hope enough teams move that it backfires and cities stop bending over backwards for them. They have no loyalty to you. I guess owners can't threaten to move to Vegas and LA any more. I feel bad for Bills fans. Edited August 1, 20213 yr by Mendo

At least I won't wake up some day to find that the Buckeyes will be moving/or threatening to move to Boise or Raleigh or wherever. My sympathies to Buffalo-a fine city.
August 2, 20213 yr Come on, Buffalo and Green Bay are the last of the old small city teams. I'll make a rule -- if the Bills move the NFL has to bring Portsmouth back no matter how much money it loses a year. In the old stadium.
August 2, 20213 yr ^Greater Buffalo's pretty substantially larger than Green Bay. But since they draw off Milwaukee, the Bills' market might be smaller.
August 2, 20213 yr The Packers are an anomaly when it comes to sports franchises. They are owned by the community of shareholders and i guess technically, a 'non profit'. They wont be moving out of Green Bay, despite it being a small city.
August 3, 20213 yr aww nah no, no, no https://dfw.cbslocal.com/2021/08/01/texas-gov-abbott-acknowledges-buffalo-bills-austin-relocation/
August 3, 20213 yr I am tied to Buffalo by marriage and say there is no way the Bills leave Buffalo. Owner Terry Pegula is heavily invested in Buffalo already and is only leveraging the move threat to get public funding for the only NFL franchise that actually plays in the state of New York. Personally I hope they leave Orchard Park and move into the city of Buffalo. There is lots of open land around the Central Terminal there, which would make for an amazing NFL experience complex included around the stadium.
